But it is not a rule to wait, avoid evidence, or tolerate every unknown: the right response depends on what is uncertain, whether more information can help, and what it costs to delay.
What “sitting with uncertainty” means
It means noticing that you do not yet have a clear answer without immediately forcing one. That pause can make room to examine the decision rather than reaching for certainty simply to relieve discomfort. It does not mean ignoring evidence or putting off a choice indefinitely.
Uncertainty can take different forms: you may lack information, not understand the situation well enough to interpret what you know, or find that the available options are difficult to distinguish. A useful response depends on which problem you face. In a 1997 analysis of 102 real-world decision reports, Lipshitz and Strauss described these as distinct sources of uncertainty and identified several ways people cope with them.
Why a pause can help—and what the evidence shows
When uncertainty feels uncomfortable, a person may seek repeated reassurance, search for more cues, or delay acting. Those behaviors can prolong indecision rather than resolve the question. In a 2024 experience-sampling study, intolerance of uncertainty was associated with greater indecisiveness and decisional safety behavior in everyday decisions; problematic safety behavior was also associated with more subsequent indecisiveness. The findings describe relationships observed in daily life, not proof that every pause improves a decision.

Responses to uncertainty involve thoughts, feelings, and behavior, and they vary with circumstances and personal factors. A 2020 scoping review selected 19 articles on uncertainty in medical decision-making and organized the process across multiple components. A 2023 systematic review of 17 qualitative healthcare studies identified experience, collaboration, patient-provider dynamics, and setting as relevant moderators of uncertainty tolerance. These reviews concern healthcare contexts, so they help explain why responses differ but do not establish a universal formula for personal decisions.
One small experiment illustrates why context matters: among 49 participants completing three tasks, intolerance-of-uncertainty scores were related to the number of cues sought in a moderately ambiguous inference task, but not in an unambiguous task or a highly ambiguous one. That narrow result should not be treated as a general rule about how much information anyone should gather.

Choose a response that fits the uncertainty
Use these questions to turn an uneasy unknown into a manageable decision. This is a practical framework based on reported coping strategies, not a clinically validated intervention.
- Name what is uncertain. Is a key fact missing, is the situation hard to understand, or are the alternatives difficult to tell apart?
- Check whether more information could change the choice. If it could, identify the specific gap and a proportionate way to address it. If it would not affect the decision, continued searching may add little.
- Separate facts from assumptions. Write down what is known, what you are inferring, and what you cannot establish. If you must proceed on an assumption, make it explicit.
- Compare the options that remain. Weigh plausible benefits and harms, what is known versus assumed, whether the decision can be reversed, the cost of waiting, and whose preferences define a good outcome. Reversibility, delay cost, and personal values are useful prompts, not findings tested by the cited studies.
- Set a threshold for acting. Decide what information would be enough and when you will revisit the choice if important facts change. This can prevent a reasonable pause from becoming open-ended delay.
The 1997 decision-report analysis identified reducing uncertainty, making assumptions explicit, weighing pros and cons, suppressing uncertainty, and forestalling as coping strategies. The first three can be useful depending on the situation. Suppression and delay are not automatically helpful: they may conceal an unresolved issue rather than address it.

When waiting helps, and when it can hurt
Pause when a specific, obtainable piece of information could materially change the choice and the cost of waiting is acceptable. Act with the information available when further searching is unlikely to resolve the uncertainty, the decision has a meaningful deadline, or delay itself carries risk. Neither low nor high tolerance for uncertainty guarantees good judgment; a 2023 healthcare review emphasizes that experience and context can shape responses, and that experience is not invariably beneficial.
Do not treat discomfort as proof that you need more information, or as proof that you should simply push through. The useful question is whether the next step will improve the decision enough to justify its cost—whether that step is gathering evidence, comparing options, or choosing despite an unavoidable unknown.

For medical decisions, bring uncertainty to a clinician
Medical choices can involve uncertain diagnoses, evaluations, and treatments, as well as trade-offs that depend on a patient’s circumstances and preferences. A 2020 scoping review and a 2024 review of physicians’ intolerance of uncertainty describe decision-making as complex and shaped by cognitive, emotional, and behavioral responses. If a medical decision is consequential, use uncertainty as a reason to discuss options, evidence, risks, and preferences with a qualified clinician—not as a reason to self-diagnose or defer necessary care.

What not to conclude from the studies
- Uncertainty is not always beneficial. Some unknowns can be reduced with useful information; tolerating uncertainty is not the same as refusing to investigate.
- A pause is not automatically a better decision. The 2024 experience-sampling findings show associations with indecisiveness and safety behavior, not that waiting itself improves decision quality.
- Stress is not a decision-making tool. Two 2020 reward-choice experiments—one with 114 participants and another with 95—found that an induced acute-stress condition was associated with choosing a higher-uncertainty option offering larger long-term rewards over a more stable, smaller-reward option. That task-specific result is not evidence that stress improves judgment generally or that anyone should seek it.
- Indecision is not a diagnosis. These studies do not establish that an individual’s difficulty deciding signals anxiety or another condition.
