Windows 11 usually does not change your language or region on its own in a single, random event. When the change looks automatic, it is most often one of three things: a language preference syncing from another device signed in with the same Microsoft account, a display-language change that also reorders your Preferred languages list, or a language and regional defaults set during setup or by an organization. Microsoft’s documentation describes each of these mechanisms, but it does not establish that Windows resets language or region settings because your IP address or physical location changed. The fix depends on which setting changed, so start by identifying that.
Identify which setting actually changed
“Language and region” in Windows 11 is not one control. It is several separate settings that affect different things, and a change in one can look like a change in another. Before you reset anything, check what you are seeing:
- Windows menus, Settings, and File Explorer are in a different language: this is the Windows display language.
- Microsoft Store, some apps, or websites open in a different language: this is usually the order of Preferred languages.
- Letters, punctuation, or symbols come out differently when you type: this is the keyboard or input layout.
- Dates, times, numbers, or currency look different, but menus are still in your language: this is the regional format.
- Store listings, prices, or availability changed: this is the Microsoft Store country or region, which is stored separately from Windows language settings.
- The clock is wrong: this is the time zone, which is set under Date & time and is not part of Language & region.
The input indicator on the taskbar shows the active keyboard layout. If it shows a different language code after you switch keyboards, the Windows display language has not necessarily changed. Microsoft’s language and keyboard guidance states this directly: changing the keyboard layout only changes the layout and does not change the Windows display language.

| Setting | What it controls | Where to check it |
|---|---|---|
| Windows display language | Windows interface, including Settings and File Explorer | Settings > Time & language > Language & region > Windows display language |
| Preferred languages | Priority order used by supported Microsoft Store apps and websites. Choosing a display language also moves it to the top of this list. | Settings > Time & language > Language & region > Preferred languages |
| Keyboard / input layout | How keys produce characters and which layout the taskbar indicator shows | Installed language’s Language options > Keyboards |
| Regional format | Date, time, number, and currency conventions | Settings > Time & language > Language & region, under Regional format |

Likely causes, and how to test each one
Cause 1: Language preferences syncing from another PC or account
This is the most common explanation when a setting reappears after you changed it, or changes on a PC you did not touch. Windows Backup can sync language preferences and the dictionary across devices when the relevant options are turned on. Microsoft’s account-data guidance describes this as part of Windows Backup’s preference syncing. Microsoft account sync may also include separate consent controls, depending on your country or region.

To check it, go to Settings > Accounts > Windows backup, then open Remember my preferences and confirm whether Language preferences and dictionary is enabled. Then ask whether the same Microsoft account is signed in on another PC, tablet, or work device. If the setting came back after you signed in on a second device, sync is the likely source. Turning off the option stops future syncing; it does not reverse a change that has already been applied, so you may still need to set the language again locally.
Cause 2: Selecting a display language also reorders Preferred languages
Changing the Windows display language moves that language to the top of Preferred languages. Because Preferred languages also controls how supported Microsoft Store apps and websites choose a language, a change you made for the Windows interface can appear to have changed your browser or Store language as well. Those are two separate settings: you can keep Windows in one language and reorder Preferred languages to change only app and website behavior.

Cause 3: Setup, provisioning, or organization management
Windows Setup and deployment tools can set a default language, locale, and keyboard. Microsoft’s deployment documentation, in its guidance on configuring international settings in Windows, explains that choosing a language during setup can also update other regional settings to defaults associated with that language. If a PC was set up from an image, reimaged, or enrolled in a managed environment, the regional defaults may have been applied during that process rather than by a later change.
If your PC is managed by a work or school, the regional settings may be controlled by administrators, and a local change may be overwritten during the next policy or provisioning cycle. The sources available for this article do not describe how any particular management tool behaves, so confirm with your IT administrator if the setting keeps returning.

Cause 4: A keyboard change that looks like a language change
Adding or switching a keyboard layout can make the taskbar show a different language code, and this is easy to mistake for a display-language change. Check the Windows interface itself. If menus are still in your original language, only the input layout changed. Remove the extra layout under the installed language’s Language options > Keyboards if you did not intend to add it.
What does not establish a cause
Microsoft’s guidance does not establish that a VPN, a change in IP-based location, travel, or a Windows update automatically changes the display language or regional format on its own. If you suspect one of these, treat it as a hypothesis to test rather than a documented trigger: check whether the setting changes while the other factors are constant, and use the sync and setup checks above first.

Restoring the language you want
- Confirm the language is installed. If it is not listed under Settings > Time & language > Language & region, select Add a language under Preferred languages and install it. Microsoft’s language-pack guidance describes the installation steps for Windows 11.
- Go to Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Open the Windows display language dropdown and select the language you want.
- Sign out and sign back in when Windows asks. The display-language change is not applied fully until the session restarts.
- To change only app and website behavior, leave the display language alone and move your preferred language to the top of Preferred languages instead.
- Check Regional format separately. Changing the display language may not change the date, time, or number format, so set those independently if they are wrong.
Be careful with the Microsoft Store country or region
If the problem is that Store prices, availability, or listings changed, do not treat it as a language fix. Microsoft recommends changing your Store country or region only for a long-term move. Store items may not work across regions, and Microsoft account funds do not transfer between regions. Because of these consequences, decide on the Store setting deliberately rather than as part of a language troubleshooting session.

A practical sequence if the setting keeps returning
- Check whether the same Microsoft account is signed in on another device, and whether Remember my preferences includes Language preferences and dictionary.
- Check whether the change happened during setup, reimaging, or enrollment in a work or school account.
- Check whether the taskbar change is a keyboard layout rather than the display language.
- Restore the display language, then adjust Preferred languages and Regional format separately.
- If the setting still returns after these checks, ask your administrator or the account holder on the other device what was changed there.
A recurring change that starts only after a particular update, app, or location is one you should document with dates and screenshots before drawing a conclusion, since Microsoft’s guidance does not tie those events to automatic language changes.

Once you have identified the layer that changed, the fix is usually a single setting in Language & region or Windows backup. The Store country decision is the exception, and should be made deliberately.
