The MacBook Air M1 can still be a sensible laptop to keep in 2026 if it runs your everyday apps well, its battery lasts long enough for your routine, and its display, memory, storage, and ports meet your needs. Apple’s current macOS Tahoe 26 compatibility list includes the M1 Air, but that confirms compatibility with this release—not how long future updates will continue.
Apple announced the model on November 10, 2020, so it is approaching six years old as of October 2026, rather than having completed six full years since announcement. Its age alone does not show that an upgrade is necessary; the deciding factor is whether it has stopped meeting your requirements.
What the M1 MacBook Air still offers
Apple’s specifications for the MacBook Air (M1, 2020) list an Apple M1 chip, a 13.3-inch LED-backlit IPS display with a native resolution of 2560 by 1600 pixels at 227 pixels per inch, and two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports. Those features can remain practical for many ordinary computing needs, but specifications by themselves cannot establish how well the laptop handles your particular apps or workload. Apple’s technical specifications describe the hardware.

Those are manufacturer figures measured under defined test conditions; they are not a prediction of runtime from a battery that has aged for years. Actual battery life varies.

- Retina display; 13.3-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit display with IPS technology (2560x1600 native resolution)
- Apple M1 chip with 8 cores (4 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores), a 7-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine
- 8GB memory | 128GB SSD
- Backlit Magic Keyboard | Touch ID sensor | 720p FaceTime HD camera
- 802.11ax Wi-Fi 6 wireless networking, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac compatible | Bluetooth 5.0 wireless technology
Is the M1 MacBook Air still good in 2026?
For an individual owner, “still good” means that the laptop remains responsive in the apps they rely on, has enough memory and storage for their work, stays usable on battery for the required stretches, and connects to the devices they need. Check those needs against what the machine actually does today instead of treating its age or a published specification as a verdict.
Software compatibility is another concrete check. Apple’s macOS Tahoe 26 compatibility list, current as accessed October 7, 2026, includes MacBook Air (M1, 2020). Inclusion supports using it with that listed release; Apple’s page does not promise a future support end date.

Check the battery before deciding
A laptop can still perform adequately while its battery has become the main source of frustration. Apple lists a maximum cycle count of 1,000 for the M1 MacBook Air and says a battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at its maximum cycle count under normal conditions. These are battery guidance figures, not a guarantee that a particular battery will last a particular number of hours. Apple’s cycle-count guidance explains the limit and how to inspect it.
Find the cycle count
- Hold the Option key while opening the Apple menu.
- Select System Information.
- In the sidebar, open Hardware > Power, then find Battery Information and the cycle count.
Use the cycle count as one diagnostic, not an automatic instruction to replace the laptop. Compare it with the reported battery condition and the unplugged runtime you actually get.

Interpret battery health and service messages
Apple says battery health management on Apple silicon Macs monitors temperature history and charging patterns, and may temporarily limit maximum charging to reduce chemical aging. A battery that does not charge to 100% on a particular occasion is therefore not, by itself, proof of a fault.
If macOS reports “Service Recommended,” Apple says the battery’s ability to hold charge is reduced or the battery is not functioning normally. If the computer otherwise meets your needs, Apple says out-of-warranty battery service is available for a charge. Check local service options and pricing; the cost and availability are not established by Apple’s general guidance. See Apple’s battery health management explanation and what “Service Recommended” means.

When keeping it makes sense—and when it does not
| What to assess | Keeping the M1 Air is more plausible when… | An upgrade is more plausible when… |
|---|---|---|
| Apps and workload | Your usual apps remain responsive and complete the work you need. | Important tasks have become too slow or your required apps no longer support your setup. |
| Battery | Its real unplugged runtime fits your routine, regardless of age alone. | The runtime regularly falls short and service is not a worthwhile solution for you. |
| Capacity | Memory and storage are sufficient for your files and active work. | You repeatedly run out of storage or your workload needs more capacity than this machine provides. |
| Connections and display | The built-in display and two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports cover your setup. | You need display or device connections your current arrangement cannot provide conveniently. |
| Software support | The macOS release and apps you need work on the machine. | A required release, app, or feature is unavailable on it. |
A port shortfall may be solvable with a compatible USB-C hub or adapter rather than a new computer. Verify the accessory’s compatibility and display support for your exact setup; many owners will not need one. Replacing a laptop makes more sense when the missing capability is fundamental, not merely because a connector is inconvenient.

What Apple’s launch claims do—and do not—show
When Apple introduced the M1, senior vice president of Hardware Technologies Johny Srouji called it “by far the most powerful chip we’ve ever created.” That was Apple’s launch-era characterization in 2020, not an independent benchmark against laptops available in 2026. Apple’s specifications and present-day compatibility listing establish what the machine is and which listed macOS release supports it; they cannot substitute for checking your own workload.

For an owner whose apps, battery, capacity, and connections still fit, continuing to use the M1 Air is a reasoned choice. If one specific shortfall is driving the decision, check whether service or an accessory can address it before replacing the entire laptop.
