Turn-based tactics games should let players undo at least some actions—but not necessarily erase every consequence. A good rewind catches misclicks and lets players understand interacting rules, while clear limits preserve the weight of strategic choices. The key design question is what can be reversed, and when.
Why an undo button fits tactical play
Tactics games ask players to reason about multiple units, objectives, rules and consequences at once. A mistaken click can obscure whether a plan was bad or the input was wrong; a newly understood interaction can make an irreversible outcome feel like a tax on learning rather than a meaningful decision.
Undo can separate those cases. Reversing a move before an attack lets a player correct execution or reconsider positioning. Reversing an attack after its outcome is known is a broader intervention: it can turn a consequential choice into a trial run. That distinction is a design judgment, not a measured universal rule.
What Into the Breach gets right
In a February 23, 2018 interview with Game Developer, Subset Games co-founder Justin Ma said, “We wanted to make something where every death felt like your own fault.” One way the game supports that goal is by showing enemy intentions before the player acts. The threats are legible enough for players to plan around them.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The game’s undo is deliberately bounded. Its guide says mech movement can be undone repeatedly, but movement undo closes once an attack begins. That creates a clear decision boundary: repositioning remains adjustable, while an attack commits the player to its result.
Objectives also make the decisions richer than simply eliminating enemies. Ma said, “When you have varied goals and priorities rather than just ‘kill the enemies’, you get interesting choices.” Buildings and collateral damage can matter alongside mech survival, including situations where the player must choose whether to risk a mech to protect the city. Undo can help players understand those competing priorities, but it should not automatically remove every hard trade-off.

Undo designs should differ by scope and timing
There is no single rewind rule that fits every tactics game. PC Gamer’s discussion of strategy-game undo describes Old World as allowing immediate rollback of every action without consequences, while citing Panzer Corps 2 and Invisible, Inc. as examples with different constraints. These examples show a range of approaches; they do not establish which one players prefer or which is best for every game.
| Design question | What the system must decide |
|---|---|
| Scope | Can the player reverse movement only, one action, or every action? |
| Timing | Does undo remain available before attacks, after attacks, or after a turn resolves? |
| Limit | Is rewind unlimited, available once per turn, or gated by a limited resource? |
| Randomness and information | Does undo preserve a random outcome, reroll it, or retain information revealed by the action? |
| What it reverses | Does it correct an input mistake, undo a tactical result, or erase a strategic commitment? |
The examples establish that games handle scope and limits differently, but do not settle a universal answer for randomness or newly revealed information. Those rules should be explicit: if a player can undo a shot and fire again, for example, the game needs to decide whether that grants another chance at a random result or merely restores the prior state.

Where rewind should stop
A strong default is to make routine execution reversible while keeping consequential commitments consequential. Let players undo movement before an attack, correct a misclick, and inspect how a plan changes. Consider closing the undo window when an attack begins or a turn resolves, unless the game’s core design is specifically built around broader experimentation.
Random outcomes need particular care. If undo rerolls a chance-based attack, players may be able to fish for a favorable result; if it restores the same result, the feature can correct inputs without changing probability. Either approach can work, but players should know which one applies. PC Gamer raises the random-shot case as a specific challenge for undo design; it does not establish a universal solution.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Boundaries also protect strategic stakes. If every consequence can be rolled back, a player may test every option and keep only the best result. A limited rewind, a movement-only undo, or a clear lock after attacks can preserve room to learn without making all choices provisional. These are design trade-offs, not demonstrated effects on player behavior.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical standard for tactics games
- Make enemy threats and relevant rules readable before the player commits, as Into the Breach does with telegraphed attacks.
- Allow at least one useful correction window for movement or accidental input.
- State exactly when that window closes—such as when an attack starts or a turn resolves.
- Explain whether undo preserves random outcomes and information revealed by an action.
- Reserve irreversible moments for choices the game intends players to own, rather than ordinary interface mistakes.
This is not an argument that every tactics game should offer unlimited rewind. It is an argument for treating undo as part of the rules: a clearly bounded tool that helps players act on what they understand while leaving meaningful commitments intact.
