If your WordPress save_post callback seems to run twice, first check whether it updates the same post with wp_update_post(). That update fires the save hooks again, re-entering the callback. Remove your callback before the nested update and restore it afterward; also skip revisions and avoid updating when nothing has changed. A second invocation can have other causes, so log the post ID, post type, update flag, and revision status before assuming recursion.
Why does save_post fire twice?
WordPress runs save_post after a post or page is created or updated. Its third argument, $update, indicates whether the post already existed. If a callback calls wp_update_post(), that function saves the post and triggers the save hooks again. The callback can therefore re-enter itself; if it repeats the update on every run, the cycle can continue indefinitely. WordPress documents this recursion risk, and the wp_update_post() reference describes the update function.
But two runs do not automatically mean an infinite loop. Revisions can add another invocation: with revisions enabled, the action may run for a revision and then for the original post. Log what each invocation receives to distinguish a nested update from a revision or another save operation. The save_post reference discusses the revision case.
How to prevent the infinite loop
WordPress’s documented pattern is to remove the callback that is performing the nested update, make the update, and then register the callback again. Match the original callback identity and priority in both remove_action() and add_action(); a mismatch means the callback may remain attached. The following is an illustrative pattern, not a tested, drop-in implementation:

The early return matters: skipping an unnecessary update avoids needless saves as well as recursion risks. Here, the callback is registered to accept three arguments—the post ID, post object, and update flag. WordPress’s save_post reference shows the unhook-and-rehook remedy, and its add_action() and remove_action() references explain callback registration and removal.
How to tell a revision save from a repeated post update
A revision has its own post ID. wp_is_post_revision( $post_id ) identifies a revision and, when applicable, returns its parent post ID. WordPress advises checking that the post is not a revision and that an update is actually needed before changing it from a save callback. See wp_is_post_revision() and the save_post guidance.

- Log the received post ID and post type, the
$updatevalue, and the result ofwp_is_post_revision( $post_id ). - Check the callback and every function it calls for
wp_update_post()or another operation that saves the same post. - Compare old and proposed values; return if they already match.
- If a nested update is required, unhook only the callback responsible for it at its registered priority, then restore it.
Should you use save_post_{post_type} instead?
Use save_post_{post_type} when the logic applies only to one post type; for example, a callback for the book type can use save_post_book rather than receiving saves for every type. WordPress introduced this post-type-specific hook in version 3.7.0. It narrows which posts invoke your callback, but it does not prevent recursion: wp_update_post() still saves that post type and fires its specific save hook. Hook order may matter if your callback interacts with other plugins or callbacks. During insertion or update, save_post_{post_type} runs before generic save_post, followed by wp_insert_post. The wp_insert_post() reference documents that sequence.

When is did_action(‘save_post’) useful?
did_action( 'save_post' ) reports how many times that action has run during the current request. The Plugin Handbook gives an example of returning when it has run more than once, which can serve as a deliberate once-only guard or a diagnostic clue. It does not tell you which operation caused the repeat, and it is not a substitute for checking revisions, comparing values, or preventing a nested update from re-entering your callback.
