Returning to a coding agent and finding an empty checklist can feel like lost work. But a blank task list does not prove the work was deleted: the list may have lived only in a chat, temporary session memory, a workspace, or an external tracker. Those layers persist differently, so the right fix depends on which one your agent uses.

What “task list” can mean

A coding agent may appear to have one task manager, but several kinds of state can sit behind that interface. Work may be recoverable in one place and absent in another.

  • Conversation history: messages and decisions in a particular chat. A new chat may not inherit them.
  • Session memory: temporary context available while a session is active. It may be cleared when the session ends.
  • Durable project memory or files: notes stored in a repository or another persistent location. These can be available across conversations if the agent is directed to them.
  • Workspace or tracker state: code changes in an agent workspace, or tasks recorded in a team issue tracker. These are separate from chat history and may have their own retention rules.

Because these layers are distinct, an empty checklist may mean you opened a different chat, session, or workspace—not that the agent erased every copy of the plan.

Why a new chat may look like a reset

In Visual Studio Code, a new chat starts without another chat’s conversation history. A fork, by contrast, inherits history up to the point where you created it. VS Code also distinguishes conversation context from memory: user and repository memory can persist across conversations, while session memory is cleared when the session ends. See Microsoft’s documentation on sessions and chats and documentation on Copilot memory.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

These options serve different purposes. Fork a conversation when you want to branch from its prior discussion; use a new session for unrelated work. A fork preserves conversation history, but it should not be assumed to create an independent code worktree.

How session continuity differs across OpenAI products

OpenAI’s Agents API and Codex Cloud have different documented continuity models, and neither should be treated as a rule for every coding agent.

Agents API sessions

OpenAI says the Agents API retains session state so work can continue across turns. If an event stream disconnects, retrieve the existing session and its saved items before retrying. An idle session by itself does not establish that the task succeeded; inspect the outcome. The guidance is in OpenAI’s Agents API FAQ.

Codex Cloud tasks

For unfinished Codex Cloud work, OpenAI advises continuing in the original task. Starting another task creates a separate workspace and does not recover uncommitted changes from the earlier task. Check the Codex Cloud guidance for its task and integration workflows; availability can depend on the product and account.

How to keep the plan between sessions

Put the plan somewhere durable rather than relying on chat context alone. A short repository note is useful for project work; a team issue tracker is often a better home for work shared across projects or people.

  1. Before you leave: ask the agent to update a task note in the repository. Include the goal, completed work, remaining steps, key decisions, verification status, and relevant file paths.
  2. Use the team’s tracker where appropriate: if your workflow already uses an issue tracker, keep shared work there and link to relevant code or notes. Codex Cloud documentation describes GitHub and Linear integration workflows, but confirm what is currently supported for your product and account.
  3. When you return: resume the intended chat if its conversation history matters. Otherwise, start fresh and explicitly direct the agent to the repository note or issue—for example, “Read the task note in the repository and continue from its remaining steps.” Do not assume a new chat will automatically import a prior checklist.
  4. Check the workspace: if code changes matter, make sure you have opened the workspace associated with the original task. A saved plan and uncommitted code are different things.

Archive, delete, and workspace cleanup are not the same

In VS Code, archiving a session hides it without deleting it. Deleting is permanent, cannot be undone, and can remove an associated worktree. Before deleting a session or workspace, check for important uncommitted files that exist only there. If you want to clear the session from view but preserve it, archive it instead. Microsoft explains these distinctions in its session management documentation.

Diagnose a missing task list

  • Which product and surface were you using: a chat, a coding-agent task, or an API session?
  • Did you reopen the original chat or task, or create a new one?
  • Could the session have been archived, or was it permanently deleted?
  • Is the plan saved in a repository note or team tracker, or only in conversation context?
  • Are the code changes in the original workspace, and could they still be uncommitted?
  • If a stream disconnected, have you retrieved the saved session and checked its reported result before retrying?

What to compare when choosing a coding agent

“Has a built-in task manager” is not enough to tell you whether work will be recoverable. Compare the parts of the workflow that govern continuity:

  • Can you resume or fork chat history?
  • Does the product have memory outside chat context, and which memory scopes persist?
  • Does each task use a distinct workspace, and how long is that workspace retained?
  • Can you archive and restore sessions, and what does deletion remove?
  • Can work link to your repository or the team’s issue tracker?

These distinctions are product-specific. The available documentation does not establish that every agent automatically saves or imports a checklist, or that every empty list represents deleted work.
