A regular expression is interpreted by the engine that runs it, not by a universal cross-language standard. Python’s re and JavaScript’s RegExp differ in string escaping, supported syntax, character classes, flags, and matching APIs—so a pattern can fail to compile or produce different matches after a direct copy.
Why does my regex work in Python but not JavaScript?
There are two layers to check: how the host language constructs the pattern string, and how the regex engine interprets the resulting pattern. The same-looking source code can deliver different characters to the engine, and identical pattern text can still behave differently across Python and JavaScript.
The exact cause depends on the pattern, input, flags, runtime versions, and matching API. Diagnose those details rather than assuming that one syntax change will fix every cross-language mismatch.
Check string escaping before changing the regex
In Python, a quoted string is processed by Python before re receives it. A raw string such as r"w+" avoids most of that first layer of backslash interpretation. Python’s documentation recommends raw strings “for all but the simplest expressions” because the interaction between string-literal and regex escaping can be hard to understand: Python regular-expression documentation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
JavaScript has a similar distinction. A regex literal such as /w+/ is parsed as a regular expression directly. With the constructor, new RegExp("\w+"), JavaScript first parses the string, so the backslash must be escaped for the string as well as for the regex. See MDN’s RegExp constructor reference.
When debugging, inspect what the engine actually receives—not just the source-code spelling. This is especially important for patterns assembled dynamically.

Why does w match differently?
Shorthand classes are not guaranteed to represent identical character sets in both engines. In JavaScript, MDN documents w as ASCII letters, digits, and underscore, and d as the digits 0 through 9. Python str patterns use Unicode matching by default for classes such as w and d; use re.ASCII when ASCII-only behavior is intended. See MDN’s character-class reference and Python’s re documentation.
That distinction matters with non-ASCII text. If Python accepts a character as a word or digit but JavaScript does not, check the intended character set before replacing shorthand classes. Unicode-related behavior also depends on the JavaScript flags and features in use.

Why is my lookbehind invalid in Python?
Python requires the contents of a lookbehind assertion to match strings of fixed length. A lookbehind containing a variable quantifier such as a* is therefore not accepted by Python’s re engine. Check the exact pattern and Python version against the Python re documentation.
A compile-time error points to a syntax or engine constraint, not necessarily a problem with the text being searched. Compare the lookbehind’s contents with the target engine’s documented rules before trying to alter the input or flags.

Compare flag effects, not just flag letters
Flags with similar names may exist in both languages, but their spelling, availability, and effects are not interchangeable. In JavaScript, m changes how ^ and $ match around lines; s lets . match line terminators; and u enables Unicode-aware mode and property escapes. Modern MDN documentation also describes v, the Unicode sets mode. JavaScript’s flags are documented in MDN’s RegExp flags reference.
Python provides re.MULTILINE for line-oriented ^ and $ behavior and re.DOTALL to let . match line breaks. Python 3 str patterns use Unicode matching by default, while re.ASCII restricts relevant shorthand classes. Consult the Python re documentation and compare what each flag does for your pattern, rather than copying a flag letter mechanically.

Check the matching API as well as the pattern
JavaScript can create a regex with either a literal or the RegExp constructor; Python can call module-level functions or use a compiled pattern object. The API affects how the pattern is constructed and how matches are retrieved.
One JavaScript-specific trap is stateful iteration with exec() and the global (g) flag. Repeated calls can depend on the regex’s iteration state, so matching code may return different results even when the pattern itself compiles. See MDN’s RegExp.prototype.exec() reference. Compare returned matches and captures, not just whether compilation succeeds.
Quick Recap
A practical debugging sequence
- Record the exact pattern received by each engine. For JavaScript, inspect the string passed to
RegExpwhen using the constructor. For Python, identify whether the pattern came from a raw or regular string literal. - Compare the syntax element by element. Check escapes, groups, backreferences, lookarounds, and character classes against the target engine’s documentation.
- Write down the flags explicitly. Compare multiline and dot-all behavior, Unicode handling, and JavaScript global iteration rather than translating flag names by appearance.
- Build a small shared test set. Include expected matches and non-matches, empty input, line breaks, and non-ASCII characters when they are relevant to the intended inputs.
- Run the same tests in the production runtimes. Record the Python and JavaScript versions; test both compilation and the resulting match and capture behavior.
- Handle dynamic input separately. Escape literal user-provided text with the appropriate mechanism for the target language. A string made safe for one engine is not automatically safe for the other.
