A BitLocker recovery prompt means Windows could not unlock an encrypted drive using its usual startup checks. It asks for a 48-digit recovery key to verify access. A recent hardware, firmware, or software change can trigger the check; the prompt alone does not prove that someone tampered with your computer. Microsoft’s BitLocker overview explains why recovery may be required.
Why does BitLocker ask for a recovery key?
BitLocker protects an encrypted drive by checking that Windows is starting under expected security conditions. If a hardware, firmware, or software change makes those checks differ from the expected state, Windows may require the recovery key. The change can be legitimate; BitLocker may be unable to distinguish it from an attempt to access the drive outside its normal protections.
Think about what happened shortly before the prompt: a repair or hardware change, a firmware setting or update, a change to boot configuration, or Windows servicing. These are clues, not proof of the cause on a particular computer.
What recent changes can trigger it?
Hardware, firmware, or boot changes
Changes to the hardware or the way the computer starts can affect the security checks BitLocker relies on. Microsoft’s Secure Boot troubleshooting guide documents specific cases: after certain Secure Boot certificate updates, the first boot may produce a temporary measured-boot mismatch. Entering the recovery key can allow the next boot to reseal normally.

A different documented case can cause repeated prompts: network boot (PXE) is first in the firmware boot order, but Windows later starts through a different boot trust chain. For this scenario, Microsoft advises putting the on-disk Windows Boot Manager first, disabling PXE if it is not needed, or—if PXE is needed—using a 2023-signed Windows boot loader. These remedies apply to that documented configuration, not to every recovery prompt.
A narrowly defined Windows 10 update scenario
Microsoft’s August 11, 2026 KB5120249 update note describes a first-restart recovery prompt on a limited set of systems. The conditions include an unrecommended TPM platform validation policy that explicitly includes PCR7, PCR7 binding reported as unavailable, Secure Boot certificate eligibility, and an older Windows Boot Manager. Microsoft says this is unlikely on unmanaged personal devices, so it should not be treated as the usual explanation for a home PC prompt.

How to find the correct BitLocker recovery key
Use the key ID displayed on the recovery screen to identify the matching stored key. If there is more than one saved key, do not guess: compare the ID before entering a key. Microsoft’s recovery-key instructions describe the available lookup locations.

- Check the Microsoft account linked to setup or BitLocker activation. From another device, go to aka.ms/myrecoverykey. If someone else set up the computer or enabled BitLocker, ask them to check their account. On Windows 11 version 24H2 and later, the recovery screen shows a hint of the Microsoft account associated with the key.
- Check a work or school account, or contact IT. If the computer has been associated with an organization, check aka.ms/aadrecoverykey for its BitLocker keys or ask the organization’s IT team. For an organization-managed device, IT is the right support contact.
- Look for an offline backup. Check for a printed copy or a USB flash drive containing a saved recovery-key text file. If the file is on USB, you may need to read it using another device.
- Match the ID and enter the corresponding key. The recovery key is a unique 48-digit number. Confirm that the stored record matches the ID shown on screen before entering it.
What if the recovery key is missing?
Microsoft Support states that it cannot retrieve, provide, or recreate a lost BitLocker recovery key. A repair shop or other software cannot reconstruct the missing key from an encrypted drive.

If you cannot find the key, consider whether a recent change that may have triggered recovery can safely be undone. Do not make further firmware or boot changes at random; on a managed computer, ask IT for help. If the key cannot be found and the triggering change cannot be undone, Microsoft’s remaining option is to reset the device through Windows recovery options. Resetting removes files, so treat it as a last resort.

When you have access to the computer, make sure a recovery-key backup is stored somewhere you can reach if Windows asks for it. Microsoft documents saving a backup to a Microsoft account, printing it, or saving it to a USB flash drive. Keep any printed or digital copy in a secure place, separate from the computer. A USB backup only helps if the key was saved to it beforehand; it cannot retrieve a key that was never stored there or bypass encryption. See Microsoft’s BitLocker recovery-key backup instructions.
