Vault’s source-first approach is meant to make interactive effects easier to adapt to a real React or Next.js product: preview an effect, bring its implementation into your project, then inspect and tune the code instead of treating a demo as a finished component. Jyoti Pathak, Product Manager at Hyperiux, frames the central idea simply: “The interaction is a starting point, not a contract.”

Why an interaction that works in a demo may fail in a product

A visual reference can show what an effect looks like, but it cannot show how it will behave across a site’s actual content, layout, and constraints. Typography changes spacing and rhythm. Real content may be longer or less predictable than sample text. Smaller viewports can alter the composition, while concurrent animations, accessibility requirements, and performance budgets affect whether the effect remains usable.

Recreating an interaction also means making implementation decisions that a preview can hide: timing, DOM structure, responsive behavior, dependencies, cleanup, reduced-motion handling, and assumptions built into the original code. The work is not just matching an appearance; it is making the behavior fit the product around it.

Pathak’s rationale for Vault is that developers should be able to start from an implementation rather than rebuild an effect from scratch, while retaining the ability to change that implementation. Vault is presented as an interaction library for React and Next.js, with cursor, text, transition, scroll, and WebGL interactions among its examples.

What “source-first” means for a developer

Instead of relying only on a fixed abstraction, a developer can inspect the source placed in the project, alter it, remove pieces, or adapt it to the project’s design system. That makes the implementation a working starting point—not a promise that the effect will fit every site unchanged.

The distinction matters when a library’s defaults make decisions on the developer’s behalf. A source-first workflow puts those decisions in view, so the developer can decide what to keep and what needs adjustment. The goal is for the finished site to feel like the developer’s product, not like a recognizable library demo.

Preview, install, tune, ship

Vault describes its workflow as “Preview → Install → Tune → Ship.” The most consequential step is tuning: a preview helps a developer understand an effect, but the installed code must be adapted to the target project’s content, typography, layout, breakpoints, performance budget, and accessibility needs.

  1. Preview: Decide whether the interaction’s behavior and visual character suit the product, rather than judging only whether the demo looks appealing.
  2. Install: Bring the implementation into the project so its code can be inspected and worked on alongside the rest of the product.
  3. Tune: Adjust the effect for real content, layouts, responsive breakpoints, and the project’s accessibility and performance requirements.
  4. Ship: Keep the effect only if it works as part of the product experience; simplify or remove it if the implementation does not earn its complexity.

For a developer evaluating any interaction library, useful questions include: How quickly can I understand what the effect is doing? What information is visible before installation? Which defaults save time, and which quietly take control away? The answers help reveal whether a polished preview is backed by code that can be understood and adapted.

Motion should have a job

Pathak argues against adding movement simply because a library makes it available. Motion can reinforce hierarchy, connect states, clarify feedback, direct attention, or contribute to a product’s visual character. If an effect does none of those things, a simpler implementation may be the better design decision.

This is an important part of the source-first idea: success is not measured by how many effects make it into a page. The implementation should serve the product’s design and behavior, and the developer should be able to remove or simplify it when that is the better fit.

How to assess a source-first interaction library

Vault’s premise suggests a practical checklist for evaluating it—or any comparable library—before committing an effect to a product:

  • Source ownership: Can you inspect and edit the implementation in your project, or are you limited to configuring a fixed abstraction?
  • Adaptability: Can you reshape it for your actual content, layout, and responsive breakpoints?
  • Implementation detail: Are dependencies and cleanup behavior clear enough to understand what the effect adds to the project?
  • Accessibility: Is reduced-motion behavior explained, and can you verify how the interaction behaves for users with different needs?
  • Performance and framework fit: Are performance considerations and client-component requirements clear for your browser and React or Next.js setup?
  • Preview versus installed behavior: Does the preview explain what the installed effect will do, or will important behavior only become apparent after integration?

These questions separate a useful starting implementation from an effect that merely looks convincing in isolation. They are evaluation criteria, not a head-to-head test or a finding that every item has been independently verified for Vault.

Who the approach is for

Vault’s stated audience is developers working with React and Next.js who want interaction examples they can bring into a project and adapt. The approach is especially relevant when a team values direct access to implementation details and expects to tune an effect to its own design system. Developers who prefer a fully managed component with minimal code ownership may value a different trade-off; source-first access is most useful when someone on the team is prepared to review and maintain the code.

Pathak’s invitation is also a practical one: React and Next.js developers can compare notes on which interaction work still feels repetitive. That question points back to the product’s rationale—reduce repeat implementation effort without hiding the decisions that determine whether an effect belongs in a real site.
