Spotify’s old same-network method for syncing computer-based Local Files to a phone is now described as a legacy feature that may not work as intended. A playlist can show a local track without transferring its audio: to play the file on your phone, put the audio file on that device and turn on Local audio files in Spotify.
Why a computer playlist does not sync its local tracks
Spotify’s desktop Show Local Files setting lets the desktop app read audio from folders on your computer. It does not, by itself, copy those files to a phone. The playlist entry and the audio file are separate: seeing an entry on mobile is not evidence that the file arrived there.
Spotify Community’s Local files on iOS knowledge-base article says that syncing local files across devices by downloading a playlist over the same network is a legacy feature that may no longer work as intended. Spotify does not state when the workflow changed or explain its technical cause. Treat same Wi-Fi as historical context, not a reliable fix.

- In Spotify desktop, open Settings and scroll to Library.
- Turn on Show Local Files. Under Show songs from, enable the folder containing the audio, or choose Add a source to select it.
- Open Your Library > Local Files and check whether the track appears. Spotify must have permission to read the folder where the file is stored.
If the track is absent here, check that the file is in a selected folder and that Spotify can access it before troubleshooting the phone.

Enable local audio on your phone
On either iPhone or Android, open Spotify Settings > Apps and devices and switch on Local audio files. Allow access in the phone’s own settings if Spotify prompts you. This setting lets Spotify use audio stored on the device; it does not transfer a file from your computer.
Put the audio file on the phone
Spotify’s Local files support instructions describe these device-specific options. Menu names and transfer prompts can vary by operating-system version.

iPhone or iPad: use the Files app
- Download or save the audio file to the device if it is currently in a browser or storage app.
- In Files, copy or move it into On My iPhone > Spotify.
- Open Spotify with Local audio files enabled and look for the audio in your library.
iPhone or iPad: transfer from a Mac
Connect the device and use its Finder device view to drag the file into Spotify under Music or Files. Spotify also documents a Universal Clipboard method when the Mac and iOS device use the same iCloud account; follow the current steps in its Local files support article.
iPhone or iPad: transfer from Windows
- Connect the device to the computer by USB and open iTunes.
- Select the iOS device, then drag the audio file into Spotify under Music or Files.
- Enable Local audio files in the Spotify app on the phone.
Android: download or transfer the audio
With Local audio files enabled, download the audio onto the Android device using a file-management or storage app, or copy it from a computer. Spotify’s Windows transfer steps include unlocking the phone, allowing data access, opening it in the file-transfer window, copying the file, and ejecting the device. A USB cable may be needed.

Know which Spotify feature you are using
- Local Files: audio files stored on your computer or phone and made visible to Spotify through its Local Files settings.
- Spotify offline downloads: Spotify catalog tracks or playlists saved for offline listening. Spotify’s Listen offline instructions say individual songs cannot be downloaded directly on mobile; add a song to a playlist and download that playlist instead. Wi-Fi is the default for downloads, with a setting to allow cellular. These catalog downloads do not establish that a computer’s local audio was transferred.
- Spotify Connect: a way to control playback on another device. Its same-Wi-Fi and device-discovery guidance concerns playback control, not copying audio files. See Spotify Connect.
If a file is still missing or will not play
Spotify’s Local files support guidance recommends general checks, but these should not be mistaken for a repair to the legacy network-sync workflow:

- Update Spotify and the phone or computer operating system.
- Remove the local-file entries from playlists where you added them, restart the add-files steps, and check again.
- If needed, follow Spotify’s clean-reinstall instructions. Reinstalling means you will need to download your Spotify music and podcasts again.
