Use Selenium Grid when you need browser tests to run remotely, in parallel, or across a matrix of browsers, browser versions, and operating systems. It can shorten feedback time and broaden coverage, but only when your tests can run concurrently and you provide enough matching browser capacity. For a small suite that runs quickly on one machine, operating Grid may not be worthwhile.
What Selenium Grid does
Selenium Grid routes WebDriver commands to browser sessions running on remote machines. Instead of executing every test on one local browser, you can configure remote machines with the browsers and operating systems your tests require, then let Grid assign sessions to available capacity. Selenium describes its primary use cases as parallel execution across machines and testing against different browser types, versions, and operating systems (Selenium Grid documentation; When to Use Grid).
Grid is useful when reduced suite time or wider environment coverage matters enough to justify running and securing remote browser infrastructure. It is not a speed switch: concurrency, available slots, resource contention, test dependencies, and session startup all affect the result.
When Grid is worth using
Shorter feedback loops
If your suite contains independent tests, multiple browser sessions can work at the same time. That can reduce elapsed time and help developers get results sooner. The potential gain depends on how much of the suite can actually run concurrently and how much capacity is available.

Browser and operating-system coverage
Grid can schedule sessions to configured browser environments, including multiple instances of the same browser or a mixed browser matrix. It cannot provide an environment that is not configured on an available Node with a suitable slot.
When to stay local
If your suite is short, runs adequately on one local browser, and does not need remote execution or a meaningful browser/OS matrix, Grid may add operational work without enough benefit. This is a practical trade-off, not an official threshold. First identify whether execution time, browser coverage, or another bottleneck is the problem.
How a test session moves through Grid
A WebDriver client requests a session with capabilities describing the browser environment it needs. Grid then routes the request to an available matching browser slot:

- Router: receives client requests and routes them to the appropriate Grid component.
- New Session Queue: holds incoming session requests while they wait for assignment.
- Distributor: checks available locations, called slots, and assigns a request to a matching slot.
- Node: runs the WebDriver browser session. A Node can provide one or more slots.
- Session Map: records which Node owns each active session.
- Event Bus: carries asynchronous messages between Grid components.
Once the session starts, later WebDriver commands are routed to the Node running that session. If no configured slot matches the requested capabilities, Grid cannot satisfy the request until a suitable slot becomes available or the environment is changed. See Selenium’s Grid architecture documentation for component details.

For example, Selenium’s applicability page calculates 15 tests averaging 45 seconds as 11 minutes 15 seconds on one node, 2 minutes 15 seconds on five nodes, or 45 seconds on 15 nodes. It also illustrates 100 tests averaging 120 seconds as 13 minutes 20 seconds on 15 nodes, compared with more than three hours on one node. These are arithmetic examples, not measured benchmark results or speed guarantees; the page does not state a publication year (Selenium: When to Use Grid).
Actual runs can take longer than the idealized estimate because of queueing, session startup, scheduling overhead, resource contention, and dependencies between tests. Use the formula to reason about a possible ceiling, then measure your own suite and deployment.
Choose a deployment shape that fits your operations
| Approach | What it means | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Local WebDriver | Tests run against a browser on the test-running machine, without a remote Grid. | A short or modest suite with no strong need for remote execution or a broad environment matrix. |
| Standalone Grid | A single server provides the simplest way to start using Grid. | Learning Grid or beginning with a compact remote setup. |
| Hub and Nodes | A hub coordinates requests and Nodes provide browser sessions. | A team that needs multiple configured browser environments or parallel slots. |
| Distributed Grid | Grid components run separately, ideally on different machines; Selenium identifies Docker as a useful tool for this approach. | A deployment that needs more separation or capacity and can support the added operations. |
Selenium documents standalone, hub/Node, and distributed setups in its Getting started with Selenium Grid guide. A managed remote-browser service is another category teams may evaluate if they do not want to operate Grid themselves; compare its supported environments, controls, and terms against your requirements.

Size capacity from observed workload
Selenium offers one CPU and 1 GB of RAM per browser as a reference, but warns that it may not fit every context. Its broad Grid size bands are rough estimates, not hard capacity limits. Treat resource needs as something to establish by measurement rather than as a universal formula.
- List the browsers, browser versions, operating systems, and simultaneous sessions your suite needs.
- Start with a small deployment that provides those environments and run representative tests.
- Observe elapsed suite time, time spent waiting for sessions, session duration, and machine resource use.
- Add or adjust Nodes and slots based on observed bottlenecks, then measure again.
More slots do not necessarily produce proportionally faster runs if tests are sequential, machines are resource constrained, or sessions compete for CPU and memory.

Selenium explicitly warns that Grid should not be exposed to external access and calls for appropriate firewall permissions. An exposed Grid can give third parties access to its infrastructure, internal web applications or files, and the ability to run custom binaries (Selenium Grid: Getting started).

Or skip the browser setup
If your task is to capture website screenshots rather than run WebDriver test workflows, ScreenshotNeo is a separate screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; it is not a replacement for Selenium Grid’s browser-test orchestration.
For example, this cURL request captures a page to WebP; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Quick Recap
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
