You shouldn’t nest JavaScript automatically just because indentation is available. Deep conditionals and loops can hide the normal execution path, but extracting every block can replace visible logic with a maze of tiny functions. The useful rule is to choose the structure that makes responsibilities, intent, and behavior easiest to verify.

What “nesting” means—and why it becomes a problem

Nesting places one control-flow structure inside another: an if inside a loop, a loop inside a conditional, or several conditionals inside one another. A little nesting often mirrors the problem naturally. The trouble starts when the reader must track many simultaneous conditions before reaching the work that matters.

At that point, the main path is difficult to scan. Exceptional cases can be buried several indentation levels down, and a change near the outside can alter behavior deep inside. This is a readability and maintenance concern, not a proven numeric law: the SitePoint discussion provides no controlled study or industry statistic showing that a particular indentation level causes a specific defect rate.

There is no universal maximum depth

The SitePoint thread contains several legitimate, conflicting preferences:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • m_hutley argues for a “happy medium.” Function-definition braces should not automatically count as nesting, and extracting code solely to remove indentation can make a program harder to follow. In his view, a function should represent repeated code or an isolated execution.
  • Thallius supports extraction when a short, meaningful name such as copyPerson communicates the behavior. A long name that attempts to encode every condition may be less readable when the logic is used only once.
  • Archibald identifies as a “nester,” writing, “In some JavaScript I am nesting 9 deep.” He considers good comments clearer than a collection of extracted functions in some situations and notes that his codebase already contains 174 functions.
  • rpkamp prefers separating responsibilities into classes, even for a class used once, because the boundary can make testing and design clearer. He also questions the value of private methods, calling them a hard coupling to an anonymous collaborator.

These are participant viewpoints, not measurements. The practical question is whether the current boundary helps a reader understand and safely change the code.

How to flatten nested logic without hiding it

Use guard clauses for invalid or exceptional cases

Inversion handles failure conditions first and leaves the normal path at a shallow indentation level.

function sendInvoice(order) {
  if (!order) return { ok: false, reason: "missing order" };
  if (order.status !== "ready") return { ok: false, reason: "not ready" };
  if (!order.customerEmail) return { ok: false, reason: "missing email" };

  return deliverInvoice(order);
}

The early returns preserve the same decisions as nested branches while making the successful path visible. They are appropriate only when exiting at that point has the same behavior as the original branch, including cleanup, logging, transactions, and returned values.

function buildProfile(record) {
  const person = parsePerson(record);
  const address = parseAddress(record);
  return copyPerson(person, address);
}

copyPerson tells the reader what operation is being performed. Extraction is less helpful when the name becomes a sentence describing a unique combination of conditions, or when understanding the call requires repeatedly jumping to another file.

Separate concerns when the boundary is real

A class or module can be justified even when it has one current caller if it owns a distinct responsibility, has a useful test seam, or is likely to evolve independently. This approach follows rpkamp’s preference, but it trades local visibility for indirection. A boundary that exists only to reduce the number of braces may not be worth that cost.

Keep single-use logic local when that is clearer

A short block can remain inline when its surrounding variables and conditions are essential to understanding it. This addresses m_hutley’s objection to extraction for indentation alone and Thallius’s warning about vague or overlong names. Locality is a feature when it prevents unnecessary navigation.

Comment intent, not indentation

Comments can be the better choice when the flow is locally understandable but the reason for a decision is not obvious. Explain the business rule, invariant, or unusual constraint; do not use a comment as a permanent excuse for tangled control flow. Archibald’s comments-first position is a valid alternative when the code remains navigable.

Nested and flattened versions: what to compare

Question Nested code Flattened or extracted code
Can I scan the main path? May bury the normal path under conditions and loops. Guard clauses and named calls can make the path prominent.
Are names and boundaries clear? Context is visible locally, but intent may be implicit. Good names clarify behavior; poor names conceal it.
How much navigation is required? Usually little; related statements stay together. Calls may require jumps across functions or files.
Are responsibilities cohesive? Unrelated work can accumulate in one block. Real boundaries can separate concerns, but artificial ones fragment flow.
Is testing straightforward? End-to-end setup may be needed for a large block. Focused functions or classes can be tested independently.
Do early exits preserve behavior? Branch structure makes fall-through and cleanup visible. Returns must be checked against cleanup, side effects, and all original outcomes.

A practical refactoring decision process

  1. Mark the normal path. Identify the work a successful request, item, or iteration should perform.
  2. List exceptional paths. Include validation failures, empty results, permission checks, errors, and cleanup requirements.
  3. Try inversion carefully. Move an exceptional case to an early return only if it cannot skip required side effects or resource release.
  4. Look for a responsibility. Extract a function or class when the selected statements form a cohesive operation with a concise, accurate name.
  5. Check locality. If extraction forces repeated navigation or introduces a vague name for one small block, keep the code inline.
  6. Review the call graph. Count the jumps a reader must make, not merely the braces removed.
  7. Test behavior at the boundary. Cover every original branch, including error and cleanup paths, before and after the change.

When nine levels of nesting may still be acceptable

Depth alone does not prove a defect. Generated code, parser state machines, tightly scoped data transformations, or code whose indentation mirrors a domain hierarchy can remain nested if each level is easy to name and verify. Archibald’s report of nine levels demonstrates a personal practice, not a recommendation or a safe limit.

Conversely, shallow code can still be confusing when it is split into dozens of single-use helpers with misleading names. Thallius captured this trade-off by saying, “Even if unnested code is easier to read, it is mostly much harder to understand.” Judge the whole reading experience: visible context, meaningful boundaries, and behavior that can be tested.

What the SitePoint discussion establishes

Paul_Wilkins opened the JavaScript thread on December 24, 2022, after seeing a video about recognizing a “never-nester” style and refactoring overly complex nesting. The SitePoint listing later showed five replies and 2,730 views, with activity ending March 26, 2023. The conversation is useful as a set of experienced opinions and examples, not as a benchmark. It does not establish that nesting causes a particular percentage increase in bugs, nor does it endorse a “three-level rule.”

The Bottom Line

Flatten JavaScript when it exposes the main path or a real responsibility. Keep code nested when locality makes the behavior easier to understand. Prefer clear names, verified early exits, and cohesive boundaries over a target indentation number.
