Batgirl was not released after Warner Bros. abandoned its planned HBO Max debut in August 2022. The Los Angeles Times reported an estimated production cost of $90 million, but the available reporting does not show that the film was worth more to the studio shelved than released—or that it can never be made available.
What was Batgirl, and how much did it cost?
Batgirl was a Warner Bros. DC feature starring Leslie Grace, originally planned for HBO Max. The Los Angeles Times reported an estimated production cost of $90 million in 2022; Guinness World Records also lists a $90 million budget. These are reported figures, not an independently audited final cost. Los Angeles Times · Guinness World Records
Guinness records filming as having wrapped on March 31, 2022. That milestone means principal photography was over; it does not mean the movie was fully finished. Contemporary coverage described it as nearly finished and still in post-production.
Why did Warner Bros. shelve it?
In August 2022, Warner Bros. decided not to release Batgirl on HBO Max or in theaters. The Los Angeles Times reported that the studio did not want to spend additional money on a theatrical campaign for the nearly finished film. CBS News also reported that there would be no streaming debut or theatrical release. CBS News
#1 Best Overall
Contemporary reporting placed the decision amid changes in Warner Bros. leadership and a shift in release strategy toward theatrical movies. TheWrap, citing a company insider, also reported that the studio expected tax treatment from not releasing Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt. That account offers context, not a complete official explanation of how the studio weighed each factor. TheWrap
What a reported tax write-off does—and does not—mean
A tax deduction generally reduces taxable income; it is not automatically a dollar-for-dollar reimbursement of a film’s production cost. The cited reporting does not establish the precise deduction or tax benefit for Batgirl. It therefore cannot support the claim that Warner Bros. recovered $90 million, or prove that shelving the film was financially better than releasing it.

Was the movie really finished?
No, not in the sense of being a completed film ready for viewers. Filming had wrapped, but reporting at the time said the movie remained in post-production. Warner Bros. announced on August 3, 2022 that it would not complete or release it, according to Guinness World Records. The distinction matters: a movie can have completed principal photography while still requiring post-production work and, if it is to be released, further spending.
Will Batgirl ever be released?
The Associated Press reported on March 31, 2025 that Batgirl remained unreleased. That is the latest status established by the cited coverage, not proof that the film can never become available. The same AP report noted that Coyote vs. Acme, another title Warner Bros. had shelved, found a distributor, while Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt were still unreleased at that time. Another film’s later path does not predict what will happen to Batgirl. Associated Press
