It’s best to take your Fitbit off before showering. Google Fitbit advises against shower wear to limit contact with soap, shampoo, and conditioner, which can damage a device over time and irritate skin. Water resistance varies by model and can weaken with age or damage, so a water-resistance rating is not a guarantee against every kind of exposure.
Why Fitbit advises removing it before a shower
Google Fitbit says that although its water-resistant devices may tolerate shower exposure, it advises against wearing them in the shower to minimize contact with soaps, shampoos, and conditioners. Those products can cause long-term device damage and skin irritation. The practical distinction is that water resistance does not mean resistance to every shower product or to wear-related weakening.
Google’s general help page says most listed Fitbit devices are water-resistant to 50 meters. That classification does not establish that a device can safely be worn at that depth or in hot or pressurized shower water; the available guidance does not specify those test conditions. Check the exact model, not just the Fitbit name
Google’s help table lists the following device families as water-resistant to 50 meters. It identifies the original Ace separately as showerproof and says not to swim with it. For swimproof or splashproof status, consult the exact model’s user manual; do not assume an unlisted model has the same classification.

These are the classifications shown in Google Fitbit’s general help guidance, not a guarantee about the condition of an individual used device. Age, a drop, repair, or disassembly may affect water resistance. Check Google Fitbit’s model guidance and links to user manuals.
What to do if your Fitbit gets wet
- Take it off and dry it well. Use a lint-free cloth and let the device dry before putting it back on.
- If it contacted something other than fresh water, clean it. Google recommends fresh water and a soap-free cleanser, then drying with a lint-free cloth. It gives Cetaphil as an example, not a required product.
- Do not charge it while wet. Dry it thoroughly before connecting a charger.

Consider the band and your skin
A tracker’s rating does not mean every band is suitable for water. Google specifically cautions that leather, metal, and woven accessory bands may not be appropriate to get wet. Check care guidance for the band you use; changing the band does not change the device’s water-resistance limits. Google recommends Fitbit-branded or authorized bands for best results, noting that third-party bands may fit poorly or use materials that cause sensitivities or other concerns.
If your skin becomes irritated or uncomfortable, loosen or remove the device and let the area rest. Moisture, a tight band, or soap trapped beneath it can contribute to discomfort. This is not a diagnosis; seek appropriate professional advice if irritation persists. Fitbit product-care guidance.

Water exposure and warranty coverage
Water resistance can diminish with normal wear, damage, repair, or disassembly. Google’s Charge 6 regulatory guide says liquid damage voids that model’s limited warranty. Warranty terms can vary by region and purchase date, so check the terms that apply to your device rather than assuming liquid damage is either covered or excluded in every case.
