Fire TV connects to your home Wi-Fi during setup, and Amazon documents Wi-Fi Direct as a feature available to apps on Fire devices. That makes Wi-Fi Direct one possible explanation if you see a separate network name such as DIRECT-… nearby—but Amazon’s documentation does not identify the source of every such network or confirm that all Fire TV models broadcast one.
Why might a Fire TV appear to broadcast Wi-Fi?
Fire TV devices use a household Wi-Fi network for setup. Amazon’s developer documentation also lists Wi-Fi Direct as a feature that Fire-device apps can use. Wi-Fi Direct allows compatible devices to connect directly rather than through a router, so it is a plausible explanation for a separate device-to-device signal.
That possibility is not a confirmed diagnosis of a particular network. Amazon’s documentation does not say that a specific DIRECT-… network belongs to a Fire TV, identify the feature responsible for it, or establish how the behavior varies by model or software version. An SSID by itself is not enough to identify its source.

Seeing an unfamiliar Wi-Fi network near your Fire TV does not, on its own, show that the Fire TV is acting as an internet hotspot, interfering with your router, or compromised. The available Amazon documentation does not establish any of those conclusions.

Amazon-hosted documentation for a different television describes Wi-Fi Direct as a router-free way to send stored content directly to a TV; it also describes displaying an SSID and password for connecting a device without Wi-Fi Direct support. This is general background on the technology, not evidence of what a particular Fire TV is doing.
How to troubleshoot a Fire TV that will not connect to your home Wi-Fi
Amazon’s published troubleshooting steps address the Fire TV’s connection to your router. They are not documented as a way to turn off a separate wireless broadcast.

- Check network status: On Fire TV, open Settings > Network, then press Play/Pause on the remote. Follow the network status tool’s recommendations.
- Reconnect to Wi-Fi: Toggle Wi-Fi off and on, or forget the home network and connect to it again.
- Restart the equipment: Restart the Fire TV, modem, and router.
- Improve the signal: Move the Fire TV closer to the router and check whether the connection improves.
- If setup cannot find the network: Refresh the network list with the Back button, then try restarting the device and router and moving them closer together.
- Consider a wired connection: Some Fire TV devices support Ethernet directly or with an Ethernet adapter. Check compatibility for your model before buying an adapter.
When router changes may help
For weak or unreliable home Wi-Fi, Amazon recommends using the same SSID across supported 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands so a compatible Fire TV can select a band based on signal strength. Compatible Fire TV devices support 6 GHz Wi-Fi 6E connections, and Amazon suggests mesh routers for larger homes. These are coverage and connection recommendations; they do not explain or promise to remove a separate DIRECT-… network.
Likewise, an HDMI extender can help with some physical setup situations, but it is not documented as a fix for a wireless broadcast.
