If your Mac won’t recognize a USB accessory, first approve any accessory alert, then test the device directly in another Mac port. For a storage drive, check Disk Utility before attempting repairs: a drive can be connected but missing from Finder because its volume is not mounted. These checks help distinguish a permission, connection, power, or visibility problem without risking your files.
Why won’t my Mac recognize my USB device?
“Not detected” can describe different situations: the accessory shows no sign of connecting, it appears in an app but not Finder, or an external drive is missing from Finder. The right next step depends on which one you see. For a storage device, check Disk Utility before assuming the Mac cannot see the drive at all.
- No connection or power sign: check accessory approval, cable, port, hub, and power.
- Drive absent from Finder: look for the physical device and its volumes in Disk Utility.
- iPhone or iPad not recognized: check both the Mac’s accessory approval and the device’s trust prompt.
Approve the accessory on your Mac
On a Mac laptop with Apple silicon, a new or unknown USB or Thunderbolt accessory may require approval. Unlock the Mac and respond to the connection alert. If you selected “Don’t Allow,” reconnect the accessory and approve it. You can review the setting under System Settings > Privacy & Security.
Apple notes: “If your Mac has been locked for 3 or more days, you might need to unlock it to use a previously allowed accessory again.” See Apple’s instructions for allowing USB and other accessories to connect.

Check the cable, port, hub, and power
- Disconnect and reconnect the device.
- Try another port on the Mac.
- Remove any hub or dock from the connection and connect the device directly to the Mac.
- If using a self-powered USB or Thunderbolt hub, check that its AC adapter is connected.
This direct-connection test is especially useful if you see “USB Devices Disabled” or a message that the device needs more power. Apple’s guidance is to disconnect nonessential devices and check the connection and power; see If you see USB Devices Disabled on your Mac.
Why is my USB drive not showing up on my Mac?
Open Disk Utility and select View > Show All Devices. The sidebar can then show the physical storage device and the volumes it contains. If the device appears but a volume is unavailable or ejected, select that volume and click Mount. Apple explains the sidebar options in View all devices or only volumes in Disk Utility and gives the mounting steps in Mount a volume that’s been ejected.

Why is my external hard drive not showing up in Finder?
Finder visibility and physical-device visibility are different. If the drive appears in Disk Utility but not Finder, check whether its volume is mounted. If neither the device nor a volume appears there, inspect the drive’s cable, connections, and power, then repeat the direct-connection and alternate-port checks. Disconnect nonessential devices while troubleshooting.

Why does my Mac say “USB Devices Disabled”?
The message can indicate that connected devices need more power than the current connection provides. Connect the device directly to the Mac, try another port, and check that any self-powered hub has its AC adapter attached. A powered hub may be relevant if the device’s power needs exceed what the Mac’s connection provides, but first test without the hub and confirm that your Mac and peripheral support the connection you plan to use.
If you are checking the power adapter used with the Mac, Apple’s documented path is to hold Option while choosing Apple menu > System Information, select Power, and inspect AC Charger Information. This shows charging-power information; it does not confirm that a hub or peripheral is compatible. See Apple’s guidance on using a power adapter with your Mac.

If your iPhone or iPad is not recognized
Check for prompts on both devices: approve the accessory alert on the Mac, then tap Trust This Computer? on the iPhone or iPad when it appears. Use a cable that supports both data and charging; a charging-only cable may not establish a data connection. If there is no connection signal, inspect the device’s connector for debris. You can also try another Mac port or another compatible Mac, check for software conflicts, and update system software. See Apple’s steps for when a computer doesn’t recognize an iPhone or iPad.

Check that the port and adapter fit your Mac
Mac models do not all have the same ports or capabilities. Identify your exact Mac model and its available ports before choosing an adapter. A USB-C connector’s shape alone does not guarantee that a particular connection supports every function the device needs. Apple also notes that some devices connected through a hub or external display may not respond because they are incompatible. Consult Apple’s guide to identifying the ports on your Mac before buying an adapter or hub.

When to seek service
If the device remains absent after you have tested a direct connection, another port, a compatible cable, and adequate power, try it on another compatible computer if one is available. If an external drive still does not appear in Disk Utility after checking its cable, connection, and power, the drive or Mac may need service. Apple advises seeking service when the storage device or computer may need repair.
