Sony cut jobs at its South Wales television sites in 2005 as demand shifted from traditional cathode-ray tube (CRT) sets toward flat-screen TVs. The Welsh plants made CRT tubes and assembled televisions; Sony’s documented plan for European LCD production was at Nitra, Slovakia. The available evidence does not show that Welsh jobs were transferred there.
What happened at Sony’s Welsh sites in 2005?
The cuts came in two separate announcements recorded by Eurofound’s European Restructuring Monitor:
| Announcement | Pencoed | Bridgend | Planned losses |
|---|---|---|---|
| January 2005 | 220 | 80 | About 300 |
| June 2005 | 250 | 400 | A further 650 |
Eurofound’s record of the January announcement and its record of the June announcement describe planned losses, not a verified final headcount of redundancies. The figures should therefore be understood as two announcements rather than a confirmed total of people ultimately made redundant.

The Welsh operations were tied to CRT television production: the sites made CRT tubes and assembled sets. As flat-screen televisions gained ground, demand for conventional CRT televisions weakened, leaving less work for those operations. Contemporary reports and Sony’s explanation identified the accelerating technology shift as the market context for the cuts.

A Sony spokesperson told The Guardian in January 2005: “The move away from CRT-based TVs accelerated last year with flat panel products now accounting for around half the UK market by value.” The Guardian reported the statement; the newspaper did not provide an independent measurement methodology for the market-share figure, so it should be read as the spokesperson’s characterization.
How fast was the LCD market growing?
Sony’s 2007 annual report described a rapid global expansion. For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2007, Sony said the global LCD television market reached approximately 51.5 million units, 2.5 times the prior year’s size. Sony also reported shipping approximately 6.3 million BRAVIA LCD TVs in fiscal 2006. These are figures from Sony’s own annual report, not independently audited market estimates in the cited material. Did Welsh jobs move to Sony’s LCD factory in Slovakia?
No evidence in the cited records establishes that they did. Sony’s annual report described a plant under construction at Nitra, Slovakia, with planned annual European capacity of 3 million LCD TVs. That was a forward-looking European supply plan; it neither verifies that the planned capacity was achieved nor shows that workers or jobs from Wales were relocated there.

The distinction matters: the Welsh sites’ documented work involved CRT tubes and television assembly, while Nitra was described as planned LCD manufacturing capacity. The sources support a broader transition between technologies, not a direct transfer of Welsh positions to Slovakia.

What support was offered to affected workers?
In a July 2005 written answer, the UK government said Welsh bodies and Jobcentre Plus were working with Sony to help affected workers find alternative jobs. The answer also said the Secretary of State had discussed possible further investment at Pencoed with Sony chief executive Sir Howard Stringer. Hansard’s record of the written answer does not establish what happened to individual workers afterward.
What became of the Bridgend operation?
The television activity affected in 2005 is not the only work later associated with the site. A Welsh Government release in 2020 described Sony UK Technology Centre in Bridgend as a camera-manufacturing and customer-service operation. That is a dated description of the operation in 2020, not confirmation of its employment levels or exact status in 2026. Welsh Government, 2020
