Use a database connection pool instead of opening a fresh connection for every query. A pool reuses connections and limits how many clients your application can have checked out at once—reducing repeated connection setup while protecting the database from an unbounded burst of connections.
What a connection pool does
A database connection is a live client-to-server session. Establishing one involves connection setup and a handshake; the node-postgres documentation estimates that connecting a new PostgreSQL client can take 20–30 milliseconds. That is the documentation’s handshake estimate, not a guaranteed amount of latency saved on every query or in every application.
A pool keeps connections available for reuse. When code needs the database, it checks out an available client, runs work, and returns the client to the pool. The pool can open clients as needed up to its configured maximum. If all are checked out, new requests wait in a queue rather than creating unlimited connections.
One client cannot run multiple queries simultaneously: node-postgres documents that requests issued through a single client are serialized. A pool lets independent application queries use separate clients concurrently, up to the pool’s limit. The node-postgres guide puts the practical case plainly: “If you’re working on a web application or other software which makes frequent queries you’ll want to use a connection pool.” node-postgres: Pooling

Use a pool in a Node.js app with node-postgres
The pg package includes Pool. Create a reusable pool for an application process rather than creating one for each request. For a single independent query, pool.query() is the simplest option: it checks out a client and releases it when the query completes.
import pg from 'pg'
const { Pool } = pg
const pool = new Pool()
export function getUser(id) {
return pool.query('SELECT * FROM users WHERE id = $1', [id])
}
export async function transfer() {
const client = await pool.connect()
try {
await client.query('BEGIN')
// Run every statement in this transaction on this client.
// Perform the transaction's work here.
await client.query('COMMIT')
} catch (error) {
await client.query('ROLLBACK')
throw error
} finally {
client.release()
}
}
// During graceful shutdown:
await pool.end()
This is an illustrative pattern, not a complete shutdown implementation. In production, handle rollback failures according to your application’s error policy. Call pool.end() when the process is shutting down gracefully, or when a short-lived script has finished its database work.
Keep transactions on one client
A transaction depends on successive statements using the same database session. Acquire one client with pool.connect(), run every transaction statement through that client, and release it in a finally block so errors do not strand a checked-out connection. pool.query() is for independent queries; it is not the transaction API, because separate calls may use different clients.

Choose pool size from the connection budget
Pool size is a capacity decision, not a universal tuning number. The node-postgres API documents a default maximum of 10 clients per pool. Its pool starts empty and opens clients as needed; when the maximum is reached and every client is checked out, waiting requests enter a FIFO queue. The documented default is a starting behavior, not a recommendation for every workload. node-postgres: Pool API

Then reserve room within the database’s connection budget for other applications and operational clients, including migrations and monitoring. Sequelize’s documentation likewise notes that pools are not shared between Sequelize instances and gives an illustrative budget that reserves capacity for other users; its example is not a formula for another database or workload. Sequelize v7 alpha: Connection pool
- Too many connections: The aggregate of application pools can exceed the database’s allowed active clients.
- Too few connections or a saturated pool: Requests can wait for a client, increasing response time or causing acquisition timeouts.
- A larger pool is not automatically faster: Database capacity and query behavior constrain throughput, so raising the maximum can add contention without improving useful work.
Monitor query latency alongside pool totals, idle clients, waiting requests, and acquisition timeouts. In node-postgres, the pool exposes total, idle, and waiting client counts; a rising waiting count can reveal saturation even when the database itself is still accepting connections.

In a fixed deployment, the number of processes may be fairly predictable. In a serverless or rapidly autoscaling deployment, estimate the maximum number of live instances and multiply it by each instance’s possible database connections. A per-instance pool that looks small can still produce a large aggregate when many instances run at once.

A managed pooler can accept many application-side connections and multiplex them onto fewer database connections. That can help manage connection pressure, but the service has its own plan limits and connection behavior; check both before relying on it. For example, Prisma Postgres documents PgBouncer in transaction mode and plan-specific pooled and direct connection limits. Its page lists pooled limits of 50 for Free and Starter, 250 for Pro, and 500 for Business, with lower direct limits. These are provider plan limits, not general PostgreSQL limits, and may change. Prisma Postgres: Connection pooling
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Know when transaction pooling changes behavior
With transaction-mode pooling, a database connection is assigned for a transaction rather than held as a persistent session for one application client. Prisma Postgres documents that session state does not persist between transactions in this mode. Code that assumes session-level settings or other state will carry over may therefore behave differently.
The provider recommends direct connections for migrations, schema introspection, administration, LISTEN/NOTIFY, session-level settings, and long-running queries that exceed its stated timeout. Treat those as provider-specific operational guidance, and consult the current documentation for the service and plan you use.

ORM pools and driver defaults are not interchangeable
Pooling configuration depends on the layer that owns the connections. Sequelize v7 alpha documents a default maximum of five active connections per pool and options including max, min, acquire, and idle. It also says a pool is not shared between Sequelize instances. The cited page is specifically for v7 alpha; defaults and release status can change.
For Prisma ORM v7 relational databases, driver adapters use the supplied Node.js driver, so pool defaults and configuration come from that driver. Do not assume connection-limit instructions for Prisma v6 apply to a v7 application without checking its adapter and exact version. Prisma ORM: Database connections
Quick Recap
Practical checklist
- Create a reusable pool per application process, not a new pool per request.
- Use
pool.query()for a single independent query. - Use one checked-out client for every statement in a transaction, and release it in
finally. - Set the pool maximum based on the database connection budget across peak processes or instances, with capacity reserved for other clients.
- Track waiting clients and acquisition timeouts as well as query latency.
- For a transaction-mode external pooler, verify whether the workload depends on session state; use the appropriate direct connection for documented session-dependent operations.
