If your 180Hz monitor is running at 60Hz, first select the intended refresh rate for the correct display in Windows. If 180Hz is missing from the list, the mode may be limited by the chosen resolution, monitor input, graphics hardware, cable, adapter or dock, driver configuration, or a monitor setting. Work through the checks below rather than assuming one cable or setting is always to blame.
Set the refresh rate in Windows
- Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
- If you use more than one display, choose the 180Hz monitor from the display selector.
- Under Choose a refresh rate, select 180Hz if it is available, then apply the change.
- Confirm that the resolution remains the one you intend to use. A rate shown with an asterisk in Windows may change the resolution. Microsoft’s Windows instructions explain where to find the selector and note that available rates depend on the display and configuration.
If Windows offers only 60Hz, or the higher rate disappears after you apply a setting, check the complete display configuration.
Check whether the full setup supports 180Hz
A monitor’s headline refresh rate does not necessarily apply at every resolution or through every input. The display, computer graphics capability, selected resolution, and connection path all affect which combinations are available. Intel’s external-display troubleshooting guidance recommends checking supported modes and includes trying another display cable when a desired mode is unavailable.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11- Look up the exact monitor model’s supported refresh rates at your chosen resolution, and check which input supports that mode.
- Confirm that the computer’s GPU output supports the same resolution-and-refresh combination.
- Account for every device between the GPU and monitor, including adapters and docks. A direct connection can help determine whether one of them is limiting the available mode.
Do not assume a cable purchase will fix the problem. If you can, test another known-good cable that meets the monitor and graphics-card makers’ requirements, then recheck Windows. There is no universal cable recommendation without knowing the monitor, GPU, resolution, ports, and connection path.

- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Check the graphics control panel
If your computer uses an NVIDIA GPU, open NVIDIA Control Panel > Display > Change resolution. Select the relevant display and inspect the refresh-rate choices. NVIDIA documents this selection on its Change resolution support page. The control panel cannot make an unsupported hardware path offer 180Hz, so compare its choices with the monitor’s specifications and Windows list.
Inspect the monitor’s on-screen settings
Use the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD) and the manual for its exact model to check for input, DisplayPort, gaming, or refresh-mode settings. Controls and their effects vary by model. For example, ASUS documents a Frame Rate Boost option on the XG27UCG that changes supported refresh behavior in combination with a particular aspect-control setting. That example is not a universal control or instruction for other monitors.

If 180Hz used to be available
If the higher rate disappeared after a software or system change, check the graphics driver and configuration using the GPU maker’s support instructions. Graphics configuration can affect available modes, but there is no single driver version or universal driver fix for every 180Hz display.

Check Dynamic Refresh Rate on Windows 11
Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) is relevant only when the display and hardware support it. Microsoft says DRR requires a display with variable refresh rate (VRR) and at least 120Hz support; it also notes that DRR can limit the maximum refresh rate for some content. If the desktop is set correctly but a particular application or content scenario behaves as though it is capped, check whether DRR is enabled and test with it disabled. Microsoft describes the feature and its requirements in its Windows 11 DRR guidance.
