A more detailed prompt can clarify what you want from a running coach; a useful training history can show what you have actually been doing. Recent workouts, missed sessions, current fitness, preferences, and recovery all add context a one-time instruction cannot provide. That does not prove history always matters more than prompt wording, or guarantee better results. It does explain why a coach that can use a runner’s accumulated record may give more relevant guidance.

What a prompt tells a running coach—and what history adds

A prompt captures your request now: perhaps you want to run a half marathon, train four days a week, or avoid speed workouts. Training history adds a timeline against which to judge that request: how often you have run, which sessions you completed, how training has changed, and whether there have been interruptions.

The distinction matters because a target and a training pattern are not the same thing. If your stated goal is ambitious but your recent weeks have been inconsistent, a coach needs both pieces of information to make its guidance relevant. History is useful only if the service can access it, interpret it, and adjust its recommendations in response.

No running-specific head-to-head study has shown that training history outperforms prompt engineering. Treat the headline as a practical observation about context, not a proven ranking of inputs.

What a useful running history includes

Mileage alone can miss the context a training plan needs. Runna says its coach-built, rules-based system considers factors such as running ability, days available to run, preferences, interruptions to training, and completed workouts when building or adjusting a plan. It may suggest changes to pace targets based on completed sessions. See Runna’s explanation of how it builds a plan around current fitness.

Garmin describes a different set of adaptive behaviors for Garmin Run Coach: the plan can adjust workouts and rest days, respond to missed workouts, and take activities such as cycling or tennis into account. These are provider descriptions, not an independent comparison of outcomes. The product page does not establish eligibility for every device or configuration. Details are at Garmin Run Coach.

A record is not the same as an adaptive plan

An activity appearing in an app does not mean it will change your next workout. The important question is what the coaching service does with the record: whether it adjusts targets, rearranges sessions, changes progression, or simply stores the activity.

Runna’s support documentation explains how to log, link, or manually add an activity. It also cautions that a manually logged race will not always automatically adjust the rest of a plan, replace a long run, or change mileage progression. You can review its guidance at How to Log, Link, or Manually Add an Activity.

How to give a coach better context

  1. State the immediate goal. Include the event or distance, target date, and what you want help with.
  2. Summarize recent training. Give a time-bounded account of weekly volume, running frequency, and a few representative easy and hard sessions.
  3. Explain changes and interruptions. Note missed workouts, recent breaks, or other circumstances that make the recent record different from your usual routine.
  4. Include cross-training and constraints. Mention other sports and the days or time you can realistically train.
  5. Check the underlying activity record. Correct missing or inaccurate sessions and find out whether the coach uses that data to adjust the plan.

If you are entering this context in a prompt rather than connecting an activity history, make clear which period the summary covers. A short, accurate account is more useful than implying that incomplete data is comprehensive.

What one study can—and cannot—show

A 2020 paper by Shiwali Mohan, Anusha Venkatakrishnan, and Andrea Hartzler describes an adaptive health coach that retained past interactions and exercise performance in long-term memory, then used that context to set future weekly exercise goals. Its six-week observational study involved 21 sedentary participants and focused on a walking application, not an AI running coach. It helps illustrate how retaining history could support adaptation; it does not establish running performance gains or show that history beats better prompts. Read the paper, “Designing an AI Health Coach and Studying its Utility in Promoting Regular Aerobic Exercise”.

Recovery is another part of the context a plan may consider. In a July 29, 2026 company announcement, Runna Head Coach and former Olympian Steph Kessell said: “Recovery is also a key part of everyone’s running journey to prevent plateaus in training and reduce burnout or injury risk, which is why we build it into every plan from day one.” That is a company statement, not independent clinical evidence that a plan prevents injury. The announcement is at Runna’s update announcement.

Questions to ask before relying on a coaching service

  • Which parts of my activity history can it access, and from which connected apps or devices?
  • What changes when I miss a workout, complete a different session, or take a break?
  • Does it account for cross-training, rest, and my stated preferences?
  • Can I inspect and correct the activity record it uses?
  • Does the service explain what its plan is based on, and what it will not adjust automatically?

These questions are more useful than assuming all products described as adaptive behave alike. For readers already using Strava, the company presents a combined subscription context for activity tracking and personalized Runna plans; check Strava’s Strava + Runna subscription page for current details applicable to your region.
