If your zoomed-in phone photos are blurry, the telephoto camera may be struggling with low light, movement, a subject that is too close, dirty or covered camera glass, or a digital crop rather than the dedicated telephoto lens. Start by cleaning the camera windows, removing any obstructing cover, adding light, moving back from close subjects, tapping to focus, and holding the phone steady. The exact focus distance and camera-switching behavior depend on your phone model.

Why are my zoomed-in phone photos blurry?

Blur has different causes, and the pattern offers clues. Camera shake softens stationary details; a moving subject can smear against a sharp background; missed focus makes a different depth plane sharp; and close-focus limits can leave nearby subjects soft. Dirt, a protector, or an obstructing case can create haze or distortion. At some zoom settings, the phone may crop and enlarge an image rather than capture it with its dedicated telephoto camera, reducing fine detail.

Low light can make telephoto shots softer

A telephoto camera is not always the better choice in dim conditions. Huawei says that on the specific models covered by its guidance, the telephoto module has a smaller aperture and lower per-pixel ISO sensitivity than the primary camera, so it may not produce optimal results in low ambient light. That is model-specific, not a specification that applies to every phone. The phone may use another camera, or processing may reduce visible texture.

Google notes that low light can make Pixel photos dark, grainy, or blurry. Its Pixel Camera Help recommends Night Sight for low-light photography and says to keep both the camera and subject still; bracing the phone on a stable surface or tripod can help with stationary scenes. Huawei’s applicable model guidance is at Huawei Support.

Shake and subject movement look different

At a narrower telephoto view, small hand movements are more noticeable in the framing. If the phone moves during exposure, stationary details can blur. If the phone is steady but a person, pet, or vehicle moves, the subject may smear while the background remains relatively sharp. Stabilization or a tripod can steady the phone, but it cannot freeze a moving subject. Samsung’s camera troubleshooting guidance likewise identifies camera or subject movement as causes of blur and recommends steady handling and good light.

A nearby subject may be inside the focus limit

Some telephoto modules cannot focus as close as the main camera. Samsung describes its telephoto camera as intended for distant subjects and gives different example minimum distances for particular models: 30 cm for the Galaxy S25 Ultra 5x telephoto and 80 cm for the Galaxy S26 Ultra 5x telephoto. Google’s Pixel guidance separately recommends keeping the main subject at least 2 feet (60 cm) from the camera for optimal focus. These are vendor- and model-specific examples, not a universal phone-camera rule. If focus hunts or a nearby subject stays soft, move back and check the guidance for your exact model.

MIAO LAB 28X HD Telephoto Lens for iPhone/Samsung/Android, High Power Telephoto Camera Lens with Universal Clip Compatibility Most Smartphone - 28X
  • Get Closer To Everyday Distant Moments: Bring distant sports events, birds, boats and travel landmarks closer when your phone camera cannot reach. The 28X optical telephoto lens is designed for stable outdoor subjects approximately 49–262 ft / 15–80 m away, making everyday long-distance observation and smartphone photography more accessible.
  • Wider, More Natural Telephoto View: Compared with many higher-power phone telescopes, the 28X design provides a wider field of view and makes distant subjects easier to find and frame. It is a practical choice for beginners who prefer a more natural telephoto view instead of an extremely narrow image.
  • Smaller Edge Darkening—Phone Models May Vary: Designed to reduce edge darkening on many smartphones. Because camera position and sensor size vary, some newer multi-camera phones may still show slight dark edges at 1X. Center the lens over the main camera and apply a small amount of phone zoom when needed.
  • Manual Focus For Clearer Distant Detail: Rotate the focus ring slowly until your subject appears sharp. At 28X magnification, even small hand movements become visible, so brace your arms or use a tripod for clearer photos and video. For moving subjects, set your position and focus before the moment begins.Tripod is recommended and sold separately.
  • Universal Clip For Popular Smartphones: Works with many iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel and Android main cameras. Remove thick phone cases, identify the main 1X camera, center the lens carefully and disable automatic macro or lens switching when possible. The aluminum body also works as a compact handheld monocular for travel and outdoor observation.

Dirty glass or an accessory can cause haze

Fingerprints, dust, a lens protector, or a case overlapping a camera window can reduce clarity or cause flare, halos, or streaks. Google recommends wiping camera glass with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth and removing protective gear that covers the camera. Samsung warns that camera protectors or lens covers can affect focus or create light distortion; Apple also recommends removing cases, films, or accessories that may affect the camera and cleaning the lens with a microfiber cloth. See Google, Samsung, and Apple.

Shooting through a window can also affect camera selection on some phones. Huawei says glass can be detected as an obstruction within the telephoto focus limit on the specific models covered by its support page, preventing a switch to telephoto. Do not assume that the same behavior applies to other manufacturers.

Focus, depth of field, and zoom processing matter

Tap the intended subject in the viewfinder and give the camera enough light and distance to focus. A phone may also render parts of a close-up softly because they sit outside the plane of focus; Google’s Pixel guidance notes this effect on Pixel Pro models with larger camera sensors. Samsung says focus range depends on factors such as aperture, distance, and subject position. Softness outside the focused plane is not, by itself, proof that the camera is broken.

A zoom number on screen does not establish which physical camera captured the image. Phones may switch between wide and telephoto cameras, combine their output, or crop and enlarge a camera image at intermediate zoom levels. A paper in ACM Transactions on Graphics, available via arXiv, describes how cropping and upsampling can cost fine detail in smartphone zoom images. Its paper discusses a machine-learning camera-fusion approach; it does not establish the behavior of every phone or describe a setting consumers can enable. If images look soft only at certain zoom increments, cropping or a lens transition may be involved even when autofocus is working.

How to fix blurry telephoto photos

  1. Clean and uncover the camera windows. Gently wipe each rear camera window with a clean, soft, lint-free or microfiber cloth. Temporarily remove a lens protector or case if it overlaps the camera area. Cleaning will not fix a scratch or internal damage.
  2. Run a controlled comparison. Open the phone’s native camera app, choose a distant stationary subject with fine detail in good light, tap the subject to focus, and take several frames while holding the phone still. If the camera offers a dedicated optical telephoto step, test it and compare the result with the main camera. This comparison helps isolate conditions and camera selection; it does not certify hardware health.
  3. Move back from a close subject. If the camera hunts or the subject remains soft nearby, step back and reframe with zoom. Focus limits differ by phone and lens, so use the model’s own guidance rather than relying on a universal distance.
  4. Add light and stabilize for a still scene. Try brighter indirect light. For night mode, brace the phone or place it on a stable surface or tripod, and keep the subject still. Multi-frame night capture is poorly suited to moving subjects.
  5. Reduce zoom if fine detail looks smeared. Compare a lower zoom step with the main camera. The phone may be cropping, enlarging, or switching camera modules; the displayed zoom label alone does not prove that the dedicated telephoto camera captured the frame.
  6. Restart or update, then seek help if needed. Restart the phone and update its software or camera app where appropriate. Apple recommends restart and updates among its troubleshooting steps and says service may be needed if the issue persists. Xiaomi gives similar restart/update advice for the named REDMI Note 13 Pro issue and recommends after-sales inspection if its steps do not help. If blur began after a drop or liquid exposure, or one camera stays blurry in controlled tests, contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair service instead of assuming a universal DIY repair.
