Retro consoles often look blurry on modern TVs because they send a low-resolution analog picture that the TV must convert and enlarge to fit its panel. The cable and signal type, whether the game outputs 240p or interlaced 480i, and the TV’s own processing all affect the result. Start by checking the connection and picture settings; if those do not suit your setup, a compatible external scaler can handle more of the conversion.
Why a retro console can look blurry on a modern TV
Older consoles were designed for lower-resolution displays. A modern television has to scale that picture to its much higher-resolution panel, and its built-in conversion may not present the image the way you prefer. The result can look soft, uneven, stretched, flickery, or unstable. The exact outcome varies by console, cable, television, and signal.
The connection matters, too. Composite video—the single yellow RCA video plug—uses a different signal path from S-Video or component video. A better connection can help when the console supports it, but the right cable depends on the specific console, and the TV or scaler must accept that signal. - Identify the setup. Note the exact console model, cable type, and TV input in use. Check the console documentation to see whether it supports S-Video or component as well as composite.
- Confirm that the signal is accepted. If you use a scaler, verify that its input supports the console’s cable and signal. Do not buy a replacement cable based only on its connector color; confirm console-specific compatibility.
- Check the picture framing. Use the television’s aspect-ratio controls to make sure it is not stretching the image. Menu names vary by TV, so consult its manual.
- Review sharpness and image processing. The TV manual can explain where these controls are and what they do. There is no single setting that applies to every television, and changing sharpness is not a substitute for a compatible signal path.
Tell blur apart from 480i flicker
Not every distracting image is simply blur. Some consoles and games output 240p; others use interlaced 480i. An interlaced signal has to be deinterlaced for a progressive display, and the method can affect flicker and image stability.

For example, RetroTINK says its 2X Pro uses bob deinterlacing, which may flicker with 480i sources. Its 5X Pro describes more advanced motion-adaptive deinterlacing. When an external scaler may help
A scaler can take over some of the conversion and enlargement work before the picture reaches the TV. It may provide more control over scaling, deinterlacing, or visual effects, but the result still depends on the source, selected output mode, and TV compatibility. Scaling can improve how existing video is presented; it cannot restore detail the console never produced.

Choose the look you want
A sharper, pixel-oriented presentation, a softer filtered image, and CRT simulation are different aesthetic choices. Scalers document options such as adjustable scaling and CRT simulation, but no single look is universally best. If your current image is stable and the main issue is softness, decide whether you prefer sharper pixels or smoothing before changing hardware.

For a sharper signal path, first check whether your console supports S-Video or component and whether your TV or scaler accepts it. If you want an external scaler, compare its inputs with your actual console cable and its output modes with your television. No one option can be recommended for every console-and-TV combination.

If the picture is still poor
- Still soft: Recheck the cable and input type, then verify the TV is not stretching the image. Consider a compatible scaler if you want different scaling controls.
- Flickers or looks unstable: Check whether the source is 480i and whether deinterlacing is involved. A scaler’s deinterlacing method can affect the result.
- No picture after adding a scaler: Confirm that the console’s input signal and the scaler’s selected output mode are supported by the television. In particular, output modes such as 1440p are not accepted by every TV.
- The picture looks wrong in shape: Revisit the TV’s aspect-ratio setting and consult its manual; menu labels and behavior differ among models.
