If your Thermacell LIV 2.0 seems ineffective, first check its indicator lights and refill: a red light can point to a missing, low, or empty cartridge, while a chasing amber light means the unit is still warming up. Thermacell says the repellers may need about five minutes to warm and a few more minutes for protection to establish. Then check cartridge compatibility, refill-life settings, placement, and connections—in that order.
Read the repeller lights before changing settings
Check the light on each repeller and the hub’s power indicator. Thermacell’s LIV support guidance describes these repeller signals:
- Chasing amber: The repeller is warming up; the protection zone is not ready yet.
- Solid blue: The repeller is at temperature and the protection zone is ready.
- Flashing red: A refill is missing.
- Periodic flashing red: The cartridge is getting low.
- Solid red: The cartridge is empty. Replace the refill and reset its life in the system.
- Flashing blue/yellow on LIV 2.0: The repeller is tilted or has been knocked over. Set it upright.
- Flashing orange alongside the operating-color light on LIV 2.0: The cap is obstructed. Clear the obstruction and move the cap to the closed position; Thermacell says the cap is designed to reopen after about a minute.
- Flashing red/white: Thermacell identifies a temperature issue and directs owners to support.
- Solid green: Thermacell identifies a communication error and directs owners to support.
These light meanings come from Thermacell’s LIV Product Support guidance. If the light signals an error that the guide assigns to support, do not try to repair internal components yourself.
Check the refill and reset its remaining life
LIV is compatible only with Thermacell LIV On-Demand Repellent Refills. If a cartridge is empty, replace it with a compatible refill; then set the system’s refill life to match the duration of the refill installed. An incorrect setting can make the system’s refill status inaccurate.

Reset refill life in the LIV+ 2 app
- Select your system in the LIV+ 2 app and power it on.
- Choose Reset, select the duration that matches the installed refill, and confirm.
Reset refill life at the hub without Wi-Fi
- Power on the system.
- Hold the hub power button for five seconds, until the LED turns purple.
- Release the button after the LED flashes, then cycle to the color that corresponds to the refill cap and its duration.
- Hold the button for three seconds to lock in the selection.
Follow the current Thermacell LIV support instructions if the hub’s light behavior differs from this sequence. Do not select a refill duration by guesswork.
Allow warm-up time and check coverage around seating
Thermacell says LIV repellers can take five minutes to warm up before releasing repellent at optimal levels and advises allowing a few additional minutes for the protection zone to establish. A repeller that is still showing chasing amber has not reached the ready state.

Thermacell’s placement guidance for LIV recommends keeping repellers no more than 20 feet apart and within 10 feet of seating or gathering areas. Mount each unit upright, 2–4 inches above the ground, with at least 18 inches of clearance from plants, walls, and other obstructions. These are manufacturer recommendations, not independently established performance guarantees.

Check the hub, cables, and repellers safely
Unplug the hub before connecting or disconnecting repellers. If the hub flashes three times and then shuts off, Thermacell says to check the cables and repellers; if the error remains, contact support. The terminator supplied with the hub belongs on the last repeller in the longest chain.
For dirt or weathering on a repeller, Thermacell recommends cleaning it with a damp cloth or alcohol wipe. For a rapidly flashing hub, no LED on the hub power button, a solid-green communication error, or a flashing red/white temperature issue, use Thermacell’s support path rather than improvising a repair. A persistent cable or repeller error after checking connections also warrants contacting support.

Separate Wi-Fi and app trouble from repellency
The LIV+ 2 app requires a 2.4 GHz network. Thermacell says basic mosquito repellency and some system functions, including refill reset, remain available without Wi-Fi. So an app connection problem by itself does not show that the repellent has stopped operating.
If setup or app onboarding fails, check that the phone and hub are using the intended network and correct password, and verify signal strength. Then follow Thermacell’s official reset and onboarding instructions. If the repeller itself shows a refill or hardware status light, troubleshoot that status separately from the app connection.

When to contact Thermacell
Contact Thermacell support for the error conditions its guide assigns to support: temperature or communication faults, a rapidly flashing hub, a hub power button with no LED, or a cable/repeller error that continues after connections have been checked.
