When a mobile website already lets someone read an article, browse a menu, or complete a booking, an “OPEN IN APP” or “GET THE APP” interruption adds friction before it adds value. Native apps can be useful, but the case for installing one should be specific to what the visitor is trying to do—not simply a bid for a place on the home screen.
Why app-install prompts frustrate visitors
A visitor may have arrived to finish one small task: check a menu, read a page, or book a service. If the mobile website already works, a full-screen prompt makes that task harder by diverting attention to a separate decision: install an app or dismiss the interruption.
That mismatch reflects different priorities. The visitor may want a quick answer; the business may want repeat visits, purchases, or a channel for notifications. Those are legitimate business goals, but they do not automatically make an app useful to the person currently using the site. “Nobody wants your app” is best read as a pointed critique of unwanted interruptions, not evidence that every user dislikes apps.

When a native app can earn its place
An app is more compelling when it adds a practical capability the mobile website cannot provide as well. Potential advantages include access while offline, closer integration with device hardware, or frequent notifications that the user actually wants. The benefit should be relevant to the task and clear before the user is asked to install anything.

- Offline access: Useful when someone needs content or functionality without a reliable connection.
- Hardware integration: A reason to consider an app when a task depends on device capabilities that a website does not handle adequately.
- Notifications: Valuable when timely updates matter to the user and the user chooses to receive them; not a benefit merely because they give a business another way to reach people.
These are possible advantages, not proof that every service needs an app. If the website already handles the task, the app needs to explain what additional value justifies installation.
How to judge a web-versus-app choice
For a visitor deciding whether to install, or a business deciding how to present its app, ask four questions in order:

- Can the mobile website complete the immediate task? If yes, let the visitor do it without first installing anything.
- Does the app materially improve that task? Look for a concrete difference such as offline use, useful device integration, or genuinely useful notifications.
- What extra effort does installation impose? Account creation, permissions, the download itself, and repeated prompts all add friction. Weigh them against the benefit, not against the business’s desire for more app users.
- Is repeat use frequent and convenient enough to matter? A standalone app is easier to justify when people return often and it makes those visits meaningfully easier. A service used occasionally may not merit another app on a customer’s device.
A better way to offer an app
Make the mobile website usable first. Offer a discreet app link and explain the actual added benefit in plain language. If the visitor declines, let them continue on the website without another prompt. This preserves the option for people who want the app while respecting the needs of people who came to complete a quick task.

A 2016 essay on merchant apps argued that businesses should consider customer frequency and convenience rather than copying competitors. It contrasted services people may use regularly, such as airlines or grocery shopping, with fragmented local restaurant visits, and discussed shared discovery platforms and cloud point-of-sale networks as possible alternatives. Those ideas are an argument about how merchants might serve customers, not proof of current market conditions or a forecast that any particular alternative prevailed.

The same essay reported a figure of 600,000 U.S. restaurants and attributed it to NPD, but gave no year for that statistic. It should not be treated as a current restaurant count. Its broader point—that online ordering convenience does not inherently require a separate app for every merchant—can be considered without relying on that dated, unverified figure.

The phrase “Nobody Wants Your Damn App” captures the irritation of being pushed toward an installation when a working website would do. It is not a measured claim about what all users want: no reliable, named, current user-research statistic on responses to app-install prompts is established here. The practical conclusion is narrower: make the app’s extra value clear, offer it without blocking the website, and let the visitor choose.
