Their input can help the team account for verification, dependencies, and quality expectations while it decides what it can complete and how. A tester from outside the Scrum Team may be invited when their advice would help; the Scrum Guide does not make every outside tester’s attendance mandatory.
What Sprint Planning is meant to decide
Sprint Planning initiates the Sprint. Scrum.org frames the discussion around three topics: why the Sprint is valuable, what can be done during the Sprint, and how the selected work will get done. The result is a Sprint Backlog comprising the Sprint Goal, selected Product Backlog items, and a plan for delivering them.
That makes planning relevant to more than choosing development tasks. The team is agreeing on a goal and considering the work required to deliver an Increment that meets its Definition of Done.
Should testers attend?
Testers who are Scrum Team members
Yes. Sprint Planning is collaborative Scrum Team work, and a tester who belongs to that team should participate with the rest of the team. The Scrum Guide includes verification among the product-related activities for which the Scrum Team is responsible. It does not define a separate tester accountability that makes verification solely the tester’s job.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Testers outside the Scrum Team
The team can invite an outside tester when their advice will help with planning. The official Scrum Guide says, “The Scrum Team may also invite other people to attend Sprint Planning to provide advice.” This permits an invitation; it does not require every external QA specialist or tester to attend every planning meeting.
What tester input can improve in the plan
Developers consider capacity and the Definition of Done when selecting Product Backlog items and planning the work needed to create an Increment that meets that Definition. Tester input can make the verification work and relevant constraints visible before the team settles on its plan.

- Clarify evidence: Ask what would demonstrate that an item meets its acceptance expectations and the Definition of Done.
- Make verification work visible: Identify the checks, data, environments, or integration work needed to verify the planned Increment.
- Surface dependencies early: Flag access to test environments, representative data, specialist advice, or other prerequisites that could affect feasibility.
- Discuss relevant quality risks: Where the work calls for it, raise accessibility, security, or other quality considerations while the team can still shape its plan.
- Keep the Sprint Goal in view: Help connect verification activities to the shared goal and the work needed to deliver the Sprint Backlog.
These are practical prompts for applying Sprint Planning’s purpose and the Definition of Done, not a prescribed Scrum checklist. The specific checks depend on the product and the work selected.
How to contribute without turning planning into a QA handoff
- Start with the item and its expected outcome. Ask questions that clarify what the team intends to deliver, rather than treating testing as a separate phase after development.
- Identify verification and prerequisites. Make necessary checks, data, environments, and dependencies discussable while the team is considering capacity and feasibility.
- Help the team plan the work. Raise verification tasks as part of the delivery plan where they are needed to meet the Definition of Done.
- Share responsibility for quality. Offer testing expertise, but do not imply that quality belongs only to testers. Verification is among the Scrum Team’s product-related responsibilities.
