A MagSafe charger can charge slowly because of an underpowered or mismatched adapter, poor alignment, a case or object between the phone and charger, temperature limits, connected wired accessories, or heavy iPhone use. Start by removing those common obstacles before buying anything; the right adapter depends on your iPhone and MagSafe Charger generation.

Check the adapter and charging setup

There is no single wattage that guarantees the fastest MagSafe charging for every iPhone. Apple’s requirements differ by charger and iPhone generation, and actual power varies with the adapter and system conditions.

  • For compatible configurations described in its current MagSafe setup guidance, Apple recommends a 30W-or-greater Apple USB-C power adapter or a compatible third-party adapter. Apple describes peak power delivery of up to 25W for listed compatible combinations—not a sustained or guaranteed rate for every setup. Apple’s MagSafe Charger setup guidance sets out the applicable compatibility details.
  • For iPhone 15 and earlier, Apple says MagSafe can provide up to 15W with an Apple USB-C adapter rated at 20W or greater, or a comparable USB-C Power Delivery adapter. This is model-specific guidance, not a universal requirement for newer configurations. See Apple’s fast-charge guidance.

Before choosing an adapter, identify your iPhone model and MagSafe Charger generation. If you use a third-party adapter for the iPhone 15-and-earlier guidance, check that it supports USB Power Delivery. A higher wattage alone does not establish that an adapter is suitable for every charger configuration.

Fix alignment, case, and surface problems

  1. Disconnect the iPhone from USB if it is plugged in. Apple says wired charging takes precedence over wireless charging.
  2. Remove the case, wallet, and any other item between the iPhone and charger. Thick, metal, or battery cases can interfere with wireless charging. If removing the case improves charging, consider a case designed for MagSafe; a new case is not guaranteed to increase speed.
  3. Connect the MagSafe Charger to power before placing the iPhone on it. Set the charger face up on a flat, clear surface, away from metal objects or foreign material, then center the iPhone on the charger.
  4. Keep the phone and charger still while charging. Movement can disrupt the connection.

Apple’s instructions for wirelessly charging an iPhone recommend removing a thick, metal, or battery case if the phone charges slowly.

Let the iPhone return to a normal temperature

Charging may slow or pause if the iPhone becomes too warm or too cold. Apple recommends an ambient charging range of 0°C to 35°C (32°F to 95°F). Move the phone out of direct sunlight or a hot space, and let it return to a normal temperature before trying again. If it tends to heat up while charging, remove its case. Apple explains these limits in its guidance on thermally limited charging on iPhone.

Disconnect accessories and reduce heavy use

Unplug wired USB-C or Lightning accessories while charging wirelessly. Apple says connected accessories can limit wireless charging to comply with regulatory standards. Processor-intensive games and apps, camera use, or high-quality video playing on a bright display can also slow charging. For a useful check, stop intensive activity and leave the screen off for a while.

Check Battery settings for clues

On supported software, open Settings > Battery and look for a Slow Charger message or a temperature-related notice. Apple says the Slow Charger message indicates that the connected charger may not be capable of optimal power; it does not, by itself, mean the iPhone or charger is faulty. Treat the notice as a reason to check adapter compatibility, not as a diagnosis of failed hardware. Apple describes the message and other speed factors in About iPhone charge speeds.

Use this troubleshooting order

  1. Confirm the iPhone is charging and disconnect any USB cable.
  2. Remove the case, wallet, and objects between the iPhone and charger; place the charger face up on a clear, flat surface.
  3. Connect the charger to power first, then position the iPhone and leave it still.
  4. If either device feels warm, move it to a cooler location away from sunlight and let it cool. Avoid charging outside Apple’s recommended ambient range.
  5. Disconnect wired accessories and pause demanding apps, games, camera use, or video playback.
  6. Check Settings > Battery for a Slow Charger or temperature-related notice.
  7. If slow charging persists, verify that the adapter meets the requirement for your exact iPhone and MagSafe Charger generation before replacing it.

Apple’s cited guidance does not establish a universal time-to-charge or a guaranteed improvement from any single troubleshooting step; charging speed depends on the model and conditions.
