Telegram channel comments are replies in a linked discussion group—not messages stored inside the channel post. Telegram forwards each channel post to that group, where replies to the forwarded copy make up the post’s comment thread. The channel then displays that thread beneath the post.
Where Telegram post comments actually live
A channel post is the original broadcast. Telegram automatically forwards it to the channel’s linked discussion supergroup; replies to that forwarded message form the comments thread. Telegram’s API documentation describes the comment section as the message thread of that automatically forwarded post.
Telegram connects the two views: readers can open comments from the channel post, while the same conversation is visible in the discussion group. Telegram’s channel guide says comments appear in separate threads under posts and also in the discussion group.
Why a comment button may be missing
Check whether a discussion group is linked
A channel needs a linked discussion group to provide post comments. Telegram’s Channels FAQ identifies linking a discussion group as the prerequisite for subscribers to see a comment button on posts. Check the channel’s information/settings for its discussion-group connection.

Check the group’s join-to-send requirement
If the discussion group requires people to join before sending, that membership rule can prevent a user from commenting. Telegram’s join-to-send API method documents this control for discussion groups. Ask the channel admin to check the group’s setting if only some users are unable to comment.
If comments appear only in the group
That is generally expected: the group contains the forwarded channel post and its reply thread, and the channel presents that same thread as comments beneath the post. Telegram’s API distinguishes the linked discussion group from the channel post; for developers, it identifies the linked group through replies.channel_id and documents messages.getDiscussionMessage for retrieving the discussion messages.

People who comment but are not members of the discussion group may still receive replies. Telegram’s September 30, 2020 announcement says replies to their comments are delivered in a special chat called Replies.

A Telegram Bugs and Suggestions report dated July 14, 2024 described comments on posts with inline keyboards as available only through group membership, rather than displayed on the channel post. The official response indicated the behavior could change, so treat that report as a potentially outdated edge case—not a rule for all posts. If the issue affects just one post, try opening its discussion in the linked group and check whether the post uses an inline keyboard.
