An Open Graph image is preview metadata that social networks retrieve when someone shares a link; it is not necessarily the image displayed in the page itself. Webflow describes it as information used to populate link previews (Webflow Open Graph settings).
What an Open Graph image does in Webflow
Open Graph metadata tells a social platform what title, description, and image to use when a URL is shared. A page can display an image perfectly in a browser while its link preview is missing or stale, because the platform reads the page’s metadata and may keep a cached copy.
Webflow’s Help Center says, “You can specify the information shared in your site’s link previews with Open Graph settings.” Those settings are page-specific, not a single site-wide image setting. Updating a page’s visible content or clearing your own browser cache does not by itself update a social platform’s stored preview.
Fix the page metadata and image first
1. Open the settings for the exact page
- In Webflow, open the Pages panel.
- Open Page settings for the exact URL being shared.
- Go to Open Graph settings and check that the intended Open Graph image is selected. Review the title and description there as well if those preview details are wrong.
Do not assume that changing a homepage or another page’s settings updates the URL in question: Webflow’s Open Graph values are set per page.

2. Check that the image is supported and publicly reachable
For the most reliable troubleshooting, choose a JPG or PNG in Webflow’s asset picker. Webflow’s Open Graph guidance notes that WebP support varies by social platform; its Assets documentation says AVIF and WebP are not supported as Open Graph images and recommends not compressing an asset linked as an OG image. A JPG or PNG is the conservative choice across that guidance (Open Graph settings; Assets panel overview).
You can select an uploaded asset or use Add URL to enter a public image URL. Webflow says assets uploaded through the Assets panel and Collection assets are publicly available and delivered over its CDN (Assets panel overview). If using a URL, open that final URL in a private browser window or another environment without your logged-in session. It should load the image itself, not a login page, error page, or redirect to a page that requires access.
3. Check dimensions and consistency
Webflow relays Facebook’s recommendation that an Open Graph image be at least 1080 pixels wide. That is a recommendation, not a guarantee that the image will appear: metadata, access, format, publishing, and platform caching still matter. Use a suitably sized image and avoid changing dimensions unpredictably between pages. For Collection pages, Webflow specifically says Open Graph images in the Collection should have the same dimensions.

As an advanced option, Webflow says you can add the image’s actual width and height as Open Graph metadata in the site head or page head. This can help a crawler render the image without asynchronously downloading and processing it. Use this only if you are comfortable editing head code, and make sure the values match the image’s real dimensions (Webflow Open Graph settings).
4. Save and publish
Save the page settings and publish the site. Test the live URL, not only a Designer preview: social crawlers need to retrieve the published page and image. If the page is still unpublished, or the change has not reached the live domain, a scraper can continue to see the previous metadata.
Refresh the preview on the social platform
Once the live page is correct, use the platform’s own inspection or refresh mechanism. Each service handles previews separately, so refreshing one destination does not necessarily refresh another.

These platform-specific steps are described in Webflow’s Open Graph troubleshooting guide. A browser refresh or clearing local browser data is not a substitute for asking the social platform to fetch the URL again.
Check CMS Collection pages separately
A Collection template can use dynamic content, so verify both the template mapping and the individual item:
- In the Collection template’s Open Graph image control, select the intended Image field.
- Confirm the Collection actually has an Image field and the specific item has an image populated. Webflow cannot set an OG image from a Collection if there is no Image field to select.
- Keep the Open Graph images in that Collection at the same dimensions.
- Publish the site, then inspect the live URL for the specific Collection item—not just the template or another item.

Check localization for the URL’s locale
If the shared link is in a secondary locale, inspect that locale’s own Open Graph settings. Webflow says localized Open Graph settings can be edited independently, so the primary-language page may be correct while the localized URL has a missing or different image. Localize feature availability can depend on the plan; see Webflow’s Localize overview.

Will changing the visible image on the page update its social preview?
Not necessarily. The preview uses Open Graph metadata, which you should check separately in that page’s settings.
Does X Card Validator still show the card image?
No. Use the validator’s debugging log, then preview the card by pasting the URL into an X post composer.
