An introductory shared-hosting price is a promotional rate for an initial subscription term; the renewal price is what applies to a later term. The advertised monthly figure may be an average based on prepaying for many months, not the amount charged each month. To understand what you will pay, check the commitment length, total due now, renewal rate and renewal term.

Why did my shared hosting price go up when it renewed?

Hosting providers may offer a lower price for the initial term and charge a different rate when that term ends. For example, Bluehost says its special offers are limited-time, apply to new customers and are valid for the initial term only—not successive or renewal periods (Bluehost pricing terms).

The amount can also change with the length of the next term. A monthly renewal, a 12-month renewal and a 36-month renewal may have different monthly rates. The renewal price is therefore not always one fixed amount; read the rate alongside the term it applies to.

What does an advertised monthly hosting price mean?

A monthly equivalent can be a way to express the cost of a longer plan, rather than a month-to-month billing option. The practical check is the total charge for the selected term, not just the monthly figure.

Before checkout, confirm how long the initial price lasts, whether the full term is charged upfront, and what amount is due today. Check the renewal rate and term separately. Prices, offers, eligibility and final charges can vary by date and market, so confirm the current provider terms and checkout total.

How to compare introductory and renewal costs

Compare plans over the same time horizon and on equivalent terms. A long-term introductory monthly equivalent is not directly comparable to a month-to-month rate. Record the following for each plan:

  • Initial term: how long the promotional price applies and whether the term is prepaid.
  • Initial total due: the amount charged for that term, rather than only its monthly equivalent.
  • Renewal term and price: the rate that applies after the initial term and the length of the renewal period.
  • Plan scope: compare the stated site, storage, traffic, backup, email, SSL and migration inclusions; do not assume similarly named plans include the same things.
  • Billing controls: check whether renewal is automatic, when billing occurs, and how to change renewal settings or cancel.
  • Checkout conditions: verify applicable taxes, eligibility and market-specific terms.

Example: Bluehost Starter renewal rates

Bluehost’s retrieved official pricing pages showed Starter at $3.99 per month for a 36-month initial term, with a stated renewal price of $9.99 per month. Its renewal table listed different rates by renewal term:

Starter renewal term Listed renewal rate
Monthly $15.99 per month
12 months $11.99 per month
36 months $9.99 per month

These are examples from Bluehost’s pages, not guaranteed current prices or a universal offer. The official renewal table was updated February 11, 2026; check the current plan, market and checkout amount before relying on a figure (Bluehost hosting pricing; Bluehost renewal price list).

When can a renewal charge occur?

Automatic billing and renewal timing are provider-specific. SiteGround’s help page says shared and cloud hosting plans use automatic recurring billing and that plans with renewal periods of at least 12 months are renewed 15 days before expiration. Treat this as a SiteGround-specific policy example, not an industry-wide rule. Check your provider’s billing page and account settings for its current timing and cancellation process (SiteGround renewal billing information).

What to check before buying or renewing

  1. At signup: identify the introductory term and its full total charge; confirm whether the monthly figure is merely an average.
  2. Before the term ends: find the renewal rate and the term to which it applies, then compare the total cost over the next period.
  3. Review the plan: verify that the features and resource limits still meet your needs and match any alternative plan you are considering.
  4. Check billing settings: confirm whether automatic renewal is enabled and the deadline for changing it or cancelling.
  5. Verify the final amount: review current terms and checkout details for your region before committing.

No reliable cross-provider statistic establishes how often shared-hosting renewal prices rise or the average size of an increase. Provider-specific prices should not be treated as an industry average.
