Why do my iron shots fly too high?
A high iron can result when the clubface delivers more loft at impact than suits the shot. TrackMan explains that excess dynamic loft can send the ball higher and reduce distance; too little dynamic loft, by contrast, can produce a flight that is too low with excessive rollout. The aim is a useful trajectory and predictable distance, not the lowest possible launch. TrackMan’s dynamic-loft explanation describes the measurement and its effects.
Dynamic loft is not the number on the club
Static loft is built into the club. Dynamic loft is the vertical angle of the clubface at the contact point at maximum compression. Your delivery changes the loft presented to the ball, so two golfers using the same iron—or the same golfer on different swings—may deliver different lofts. TrackMan’s 2024 article gives tour-average 6-iron dynamic lofts of 20.2° for the PGA Tour and 23.6° for the LPGA Tour. Those are tour averages, not targets for every golfer.
Several parts of delivery can affect height
Dynamic loft is influenced by attack angle, shaft bend, how the clubhead is released, the face’s relationship to the club path and where the ball strikes the face. A high shot by itself does not show which factor is at work. TrackMan’s dynamic-loft overview outlines these contributing factors.

For an iron played from the ground, a descending, negative attack angle is typically part of an effective strike. That does not mean you should steepen your swing indiscriminately or simply try to hit down harder. Attack angle and delivered loft are related measurements, and contact quality matters too. Why do my irons go too far?
“Too far” can describe different misses: excessive carry, a normal carry with too much rollout, or a club that travels farther than expected for its number. Those patterns do not necessarily share a cause. Record carry and total distance separately, and compare normal strikes with the same club in similar conditions. A single unusually long shot is not enough to diagnose a swing or equipment problem.

Dynamic loft is one possible factor in the height-and-carry pattern, but flight alone cannot establish that it—or a particular shaft, ball or iron—is responsible. Spin and impact location also help explain how a shot flies and lands. TrackMan defines spin loft as the three-dimensional relationship between clubhead movement and face direction; it is approximately dynamic loft minus attack angle. Higher spin loft generally means more spin when other factors are equal. TrackMan’s spin-loft article reports 6-iron tour averages of 24.3° for the PGA Tour and 25.9° for the LPGA Tour; these figures describe those tour averages, not a universal prescription.
How to investigate the pattern
- Define the miss. Note whether the problem is high flight, excess carry, excess rollout or an unexpected distance for that iron. Keep carry and total distance as separate observations.
- Look for repetition. Compare several ordinary strikes with the same club under similar conditions. Set aside obvious mishits and unusual conditions rather than letting one shot dictate a swing change.
- Check strike and delivery data, if available. Launch, dynamic loft, attack angle, spin and impact location can help distinguish possible causes. A launch monitor is a measurement tool, not a cure. There is no universal target number established here: appropriate delivery depends on the golfer, club, speed and intended trajectory.
- Try a controlled flight exercise. PGA professional Brendon Elliott’s PGA.com instruction recommends using one club to hit three different flights toward the same general target. Keep the motion controlled; do not force a steep downward strike or exaggerated hand action. The instruction also cautions that when the body stops and the hands take over, loft can be added. - Get individual help if the pattern persists. A coach can assess delivery and contact; a fitter can check club specifications alongside your measured delivery. These address different parts of the problem, and flight alone does not establish that a particular club or shaft is the answer.
How to choose the next adjustment
Judge any practice change by more than launch height. Compare its effect on carry, spin and landing behavior, strike consistency and directional control. A lower-looking flight is not an improvement if it makes distance control or contact less reliable.

If the issue appears across several clubs, measured delivery and strike evidence can help determine whether coaching, a fitting or both are worth pursuing. If it occurs with one iron, have that club’s specifications and your contact with it checked before assuming the swing is the cause. These are practical ways to organize the diagnosis, not guarantees that one type of help will solve every pattern.

What not to change on guesswork
- Do not assume the iron’s stamped loft is the loft delivered at impact.
- Do not treat “hit down harder” as a universal fix. A descending attack angle is typical for a ground-struck iron, but multiple delivery factors can affect dynamic loft.
- Do not assume a high shot is automatically bad; whether it is a problem depends on your distance-control needs and conditions.
- Do not buy a different shaft, ball or iron head as a cure based only on ball flight. The sources identify multiple possible causes but do not establish any one product as the solution.
- Do not use tour-average measurements as personal targets. Even TrackMan’s 2024 optimizer example—a 6-iron dynamic loft of 22.4° at 80 mph club speed for a mid trajectory—is an example under stated assumptions, not a fitting rule for all golfers. TrackMan explains the example.
