Technical cleaning is a useful part of data-centre reliability because dust and other contamination can affect equipment and cooling. It is not an outage-prevention guarantee, and cleaning alone cannot solve contamination that keeps entering the room or is generated continuously. A sound approach links cleaning to source control, filtration, monitoring, and documented work procedures.

Why does data-centre cleaning matter?

Contamination control is part of operating reliable IT infrastructure. ASHRAE’s 2011 Gaseous and Particulate Contamination Guidelines for Data Centers says: “It is incumbent upon data center managers to do their part in maintaining hardware reliability by monitoring and controlling dust and gaseous contamination in their data centers.” The point is broader than appearances: contamination can threaten hardware reliability, while accumulated debris can impair cooling effectiveness.

Cleaning is one control in that system, not a stand-alone reliability measure. The evidence cited here does not establish a quantified reduction in failure rates from cleaning alone, or a guarantee against outages. The value comes from diagnosing what is present and choosing controls that address its source and risk.

What is technical cleaning?

Technical cleaning is cleaning planned for the conditions and sensitivities of an operating data centre, rather than ordinary janitorial work. A deep-cleaning scope may cover horizontal and vertical surfaces, plenum spaces, and subfloors—not just visible floors. The appropriate scope depends on site conditions, airflow, equipment, and the consequences of disturbing accumulated material.

Uptime Institute’s contractor-versus-DIY guidance distinguishes routine work from deeper cleaning and emphasizes equipment protection and site procedures. General cleaning should not involve opening chassis or removing fiber optics, and liquid should not be sprayed directly onto or into equipment. Follow manufacturer instructions and the facility’s method of procedure (MOP).

Dust and gaseous contamination need different controls

Particulate dust and gaseous contaminants are distinct risks, so one measurement or intervention cannot stand in for the other. Dust can accumulate on surfaces and filters; gaseous contaminants can contribute to corrosion even when visible dust is not the concern. ASHRAE’s current handbook chapter on data-centre environmental conditions identifies hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide, mercaptans, oxides of nitrogen, chlorine, and ozone as gases relevant to IT-equipment reliability.

Filtration examples are guidance, not automatic specifications

ASHRAE’s 2011 guideline references ISO 14644-1 Class 8 and describes examples that include continuously filtering room air with MERV 8 filters and filtering incoming air with MERV 11 to MERV 13 filters. It also describes G1 gaseous-contamination criteria of copper reactivity below 300 Å per month and silver reactivity below 200 Å per month. These are figures and examples in that dated guidance, not universal requirements for every current facility. Confirm applicable standard editions, site conditions, and equipment requirements before treating them as design or operating specifications.

How to connect cleaning with a reliability program

  1. Identify sources. Consider construction, equipment deliveries, doors, people, and outdoor air. Control staging and work practices so avoidable debris is not brought into technical spaces.
  2. Choose controls for the diagnosed problem. If particles are already deposited, cleaning may be appropriate; if they are continuously generated or entering with outside air, source reduction or filtration may matter more. Cleaning cannot substitute for fixing an ongoing source.
  3. Monitor the relevant contaminant. Particle measurements and gaseous-corrosion monitoring answer different questions. Use monitoring aligned with the concern, and do not treat a particle count as evidence of corrosion severity.
  4. Set scope and cadence from site conditions. Consider measured contamination, facility layout, airflow, sources, and the risk of disturbing equipment or settled dust. Document the rationale rather than relying on a calendar interval alone.
  5. Control the work. Use trained personnel, controlled access, a documented MOP, and equipment suited to the task. Uptime Institute recommends HEPA-filtered vacuums for deep cleaning to reduce the chance of returning particles to supply air.
  6. Check the outcome. Use relevant monitoring and inspection to determine whether the work addressed the identified condition and whether further source, filtration, or operational controls are needed.

How often should a data centre be cleaned?

There is no universal cleaning frequency established by the cited sources. Uptime Institute describes facilities setting schedules according to need; annual or biannual whole-facility cleaning are examples, not standards, and high-traffic areas may need more frequent attention. A site with active construction, frequent deliveries, or a particular contamination issue may warrant a different cadence from a controlled facility with different conditions.

Uptime Institute’s 2020 flash survey reported that 49% of data-centre owners increased regular cleaning frequency and 66% increased sanitization frequency during the COVID-19 period. Those are historical pandemic-era findings, not evidence of current operator practice or a recommended schedule.

Should you clean under a raised floor?

Underfloor and plenum spaces can be part of a deep-cleaning scope, but they should not be cleaned automatically or casually. The need and method depend on site conditions and airflow. Industry reporting by Data Center Dynamics describes how airflow changes can redistribute settled dirt, and how moisture or uncontrolled floor work can affect technical spaces. Work near equipment and below raised floors calls for specialized knowledge and coordination.

Before authorizing the work, assess the space, airflow, equipment exposure, and operational risks; define access and protective controls in the MOP; and use personnel qualified for the task. Do not assume that disturbing a dusty area is harmless simply because the material is out of sight.

In-house cleaning or a specialist contractor?

Approach Can make sense when Key controls
In-house routine work Staff are competent for the limited scope and know the equipment, security controls, and site procedures. Keep work to appropriate external surfaces around powered equipment; follow manufacturer instructions and the MOP.
Specialist deep cleaning The scope includes underfloor or plenum spaces, substantial accumulated contamination, or work requiring specialized methods. Confirm contractor competence, access controls, coordination, suitable equipment, and a documented method. Uptime Institute recommends HEPA-filtered vacuums for deep cleaning.

The choice is not simply whether outside help costs more. Assess staff capability, familiarity with equipment and security requirements, MOP discipline, and ability to manage underfloor or plenum work. Do not open equipment or remove fiber optics as part of general cleaning.

Keep cleaning, sanitization, and disinfection distinct

Cleaning removes dust, residue, and other material; sanitization and disinfection are different interventions. Uptime Institute’s 2020 pandemic analysis notes that disinfection can add cost and operational risk, and that any protection may be temporary. That historical analysis does not establish a need for routine whole-facility disinfection today. Set the intervention according to an identified operational or health requirement and the facility’s procedures, rather than treating it as a substitute for contamination control.
