President Donald Trump said he felt sorry for the people New York Attorney General Letitia James investigates because, in his view, they “won’t get a fair shake.” He was criticizing reports that Gov. Kathy Hochul had assigned James to lead or oversee an investigation into sexual-assault allegations involving seven men and a Cornell fraternity. Trump’s claim is his opinion; the reporting does not independently establish that James is biased or that the accused would be treated unfairly.
What did Trump say about the Cornell investigation?
In remarks reported from the White House on October 2, 2026, Trump criticized James’s role in the investigation and described her as corrupt. Hindustan Times quoted him as saying, “I feel bad for whoever she’s looking at because they won’t get a fair shake.” Hindustan Times and an AOL report recount the remarks; AOL says they came in response to a question from Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy.
The statement explains the headline: Trump said he expected people James investigated not to receive fair treatment. It does not establish that he endorsed the men, knew the evidence in the case, or had independently verified grounds for his accusation against James.

News accounts reported that Hochul assigned James to lead or oversee an investigation into sexual-assault allegations connected to a Cornell fraternity. The Independent described James as appointed to lead the investigation, while the available accounts do not establish the precise terms of her assignment or the legal instrument behind it. - Officially licensed Cornell University apparel hoodie sweatshirt
- Soft cotton and polyester blend construction provides comfort and durability
- Kangaroo pocket and hood add convenience and style
- Perfect Big Red fan gift for Christmas or graduation
The reporting reviewed does not independently substantiate Trump’s claim that James would be unfair. Nor does it provide a complete official account of her mandate. Those are separate questions: reports describe an assignment, while Trump offered a political criticism of the person assigned.
What does “Cornell 7” mean, and what is known about the allegations?
“Cornell 7” is a media shorthand for the seven men connected in news coverage to sexual-assault allegations involving a Cornell fraternity. It is not an official case name established by the reporting reviewed. The allegations should not be treated as findings of guilt: the reports do not establish whether charges have been filed, identify the accused, or determine what happened.

Hochul’s stated aim was reported by BizPac Review as ensuring that “every fact will be examined and justice pursued.” That outlet is a partisan commentary/news site, so this account should not be mistaken for a verified primary transcript of the governor’s statement. BizPac Review

What is established—and what remains unclear?
- Established by the cited news accounts: Trump criticized James after reports that she was assigned to the Cornell-related investigation, and he said people she investigated would not get a fair shake.
- Not established by those accounts: that James is biased, that any of the seven men committed an offense, whether charges have been filed, or the precise scope and formal basis of James’s assignment.
The October 2 exchange is described in news reports rather than supported here by a direct transcript or official video. The available reporting therefore supports attributing the quoted words to Trump as reported, not presenting them as independently authenticated from a recording.
