I write again because a finished paragraph is not the only thing writing gives me. The work of finding the words—then reading, revising, and deciding what I actually mean—can change the idea itself. AI can help produce fluent text, but it cannot make that process irrelevant or take responsibility for what I choose to say.
Writing helps me find out what I think
Sometimes I begin with an opinion that feels clear until I try to explain it. A draft makes the weak spots visible: an assumption I have not defended, a point that does not follow, or a question I have not answered. Revising is not just polishing what I already know. It is one way I discover what I mean.
That is a personal judgment, but it has a useful parallel in Duncan Brumby’s account of writing at UCL’s Interaction Centre. He writes that “Writing sits at the centre of much knowledge work: it communicates ideas, shares research, makes arguments, and often helps develop the ideas themselves.” His university commentary describes how drafting, reading, revising, and restructuring can clarify an argument and expose gaps. It is not a clinical claim that writing has the same effect for everyone.

AI can help with a story—and still narrow the starting point
I do not think the choice is between pretending AI has no creative use and declaring that it has made human writing pointless. A controlled online experiment by Anil Doshi and Oliver Hauser recruited 293 participants for an eight-sentence short-story task. In that setting, access to generative AI increased average novelty and usefulness scores. That is evidence about a bounded task, not a verdict on every kind of writing.

The same experiment found a tension worth noticing: AI-inspired stories were more similar to the AI ideas participants received than stories in the human-only condition. In the one-idea and five-idea AI conditions, the study reported similarity results of 5.2% and 5.0%, respectively, above the human-only condition. Those figures describe this study’s comparison; they are not a universal measure of creativity or proof that AI always reduces variety.
The study authors also note that participants could not customize or repeatedly interact with the AI. That matters because a short, limited interaction is not the same as a writer using a tool throughout a long project. I take the findings as a reason to ask two separate questions: did assistance help this particular piece, and did it make the range of possible pieces narrower?

Making sentences and judging them are different kinds of work
AI can move effort away from generating prose and toward evaluating it. Brumby puts it plainly: “The cognitive work does not disappear; it moves—from generating prose to reading and editing it.” That shift can be useful when a tool helps me explore alternatives or get past a blank page. But fluent output is not the same as sound reasoning. Someone still has to decide what belongs, what is accurate, and what the piece should claim.
Brumby’s related caution is that “Tools can speed production, but they increase, not reduce, the need for critical oversight, judgement, and accountability.” I agree. If I use assistance, I still have to stand behind the choices in the final text. The relevant question is not simply whether a machine contributed a sentence, but who checked the sentence and accepts responsibility for it.

How much help can change what authorship means
Readers may understand a work differently depending on the degree of assistance behind it. A 2024 vignette study found that higher levels of AI assistance affected how people assessed a human writer’s authorship, creatorship, responsibility, and disclosure. Because the study asked participants to judge hypothetical scenarios, it does not establish a legal standard or tell us how all readers will respond.
Still, it makes sense to treat authorship as more than a binary label. Brainstorming, editing, drafting, and generating a complete piece are different contributions. If the distinction matters to a reader, student, editor, or institution, being clear about the role of AI may matter too. The study supports taking those perceptions seriously; it does not create a universal disclosure rule.

Why I choose to write again
I choose to write again because I want to take part in the decisions that turn an idea into an argument: what to notice, what to leave out, what needs evidence, and where uncertainty belongs. I value the finished piece, but I also value the chance to test my thinking while making it.

That is my reason, not a conclusion a study can supply for me. AI can be a useful collaborator for some tasks, and there are times when evaluating generated text is worthwhile work in its own right. But when I want to find out what I think and make a case I can answer for, I still want to do the writing.
