When an X (formerly Twitter) link preview has no image, a tiny thumbnail, or an old image, the cause is usually in the HTML that X can fetch—not in the post composer. Inspect the exact page source served to an unauthenticated visitor, verify the card type and image URL, remove conflicting tags, and make sure your server allows a crawler to retrieve the image. Then account for platform caching before judging the fix.
Start with the four checks that find most failures
- Inspect the served HTML. Open the exact URL people share, view its source (or the rendered document head), and search for
twitter:card,twitter:image,twitter:title,twitter:description, and the Open Graph equivalents. A value in a CMS panel is irrelevant if a theme, cache, or SEO plugin emits different HTML. - Confirm the requested layout.
summaryasks for a compact card;summary_large_imageasks for the prominent-image layout. A small thumbnail can therefore be expected behavior rather than a missing image. - Fetch the image from outside your login. The image URL must be absolute (for example,
https://example.com/images/card.webp) and retrievable without authentication. Test it from a private browser window or another network and check that it returns an image response rather than a login page, redirect loop, firewall challenge, or 404. - Check crawler access. Review robots rules, WAF settings, hotlink protection, geo restrictions, and rate limits. A browser session that works for you does not prove that a social crawler can download the file.

How X card metadata controls the preview
The card type chooses the visual treatment
Place one deliberate card declaration in the page head:

There is no Open Graph tag that performs this layout selection, so adding only og:image cannot turn a small card into a large one.

The image and text tags supply content

Look for duplicate or conflicting tags
WordPress themes, SEO plugins, edge-side rendering, and cached templates can each add metadata. If two twitter:image tags or two card types appear, behavior may depend on which one the crawler reads. Fix the generator that produces the unwanted tag, purge the relevant page/CDN cache, and leave one authoritative set.
Why the image URL is ignored
Relative, private, or blocked URLs
A path such as /uploads/card.jpg is not a complete social-media image reference. Use an absolute HTTPS URL. The URL must work without a session cookie, Basic Auth, signed link that has expired, or an internal DNS name. Confirm that redirects end at the image itself and do not require JavaScript.

Response and content problems
Request the image with a command-line client or an HTTP inspector and verify a successful status and an image content type. A CDN may return an HTML bot-check page with status 200; that still is not a usable image. Check that the file is not zero bytes, corrupted, or replaced by an application error. If your firewall allows ordinary browsers but challenges unknown user agents or data-center IPs, create a narrowly scoped rule that permits legitimate crawler retrieval.
Dimensions, format, and file size
og-image.org recommends 1200 × 630 pixels for a large-image card and discusses format and size limits. Treat those figures as that guide’s practical recommendation, not as a confirmed, universal current X specification. Use a properly encoded JPEG, PNG, or WebP at a sensible size, and avoid an image so large that the request times out. Keep important text away from edges because different card renderings can crop it.
A repeatable fix workflow
- Use the canonical shared URL. Do not test a staging URL, an authenticated preview, or a URL whose query parameters people will not share.
- Inspect unauthenticated output. View source, not just a CMS form. Record every Twitter and Open Graph tag in the final head.
- Choose one layout. Set
summary_large_imagefor a prominent image orsummaryfor a compact card. - Replace the image reference. Point
twitter:image(and normallyog:image) at one absolute HTTPS image URL. - Test retrieval externally. Verify status, content type, redirects, permissions, and that the response is the image rather than a challenge or login page.
- Remove conflicts and purge caches. Correct the theme/plugin/template that emits stale tags, then clear page and CDN caches.
- Test the current page output in X. If the composer offers a preview, use it while composing. The availability and behavior of X’s former Card Validator are not assumed here.
- Allow for an already-cached preview. A post that was shared before the fix can continue showing old data for a while. Do not promise an exact refresh time or rely on changing the URL as a guaranteed purge method; first prove that the live HTML and image are correct.

In the plugin’s social-sharing settings, select the desired card type and image, then inspect the published page source. Performance, reliability, and operational notes
- Serve the image from infrastructure that can handle crawler requests without requiring client-side JavaScript.
- Keep redirects short and deterministic; every extra hop increases the chance of a timeout or policy failure.
- Use cache-control and CDN settings that let the image remain available, but purge cached HTML when metadata changes.
- Monitor image URLs after migrations, domain changes, and storage-bucket permission changes. A card can break months after publication when an asset path is removed.
- Do not infer a successful browser load from a successful crawler load. Compare unauthenticated requests and inspect the actual response body.

Does changing only the image filename force X to refresh a card?
It may change what a fetcher requests, but current cache behavior and refresh guarantees are not established here. Treat URL variation as a diagnostic experiment, not a guaranteed purge technique.
Can Open Graph tags replace Twitter tags?
They may supply fallback title, description, or image data in some implementations, but they do not select the card layout. Keep an explicit twitter:card.
Should I follow X’s advertising website-tag guide for organic posts?
No. The official X Business resource for troubleshooting is scoped to advertising website tags. Do not treat it as a complete specification for organic link previews.
