If images are blank or broken in Safari, first reload the page and check whether the problem affects one website or several. That quick scope check helps separate a site-specific fault from a Safari setting or a network problem. Then test reversible fixes—such as temporarily turning off an extension—before clearing cookies or website data, which can sign you out or remove saved site state.
First find out whether it is one website, Safari, or the network
A missing image does not automatically mean the image file is gone. A page may load its images through scripts, a content blocker may prevent a request, stored site data may be stale, or a network privacy tool may interfere. Apple’s support guidance covers general website-loading problems, so these checks are possible fixes—not proof of a particular cause for every image failure.
- Reload the page. If the image appears, the failure may have been temporary.
- Open another website in Safari and see whether its images load.
- If possible, try the affected site in another browser or on another device.
- Try the same device on a different network. On iPhone or iPad, that may mean switching between Wi-Fi and cellular data.
| What you find | What it suggests | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Only one site is affected | A site-specific setting, stored data, compatibility problem, or fault at that site is more likely than a general Safari problem. | Check that site’s content-blocker setting; on Mac, also try a private window. |
| Several sites fail only in Safari | A Safari setting, extension, or stored website data may be involved. | Test extensions and content blockers, then check JavaScript and updates. |
| Several browsers or devices fail on the same network | The network environment or the affected website may be responsible. | Try another network and review VPN, proxy, DNS, or security software settings. |
Apple Support recommends comparing networks on iPhone and iPad, and comparing browsers, devices, or networks on Mac. If the same failure follows the network across devices and browsers, look beyond Safari.
Fix missing images on iPhone or iPad
Menu names can vary by iOS or iPadOS version. Apple’s iPhone and iPad troubleshooting sequence addresses Safari pages that fail to load; apply it to missing images as a diagnostic sequence rather than assuming every step is necessary.

1. Try another connection and review VPN
Switch to another available network, or try cellular data instead of Wi-Fi. If the site works on the other connection, investigate the original network or its privacy tools. Apple Support notes: “If you have a VPN turned on, some apps or websites might block content from loading.” Temporarily testing with the VPN off can help isolate the cause; restore your usual protection after the test.
2. Restart the device
Restart your iPhone or iPad, reopen Safari, and reload the page. This is a low-impact check before changing saved data or privacy settings.
3. Check JavaScript
Some websites use JavaScript to insert or load images. Check Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced and make sure JavaScript is enabled if the affected site depends on it. If the setting was already enabled, changing it is unlikely to help.

4. Consider clearing history and website data only after simpler tests
Apple’s general iPhone and iPad option is Clear History and Website Data in Safari settings. Clearing website data can remove cookies and other saved site state, and may sign you out. Use it when a site continues to fail after reload, network, and restart checks—not as the first response to one missing image. Apple’s article “Delete your Safari history, cache and cookies on iPhone” also notes that cookies can affect how sites work.

If only one website is affected and the other checks do not help, check whether iCloud Private Relay is enabled. Apple lists Private Relay among the settings to investigate for a site-specific Safari loading problem. Change it only as a temporary diagnostic if appropriate, then restore your preferred privacy settings.
If images remain missing on a single site after these checks, contact the website’s developer or support team. They can determine whether the image URL, server, or page code is failing.

Fix missing images on Mac
On Mac, begin with the least disruptive checks. Apple Support’s article “If Safari doesn’t work as expected on Mac” says, “The web page may not be compatible with one or more browser settings, which you can turn on or off as needed.” The steps below help identify which settings might be involved.
1. Reload, update, and restart
Reload the page. Install available macOS and Safari updates, then restart the Mac and try again. Apple says Safari 26 is included with the latest updates for macOS Sequoia 15 or later; availability depends on the installed software, so check the version on your Mac rather than assuming it has Safari 26.

Turn off Safari extensions temporarily and reload the affected page. If images return, re-enable extensions one at a time until the behavior changes; that can identify a conflict. Re-enable extensions you need after testing. Avoid leaving security or privacy extensions disabled as a permanent workaround without understanding the trade-off.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
3. Check content blockers for the affected site
Content blockers can block images and other resources. In Safari, open the affected site and use Safari > Settings for [website] (the site-specific settings panel) to inspect its Content Blockers setting. Turn blockers off for that site as a test, then reload. If this fixes the page, prefer adjusting the affected site’s setting rather than disabling a blocker everywhere. Re-enable it if the test makes no difference.
4. Try a private window, then remove only the site’s data if it works
Open a private window and visit the same page. If images load there but not in a regular window, stored data for that site may be involved. Remove the affected website’s data, including its cache and cookies, then reload in a regular window. This may sign you out or discard saved preferences for that site, which is why it belongs after the private-window test rather than at the top of the checklist.
5. Review JavaScript and other Safari settings
Check that JavaScript is enabled if the site relies on scripts to display images. Also review Safari’s Privacy, Security, Websites, and Advanced settings for changes that could affect the site. If you recently changed a setting, temporarily restoring its prior value is a useful test. Avoid switching off several protections at once: changing one setting at a time makes the result easier to interpret.

6. Check network privacy and security tools
If the problem occurs on several sites, or across browsers on the same network, test a different network. Review VPN and security software, custom proxy settings, and custom DNS settings. If only one site is affected, also check whether Private Relay is involved. Restore any protection or custom network setting after a temporary test that does not explain the problem.
7. Report or escalate a persistent site-specific failure
If one site still fails, contact its developer. Apple says Safari 26 or later adds Report a Website Issue after reloading. Safari 26’s availability depends on the Mac’s installed updates; if you do not see that option, use the site’s own support channel.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose the next step by the failure pattern
- One site, one device: reload; on Mac, test a private window and the site’s content-blocker setting; check site data and Private Relay. If the issue persists, report it to the site.
- Several sites, one Safari installation: test extensions and content blockers, confirm JavaScript, review website data, and update and restart.
- Several devices or browsers on one network: test another network and review VPN, proxy, DNS, and security software. Apple’s Mac guidance says a problem that affects other devices and browsers on the same network is probably with the website or network environment.
These patterns narrow the search; they do not identify a cause on their own. For example, a page working in a private window points toward regular-window site data or settings, but does not prove which item is responsible.
Common mistakes and what to do instead
- Clearing all browsing data first: this can remove sign-ins and saved site state. Try reloading and isolating the scope first; on Mac, use a private window to test whether regular-window data matters.
- Disabling every privacy feature at once: if the page starts working, you will not know which change mattered. Test one extension, blocker, VPN, or setting at a time, and restore it when it is not the cause.
- Assuming the image file itself is broken: if other sites work, browser settings or site-specific behavior may be involved; if multiple devices fail on one network, investigate the network or site.
- Leaving protections off after a test: temporary diagnostic changes are not necessarily safe permanent fixes. Re-enable extensions, blockers, VPNs, or other protections unless you have a specific reason to keep a site-level exception.
- Installing a cleaner or replacing hardware: Apple’s troubleshooting steps focus on browser settings, stored data, software updates, and network checks. A paid utility or device replacement is not established as a necessary fix for missing Safari images.
Or skip the browser setup
If you are a developer who needs a screenshot of a page to inspect or share—not a fix to Safari on your own device—ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF through one GET request. A server-side capture is not a Safari repair and does not prove that a visitor’s browser will load the same page. Its clean-shot options accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and whether it was billed. It also has an MCP server for AI agents, with tools including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
