A keyboard key that appears to do nothing may be a dead key, not a broken one. It sets an accent or other input state; pressing a compatible letter next can combine the two into a character such as ê. The behavior comes from the active keyboard layout or input method, so check that mapping before treating the key as a hardware problem.
What a dead key does
“Dead” describes what you see: the key does not immediately print a normal character on its own. Instead, it changes the input context so the next keystroke can complete a character. The Unicode Consortium’s LDML keyboard specification gives circumflex followed by e as an example that produces ê.
This differs from an ordinary character key, which generally emits its mapped character as soon as you press it. A key’s physical marking does not by itself determine what appears; the active layout maps keys to characters and may assign a key a dead-key function.
Why the next letter may change—or not
After a dead key, the layout or input method checks whether the following character can combine with the pending accent. If the combination is supported, the input becomes a single accented character. Microsoft documents a German-layout example in which circumflex followed by o produces a character with a circumflex.

If the next character cannot combine with the diacritic, the result may instead be two separate characters: first the diacritic, then the character you typed. The outcome therefore depends on the active mapping and the particular sequence, not just on the physical key.
Why apps may see more than one input event
At the operating-system level, Windows can report a dead-character message before the following keystroke produces the combined character. Microsoft’s Keyboard Input Overview explains that when a diacritic cannot combine with the next character, Windows generates separate character messages for the diacritic and the character.

Web pages and browsers may handle the same action as a composition sequence rather than as a simple character for every key press. The W3C’s UI Events specification describes the key value as Dead and composition events during dead-key input. That is why software monitoring individual key events may observe an intermediate state before a final character appears.

Keyboard implementations store layout-specific mappings. Apple’s developer documentation for UCKeyCharSeq describes output associated with a dead-key state in a Unicode keyboard-layout resource.

What to check if the behavior is unexpected
- Check the active layout or input method. A punctuation or accent key may intentionally act as a dead key in the current mapping. Look at the keyboard configuration for your operating system and language; the exact settings path varies by platform and version.
- Try a compatible letter. If the next character combines with the accent, the key is functioning as a dead key. If it does not, the diacritic and letter may appear separately when that sequence is unsupported.
- Compare with another app or text field. A web page or other program may expose composition behavior differently from a basic text editor. Intermediate input events do not necessarily mean the physical key failed.
- Only then investigate a physical fault. The behavior described here can be caused by layout mapping alone. A replacement keyboard or keycap would not correct a layout-driven dead-key mapping.
Dead key or broken key? The useful distinction
- Dead-key state: the press changes input context, so there may be no visible character until the next key.
- Supported composition: the next key completes one character, such as ê.
- Unsupported sequence: the accent and following character may be emitted separately.
- Physical key problem: not established merely because a key waits for another press; first rule out the active layout or input method.
