Venmo may ask for your Social Security number (SSN) to verify your identity, enable access to a Venmo balance, or support certain transfer limits and account roles. A separate request may concern tax reporting for goods-and-services payments. The exact reason depends on the prompt and your account activity, so check it inside the Venmo app rather than responding to an unexpected text or email.

Why Venmo asks for an SSN

Venmo describes itself as a money-transfer business regulated by the U.S. Treasury Department and says it collects identity information to verify users. Verification may be required to access a Venmo balance or may affect what account features are available. Venmo also lists several activity-based situations that can prompt verification; these are Venmo’s stated triggers, not a complete determination of what applies to every account.

  • Sending $300 or more within a rolling seven-day period.
  • Transferring $1,000 or more to a bank within a rolling seven-day period.
  • Creating an organization account.
  • Processing more than 200 transactions in a calendar year as a sole proprietor with a business profile.
  • Receiving goods-and-services payments or becoming an organization-account manager.

These account-verification prompts are different from tax-information requests, even though both may involve an SSN or other tax identification number.

Identity verification versus tax information

Type of request What it concerns What may happen if information is missing
Identity verification Confirming who you are, including in situations involving balance access, specified activity, or account roles. Some account features or limits may be unavailable.
Tax information Tax reporting for applicable goods-and-services payments. When a relevant reporting threshold is reached and tax ID information is missing, incorrect, or unverified, Venmo says tax holds and 24% backup withholding may apply.

Venmo says friends-and-family transfers are outside this particular Form 1099-K reporting treatment unless a payment is identified as a purchase. That distinction concerns this reporting context; it does not establish whether a separate identity-verification request is required.

Venmo’s 2025 federal reporting threshold

For tax year 2025, Venmo describes the federal Form 1099-K threshold as more than $20,000 and more than 200 separate goods-and-services transactions. This is a tax-year-specific threshold, not a permanent rule, and Venmo notes that some states have lower thresholds. Check current federal and state guidance for the tax year in question; the threshold alone does not determine every user’s tax obligations.

How to check and complete identity verification safely

  1. Open the Venmo mobile app yourself; do not follow a link in an unexpected message.
  2. Go to Me > Settings > Identity Verification. Venmo says this workflow is available in its mobile app, not on its website.
  3. Review the request and the information shown. If the name or other details are wrong, contact Venmo support through the app rather than submitting inaccurate information.
  4. Submit documents only through a channel Venmo identifies as secure. Venmo names in-app forms, in-app chat, and a secure document-upload form as document channels.

Venmo says it does not request identity documents directly by text message or email. Its security guidance also says nobody at Venmo will contact you to request your account password or verification code. A message claiming to be from Venmo is not proof that the request is legitimate; authenticate the specific prompt by opening the app independently.

If you do not have an SSN or ITIN

Venmo says users without an SSN or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) cannot complete identity verification, but may continue using the service without verification with some limitations. For your account’s available options, ask Venmo support through the app. Do not invent information or send sensitive documents to an address or link you have not verified.
