StackPath built its edge platform to move computing and network delivery closer to end users and major internet exchanges, rather than routing every request through distant hubs. Its historical design paired distributed data-center hardware with orchestration software and a network of carrier connections, peering, Anycast, and private backbone links. StackPath announced in June 2024 that it would close all products and liquidate its assets, so this is an account of its strategy—not a description of a service that remains available.
Why StackPath pursued edge computing
StackPath’s strategy grew from a security-as-a-service business into a broader infrastructure platform. Acquisitions had added capabilities including infrastructure monitoring, DDoS mitigation, web application firewall (WAF), VPN, and content delivery network (CDN) services. The company’s next step was to place compute and networking at points where they could serve users and connect to traffic more directly.
When an application must send every request to a distant hub, the extra network distance can add delay and carry traffic across more of the public internet. StackPath’s stated rationale for locating infrastructure near users and major network exchanges was to reduce that distance and improve delivery. The benefit for any particular application would depend on where its users, data, and other services were located; edge placement was a deployment strategy, not a guarantee of a specific latency improvement.
How StackPath’s platform was designed
EdgeEngine for provisioning and management
StackPath’s circa-2023 platform brochure described EdgeEngine as the orchestration layer. Customers could use a portal and APIs to provision and manage platform resources, edge compute, applications, and accounts. This software layer coordinated resources across distributed locations rather than requiring each deployment to be operated in isolation.

Edge locations for distributed compute
The platform placed enterprise-grade compute and networking in markets with dense end-user populations. In a 2018 interview, StackPath founder and CEO Lance Crosby said the company selected colocation buildings that had at least three carriers and/or 500 Gbps of internet traffic being exchanged. The company also said it designed hardware to combine compute, memory, storage, and networking while staying within common data-center power constraints. These are descriptions of StackPath’s historical design choices, not current hardware guidance.
StackPath reported hardware in 45 locations as of late September 2018, according to the contemporaneous Data Center Knowledge interview. The same interview reported a company goal of reaching about 120 internet-exchange facilities. Crosby estimated, in that interview, that “There’s only about 120 of those in the world,” referring to facilities that met StackPath’s stated criteria; this was his historical estimate, not an independently verified current count.

Edge network for traffic delivery
The brochure described an edge network built from carrier connections, peering, Anycast, and a private backbone, with the intention of keeping traffic off the public internet where possible. These components complemented the distributed locations: compute close to users was more useful when the network could also direct traffic to those locations and connect them to other networks.
StackPath’s circa-2023 brochure reported 73 locations, 43 markets, and more than 100 Tbps of egress capacity. These are company-reported historical figures, not independently validated current capacity. They refer to a different date and set of measures than the 45 locations reported in 2018, so the figures should not be treated as a like-for-like growth comparison or as a current footprint.

Why the strategy looked toward 5G towers
StackPath’s early deployment focus was on colocation facilities associated with internet exchanges, where several networks already met. Its expansion logic also anticipated a shift as 5G networks spread into secondary and smaller cities: carriers would build facilities near cell towers, creating new places to position compute. Crosby described that planned direction in the 2018 interview: “People like me, we’ll chase the towers.”
The idea was to follow network infrastructure closer to users as deployment patterns changed, rather than relying exclusively on established exchange hubs. The interview discussed tower-adjacent planning with collaborators Vapor IO, EdgeMicro, and BitBox; it does not establish that those relationships or deployments remain active.

What StackPath’s edge platform was intended to do
In practical terms, the platform’s layers were intended to work together: EdgeEngine managed resources; distributed locations supplied compute and networking; and the edge network connected those locations to carriers and users. That combination was aimed at applications and services where delivery distance and network routing mattered. The historical materials explain the intended architecture, but do not establish measured performance gains for a specific workload.

In June 2024, StackPath told customers it had decided to close all products and liquidate assets for creditors, and that it would begin decommissioning services immediately, according to Data Center Dynamics. A report at the time described edge compute, DNS, object storage, network transit, colocation, and server monitoring among the affected services. StackPath should therefore be understood as a historical platform, not a service readers can sign up for.
