Your iPhone usually cannot print by plugging a USB cable directly into a printer because Apple’s documented iPhone printing method is AirPrint over a network—not a direct USB connection. For AirPrint, the printer must support AirPrint and share a Wi-Fi network with your iPhone. A printer described as USB-only is documented for USB printing or scanning from a Mac, not as a wired iPhone printer.
Why a printer cable usually does not work with an iPhone
Apple’s iPhone printing instructions use AirPrint. That means the iPhone sends a print job to a compatible printer over a network; it does not make a standard printer USB cable the connection between the phone and printer. Apple says AirPrint can work over Wi-Fi or a wired network connection, but “wired” here means the printer can be connected to the network by cable—not that the iPhone is plugged directly into the printer.
Apple’s AirPrint guidance makes a separate distinction for USB-only printers: they support driverless printing or scanning from a Mac through USB. That does not establish compatibility with an iPhone, even if a cable or adapter physically fits.

What you need to print from an iPhone
- An exact printer model that supports AirPrint.
- A network connection for the printer and the iPhone on the same Wi-Fi network.
- An app that supports printing; not every iPhone app has a Print option.
Check the printer’s exact model in Apple’s About AirPrint information or with the printer manufacturer. Do not assume that another model in the same product line has the same capability.

How to print using AirPrint
- Connect the printer to your network. Use its display or control panel to select Wi-Fi, or follow the manufacturer’s setup instructions. Some printer setups use a Mac setup assistant; Apple’s guidance describes disconnecting the USB cable after that setup.
- Connect your iPhone to the same Wi-Fi network. The printer and phone need to be on the same network for the usual AirPrint discovery process.
- Open the document or item in an app that supports printing. Tap the app’s Share, More, Reply, or Actions menu, as applicable, then tap Print.
- Select the printer and submit the job. Choose the AirPrint printer from the list and confirm the print options.
Menu names and locations vary by app. Apple’s step-by-step instructions are in Use AirPrint to print from your iPhone or iPad.
If your printer does not appear
- Check compatibility: confirm that the exact model supports AirPrint. If Apple identifies it as USB-only, its documented USB printing support is for Mac, not the direct iPhone workflow.
- Check the network: make sure the printer is connected to Wi-Fi and the iPhone is on that same network.
- Check the app: if there is no Print option, look in the app’s help or menus. Some apps do not support printing.
- Follow model-specific setup steps: consult the printer maker’s instructions if the control panel or network setup differs. Apple’s Wi-Fi setup overview describes that setup can vary, including cases where a Mac assistant is used.
What if the printer only has USB?
If the printer has no AirPrint support, Apple’s documentation does not establish a generic USB adapter or cable as a reliable way to print directly from an iPhone. Avoid buying an adapter on the assumption that a physical connection guarantees compatibility. If iPhone printing is essential, consider an AirPrint-compatible Wi-Fi printer, and verify AirPrint support for the exact model with Apple or its manufacturer before buying.
