When an Instagram post won’t upload, the cause sits at one of five layers: your connection, the app or device, the media file, your account, or Instagram itself. You can narrow that down in about ten minutes by changing one thing at a time and watching what happens. Work through the tests below in order, because the first two cost nothing and rule out the most common problems.
Start with the connection
A failed upload is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The first question is whether the problem follows the connection or the content.
- Note the file you are trying to post and the connection you are on, such as Wi-Fi or mobile data.
- Switch to the other connection. On an iPhone or Android phone, turn Wi-Fi off to use mobile data, or join a Wi-Fi network if you are currently on mobile data.
- Retry the same file. Do not change anything else yet.
If the post goes through on the other connection, your original connection was the problem. Try a restart of your router or move closer to it before posting again. If the post fails on both connections, the connection is probably not the cause, and you should move on to the file.
Test the media file
If one post keeps failing while others work, the file itself is the likely suspect. Test it by swapping in a different photo or short video. If the replacement uploads and the original does not, the original file is the problem, and you can work around it by re-exporting or re-saving it before trying again.

This guide does not list current size, aspect ratio, or format limits, because they change and were not verified for this article. If a file fails on several attempts, export it again from your editing app as a standard JPEG or MP4 and try once more. Avoid files that were downloaded from another app and have unusual formats or very large dimensions.
Check the app and device
If every file and every connection fails, the problem is more likely on your phone or in the app. Work through these checks in order:

- Update the app. Open your phone’s app store, search for Instagram, and install any available update.
- Restart the phone. A full restart clears background processes that can block uploads.
- Free up storage. A device that is nearly full can fail to save or process media. Removing unused apps or large files is usually enough.
- Close and reopen the app. Swipe it away from your recent apps list, then open it again and retry.
- Sign out and sign back in. Only do this if you know your login details and can complete any verification prompts. Signing in again can refresh a stuck session.
If none of these help, reinstalling the app is the last device-side step. Uninstalling removes locally stored data, so make sure you can log back in before you do it.

Look for an account restriction
If every upload fails across both connections, and the app and device checks have not helped, look at your account. Check the Account Status area in your settings if the app shows one. Menu names change between versions, so search for the wording the app currently uses rather than relying on a fixed path.
A restriction is one possible explanation, but it is not the only or most likely cause, so do not treat a missing notice as proof that your account is fine or a notice as proof that a single file is acceptable. If you see a notice, follow the steps it gives you and use Instagram’s official help options in the app. A third-party troubleshooting guide from September 2026 frames account restrictions as one of several categories to check, not as a default cause, and it is a useful overview of the same layers covered here: TechYorker’s guide to diagnosing failed Instagram uploads.

Rule out an Instagram-side problem
If your connection, file, and device all test clean, the issue may be on Instagram’s end. There is no official outage status confirmed for this article, so you cannot check a live status page here. Practical steps are simpler:
- Ask someone else on a different account or device whether they can post, or check whether other users are reporting problems.
- Wait a while and retry, rather than repeatedly tapping Share, which can make the situation worse.
- Keep a note of the time and the error you saw, which helps if you contact support later.
Login and identity problems need a separate track
Upload troubleshooting and account recovery are different problems. If the app asks you to confirm your identity, or you cannot log in at all, stop working through the post checks and handle the account issue first.

When Instagram asks for identity confirmation
In some account-access situations, Instagram may ask you to verify your identity, and it may ask for a video selfie as part of that process. Instagram’s official identity-verification help explains what the request involves and how to complete it: Instagram identity verification help.
When you have lost your email or phone number
If you no longer have access to the email address or phone number on your account, Instagram’s help guidance describes how to recover the account or update your account information. That route depends on being able to log in, so start with your saved login options. Official instructions are here: Instagram help for email and phone access.
Which layer to suspect first
The table below matches the pattern you see to the layer most likely involved and the first test to run.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| What you see | Most likely layer | First test |
|---|---|---|
| One file fails, other files upload | Media file | Post a different photo or video |
| Everything fails on one connection only | Connection | Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data |
| Everything fails on every connection | App, device, account, or Instagram | Update the app and restart the phone, then check Account Status |
| Identity prompt or cannot log in | Account access | Follow Instagram’s identity or recovery help |
Work from the top of the table down, changing one thing at a time. Testing several changes at once makes it impossible to tell which one helped.
The steps above will resolve most upload failures. If a post still fails after every test, the remaining explanation is usually at the account or platform level, and the official help pages are the right next step.
