Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If your mouse pointer drifts, moves erratically, or the cursor seems to move on its own in Windows 11, first work out which input device is causing it. Check the mouse and its connection, isolate a laptop touchpad, then review pointer settings. The right fix depends on whether the cause is a wired mouse, a USB wireless receiver, Bluetooth, the touchpad, or Windows settings.
Identify which device is moving the pointer
On a laptop, an unintended touchpad input can look like a faulty external mouse. Disconnect external pointing devices and check whether the touchpad alone still produces the movement. Then, if your manufacturer provides a way to disable or avoid the touchpad temporarily, test the external mouse without touching the touchpad. This separates the two input paths before you change settings.
If the pointer moves erratically with only one device connected, troubleshoot that device and its connection first.
Check the mouse and its connection
Microsoft Support recommends checking the mouse’s power, battery or charge, cable, sensor, USB port, and wireless receiver. A sensor blocked by dirt, an unreliable cable, or a loose connection can cause inconsistent movement.

- For a wired USB mouse, check the cable and unplug and reconnect it. Try a different USB port and connect directly to the PC instead of through a hub.
- For a USB wireless mouse, check its battery or charge and reseat the receiver. If reconnecting it does not help, Microsoft’s guidance suggests disconnecting the receiver for about 10 seconds and plugging it back in. Some mice or receivers have a reset button.
- For any mouse with a sensor, make sure the sensor area is clean and unobstructed.
Test the mouse on another PC. If it has the same problem there, Microsoft says replacement may be needed. If it works on the other PC, that points toward a cause on the original computer, such as its settings, connection, or drivers, but does not prove which one is responsible. See Microsoft’s mouse and keyboard troubleshooting guidance.
Review Windows pointer settings
Windows 11 puts the main mouse controls under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse. Check the Mouse pointer speed slider. A speed that feels too high or too low can make normal movement seem unpredictable, but changing it does not establish whether the mouse hardware is faulty.

Microsoft’s instructions say to turn on Enhance pointer precision to make the pointer more accurate when moving slowly. For additional controls, open Additional mouse settings > Pointer Options. Change one setting at a time and test the pointer before changing another, so you can tell whether the adjustment affected the behavior. See Microsoft’s mouse settings instructions.
Troubleshoot a Bluetooth mouse
If you use Bluetooth, confirm that the mouse is charged, switched on, and within range. Switch it off and on, then test the pointer again. If the mouse feels sluggish near a USB 3.0 device, move the mouse or that USB device and see whether the behavior changes; Microsoft notes that an unshielded USB device plugged into USB 3.0 can interfere with a sluggish Bluetooth device.

If the pointer still moves unexpectedly when the touchpad is the only pointing device in use, check its driver. Microsoft recommends looking for recommended touchpad driver updates through Windows Update first. You can also use Device Manager; the touchpad may be listed under Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices.
