If Wordle rejects a guess, first check that it has exactly five letters and was entered and submitted correctly. If those basics are right, the word may simply be missing from the game’s accepted-guess list. A word can be valid English without being accepted by Wordle.
Why does Wordle say a word is not valid?
Wordle checks guesses against a game-specific list, not every word in an English dictionary. An unaffiliated Wordle guide describes this accepted-list explanation, but it is not an official statement of the New York Times’ current list or its complete rules. So recognizing a word—or finding it in a dictionary—does not guarantee the game will accept it.
The current full NYT list of accepted guesses and all of its inclusion or exclusion rules are not established by the sources available here. In particular, there is no basis for assuming that Wordle uses another NYT game’s dictionary or that its list never changes.
What should I check before trying again?
- Count the letters. Make sure the entry contains exactly five letters. Discord Support gives this requirement for its licensed Discord Wordle Activity; controls and details can vary across platforms.
- Check the spelling and input. Look for a typo, a missing letter, or an unintended extra character. Confirm that the letters shown on the board are the ones you meant to enter.
- Submit the guess. Use the Enter key or the on-screen submit control for the version you are playing. Entering letters and submitting are separate actions in the basic flow described by an unaffiliated Wordle guide; the exact control may depend on the platform.
- Consider whether the word is outside the accepted list. If the spelling and length are right but the game still refuses the guess, it may be a list-membership issue rather than an input mistake.
- Refresh if the game may be out of date. In February 2022, after NYT changed its accepted five-letter solution list, ABC News reported that the NYT FAQ advised refreshing the website to sync the game: “To ensure your game is in sync with the updated version, you can refresh the website where you play Wordle.” This is historical sync advice, not a guaranteed fix for every rejection.
- Check which game you opened. If you are playing an unofficial clone, consult that site’s own support: different operators may use different word lists or implementations. If the issue persists in an official app or service, use its support channel.
Does an accepted guess have to be a possible solution?
Do not assume that “accepted guess” and “possible answer” mean the same thing. The sources available here do not establish the complete current relationship between those lists for NYT Wordle, so they cannot confirm whether any particular accepted word could appear as the day’s solution.

Is Wordle using the same dictionary as NYT Crossplay?
No such connection is established. The NYT Help Center documents NWL 2023 for its Crossplay game and says that Crossplay excludes trademarks and proper nouns. That is a Crossplay-specific policy; it does not establish Wordle’s dictionary, its exclusions, or whether Wordle rejects every proper noun.

It can. Discord Support says its licensed Wordle Activity uses the same daily puzzle as NYT Games and requires a valid five-letter guess. That does not establish that every unofficial Wordle site uses the same accepted list or behaves the same way. If a word is rejected, identify the game and platform before concluding that the NYT game itself has rejected it.
