A Moto Tag 2 does not continuously transmit its position like a live GPS tracker. When it is away from your phone, Find Hub can update the map only after a participating Android device detects the tag over Bluetooth and reports that sighting. An old timestamp can mean there has been no newer detection—not necessarily that the tag is broken.
Work through the checks below in order: read the location status, test the tag nearby, verify Find Hub and account settings, then check battery, app, and firmware. Reset only after the less disruptive steps fail.
Why isn’t my Moto Tag 2 updating its location?
The tag has two different locating modes. Nearby finding uses a direct connection between your phone and tag; remote finding relies on other participating Android devices detecting the tag and securely reporting where it was seen. The remote map therefore shows the latest reported sighting, not a continuously refreshed position. Motorola describes the two modes in its Moto Tag 2 User Guide.
Bluetooth Low Energy supports detection. Bluetooth Channel Sounding and Ultra Wideband (UWB) can help a compatible phone pinpoint a tag nearby, but those features have device and software requirements: Channel Sounding requires a supported Android phone with Bluetooth 6.0 and Android 16 or later; UWB requires a UWB-capable Android 12-or-later phone with UWB enabled, and availability varies by region. These are compatibility requirements, not a guarantee that every phone can show precise nearby direction or distance.

So first distinguish a stale remote sighting from a failed local connection. In Find Hub, select your Moto Tag 2 and check whether the map identifies a nearby/current position or a last-known location. If the tag is with you, try Find nearby or Play sound. If it is elsewhere, the displayed position is the most recent network-reported sighting. You can choose Mark as lost to be notified if the network detects it later. See Motorola’s Find your tag guidance.
How do I refresh my Moto Tag 2 location?
You cannot force a remote update if no participating Android device has recently detected the tag. If you have the tag nearby, however, you can test the direct connection and remove common obstacles:

- The moto tag 2 stays lightweight and ultra-compact, slipping effortlessly into wallets, luggage tags, and small pouches. And despite its thin design, it’s fully IP68-rated5 to withstand water, dust, rain, and rough conditions, ready for every commute, trip, or adventure.
- Move the tag and paired phone out of an elevator, basement, underground parking area, or other location where radio signals may be obstructed. Motorola warns that Bluetooth signals can be blocked or weakened in elevators and underground areas.
- Turn on Bluetooth on the phone, and make sure the phone has Wi-Fi or mobile data so Find Hub can communicate online.
- Open Find Hub, select the tag, and try Find nearby or Play sound.
If a nearby command works but the remote location remains old, that confirms the phone can communicate with the tag locally at that moment. It does not establish that a new remote network sighting has been reported.

Why does Find Hub show an old location?
A remote update depends on a participating Android device passing within Bluetooth detection range and reporting the tag’s location to Find Hub. If no such device has detected it recently, Find Hub may keep showing the previous sighting. This is a limitation of network-based finding, not proof on its own that the tag or its battery has failed.

- Water and Dust Resistant: IP67 rating offers protection against dust and water immersion between 15 cm and 1 meter for up to 30 minutes
- Compatible with Galaxy Devices Only
Check the paired phone’s connection and Find Hub setup as well. The phone needs internet access, Bluetooth, a Google Account, Find Hub, and the relevant permissions. Make sure the correct Google Account is active and that the tag appears in Find Hub. Also confirm the Find Hub setting Allow device to be located is enabled. Motorola’s Android 16 example shows the path Settings > Google > All services > Find Hub; menu names and placement can differ by phone, so search Settings for “Find Hub” if you do not see it.
Check the Moto Tag 2 battery and app status
In the Moto Tag app, select the tag to check its battery information and connection status. The app also provides sound and firmware-update functions; Motorola’s Moto Tag app support page describes its features.

If the tag does not respond or will not beep, inspect its replaceable CR2032 coin-cell battery. Make sure it is seated correctly, with the positive side facing up, and replace it if discharged. Follow the guide’s instructions: use the included pin at the pinhole, not the buzzer hole.
Update firmware and reconnect before resetting
If the tag responds but its software or pairing may be the problem, try these steps in order:
- In the Moto Tag app, open the tag and select More > Firmware. Install an update if one is offered.
- If the pairing pop-up does not return, press the tag button once to trigger Fast Pair. If pairing still fails, update Google Play services and restart the paired phone before trying again.
- Before a reset, remove the tag from Find Hub and forget any remaining saved Bluetooth record for it on the phone.
- To reset the Moto Tag 2, press the button once, then immediately press and hold it for five seconds until the first beep. Wait for the second confirmation beep. A reset clears the tag’s existing configuration, so you will need to set it up again.
Why can’t Find Hub find my tag?
Use what you have tested to narrow down the fault. If Play sound or Find nearby works, revisit the correct Google Account, the phone’s Find Hub location setting, internet access, and the expectation that remote updates require network detections. If the tag will not power on, beep, connect nearby, or accept a firmware update after you have checked its battery and pairing, consult the Moto Tag 2 support hub.
