If Set time zone automatically is greyed out in Windows, the control may be restricted because it changes a system-wide setting, controlled by your organization, or dependent on location access for automatic detection. The grey appearance alone does not identify which cause applies. Check which control is disabled, then check location settings and whether the PC is managed before trying to change the time zone.
First, identify which date and time control is disabled
In Windows 11 and Windows 10, open Settings > Time & language > Date & time. Windows lists separate controls for Set time automatically, Set time zone automatically, and manual Time zone selection. The first controls clock synchronization; it is not the automatic time-zone switch. Microsoft documents these controls and the manual selection steps in its date, time, and time-zone settings guide.
Note whether only the automatic time-zone switch is grey, or whether the manual time-zone dropdown is unavailable too. That distinction helps narrow down whether the issue is automatic detection or a broader permission or policy restriction.

Windows uses location to determine a time zone automatically. In a May 18, 2023 Windows Office Hours discussion, Microsoft employee Sean McLaren explained that automatic time-zone detection requires location, so the two settings can be tied together. This is a documented explanation for a possible cause, not evidence that every greyed-out control on every Windows 11 build has the same cause.

- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Location in Windows 11.
- Check whether Location services and relevant location access are available and enabled, if you want Windows to detect the time zone automatically.
- If a location control is greyed out or says it is managed, do not try to force it on: an administrator or device policy may be controlling access.
The Windows 11 location path above is a practical check; Microsoft’s detailed policy and configuration guidance cited below is scoped to Windows 10.
Check administrator rights and device management
Personal Windows 10 PC
Microsoft Learn states that non-administrator users cannot change or interact with Set time zone automatically in Windows 10 because it is a system-wide setting. If you are using a standard account, ask an administrator of the PC to make the change. This specific rule is documented for Windows 10 and should not be assumed to describe every Windows 11 release.

Work- or school-managed PC
Group Policy, registry configuration, or mobile device management (MDM) can control time-zone or location settings. If Windows says a setting is “managed by your organization,” ask your IT administrator whether a policy is responsible and what configuration is allowed. In a May 18, 2023 Microsoft Tech Community discussion, McLaren said that a managed message can stem from Group Policy, a registry change, or MDM; he recommended Microsoft Support if the cause is unclear.

Set the time zone manually if Windows allows it
If you do not want to use location-based detection, or it is unavailable, Microsoft Support’s user-facing method is to disable automatic time-zone selection and choose a zone from the dropdown:
- Go to Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
- Turn Set time zone automatically off, if the switch is available.
- Choose the correct zone from the Time zone dropdown.
If the switch or dropdown is disabled as well, changing the selection may require an administrator or a change to the device’s policy. Do not assume that turning off Set time automatically will unlock time-zone selection; it is a separate setting.

Why registry edits are not a good first fix
Microsoft’s Windows 10 administrator article lists the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicestzautoupdateStart values 3 to enable and 4 to disable automatic time-zone updates. It also documents a location-consent value of Allow or Deny. These are administrative configuration details, not recommended steps for an ordinary user to try as a workaround.

A policy can override manual registry changes, and changing location configuration without authorization may conflict with the device’s management rules. If you administer the PC, follow Microsoft’s Windows 10 guidance and check applicable policy; on an organization-managed device, ask IT to review it.

What to do based on what you find
- Only automatic time-zone detection is unavailable: check location access if automatic detection is your goal.
- You use a standard Windows 10 account: ask a PC administrator, since Microsoft documents this system-wide setting as unavailable to non-administrators.
- The PC is managed or shows an organization message: ask the administrator to check Group Policy, MDM, or other configuration.
- The manual dropdown is available: turn automatic time-zone selection off and choose the intended zone.
- The controls remain disabled and the cause is unclear: contact the PC administrator or Microsoft Support rather than editing registry settings blindly.
