Six review rounds can leave every verdict unchanged and still improve a technical comparison: the evidence behind each verdict can become clearer, more accurate, and easier to verify. That is the distinction at the center of Mahiro Hirakawa’s DEV Community essay, whose ledger row labeled probes=12/3 looked like a ratio even though it meant twelve probes run and three conditions declared. The verdict held; the row’s meaning did not.

How can review improve a result without changing it?

A review can test two different things: whether a conclusion is right, and whether the evidence shown for it lets another person check it. Those questions are related, but they are not identical. A verdict may remain “ahead,” “level,” or “behind” while wording, counts, or citations that support it are corrected.

Hirakawa reports six rounds in which no verdict changed. He describes the work as productive because the rounds exposed defects in how the ledger explained and substantiated its claims. The result was not a new comparison outcome; it was a more dependable route for a reader to inspect the existing outcome.

This account is a specific case, not a measured estimate of how often reviews preserve verdicts. Its useful lesson is narrower: unchanged conclusions do not, by themselves, show that review did nothing. Ask what became more trustworthy or checkable.

What was wrong with the ledger row?

One sentence compressed three outcomes into one

A closing sentence reportedly said an operation returns “not contained” for a failing name. But the code had three outcomes: “not contained,” a name outside the root that was absent, and a race that exceeded its bound and remained unsettled. By describing one case as though it represented the full set, the sentence made the behavior seem simpler than it was.

The practical fix is to make the scope of a summary explicit. If behavior has multiple outcomes, name them or state clearly that the sentence describes only one. Concision is useful only when it preserves the distinctions a reader needs to understand the claim.

A slash made two counts look like a ratio

The ledger entry probes=12/3 meant twelve probes run and three conditions declared—not twelve divided by three, and not a ratio. The notation borrowed the visual form of neighboring rows without making the two quantities’ meanings clear. As Hirakawa puts it, “A count and a ratio look identical and mean different things.”

Label each number with its quantity, and identify its source when that matters. If the values are independent counts, write them as independent counts rather than relying on a slash or a convention that a new reader may not know.

The cited ranges did not fit the claims

Hirakawa gives two examples: one row cited nine lines where seven were needed; another cited six lines where twelve were needed. These are different problems. A range that is wider than necessary can make evidence harder to inspect, while a range that is too narrow may not support the broader claim attached to it.

A citation should cover the relevant basis for the claim, without implying that a small fragment substantiates more than it shows. Checking range size is not a substitute for judging whether the cited material actually supports the claim, but it can reveal an obvious mismatch between claim scope and evidence scope.

What did the review rounds add?

Rather than stopping at corrections to individual rows, Hirakawa says the team added three readers to its checking apparatus. They were designed to address the defect types that review had exposed:

  • A reader that resolves cited ranges and compares their extent with the associated claim.
  • A reader that rejects a paired count unless both values come from declared sources.
  • A reader that parses ledger tables instead of trusting their visual shape.

The repaired examples also made the two counts explicit and gave each its own name. These readers are described as checks built from the defects found in those reviews—not as tools proven to catch every citation or data error. A reusable check can catch a recurring class of mistake in future rows; it cannot establish that every claim is sound.

When is a review really an evidence audit?

At first, reviewers may be asking whether a claim or verdict is correct. But if rounds increasingly focus on citation ranges, field meanings, and whether a ledger can be parsed reliably, the work has shifted toward auditing the evidence apparatus. Naming that shift helps set the right expectations: reviewers are improving how claims can be checked, even if they are no longer changing the claims’ outcomes.

That distinction can also guide who reviews the next round and what “done” means. A claim review should ask whether the conclusion follows from the evidence. An evidence audit should ask whether the evidence is represented, scoped, and made inspectable well enough to support that evaluation. These are complementary activities, not competing verdicts.

How to make each review round produce a durable check

  1. Identify the failure precisely. Is the issue incomplete wording, ambiguous notation, a missing source, or a citation range that does not match the claim?
  2. Fix the row and clarify its meaning. Name distinct outcomes, label separate counts, and make the evidence scope legible.
  3. Ask whether the defect can recur. If it can, build a repeatable reader or validation rule for that class of problem rather than relying only on memory.
  4. Run the new check on the ledger. Confirm that it detects the known defect, while treating that as evidence about this check—not proof that the whole ledger is error-free.
  5. Record what exists now that did not exist before. Hirakawa’s proposed progress test is: “After a review round, name what now runs that did not run before. If the answer is nothing, that round produced an opinion.”

That test is a prompt to distinguish a durable control from discussion alone. A round that produces no new check may still improve understanding or correct a claim; the point is to be explicit about what kind of progress it made.

What the six-round story does—and does not—show

In Hirakawa’s account, six rounds left the verdicts intact while improving the ability to check the ledger. The examples show why a fixed conclusion is not the same thing as fixed evidence: a sentence can omit outcomes, a pair of counts can masquerade as a ratio, and citations can be poorly scoped without forcing a verdict change.

The essay does not establish a general review success rate or show that the added readers eliminate errors. It offers a practical distinction for technical teams: review conclusions for correctness, and audit the evidence apparatus when the recurring problems concern how those conclusions are represented and verified.
