A client-side secret scan can catch a likely credential before Git records it in a commit, giving the developer a chance to replace it before the commit is shared. It is an early warning, not a guarantee: local hooks can be bypassed, scanners recognize only configured patterns, and a credential already committed must be treated as exposed. Use local scanning alongside CI, repository-host push protection where available, historical scans, and a response plan that starts by revoking or rotating confirmed credentials.

Why scan before creating a commit?

The commit is a practical moment to catch a mistake: the change is still open, and the developer can remove a hardcoded credential and use the project’s approved secret-injection method instead. A pre-commit hook can scan staged changes and stop a commit when it detects a match. Gitleaks documents this kind of hook integration and an example where a detected secret causes the commit to fail (Gitleaks).

Early feedback matters because Git history can travel farther than the current file. OWASP warns that once a secret reaches a Git repository it should be considered compromised: history is difficult to scrub, repositories may be cloned or forked, and automated systems scan public commits. Removing a line later does not invalidate the credential or reliably erase every copy. (OWASP DevSecOps Guideline.)

How the safeguards fit together

No single scan covers every route by which a secret can be missed or exposed. Treat the controls as layers with different timing and scope.

Local pre-commit hook Before a local commit is created; commonly scans staged changes. Fast feedback while the developer can fix the change. A developer can bypass a local hook, and detection depends on its rules and configuration.
CI scanning During automated builds or pull-request checks; scope depends on configuration. An independent check that can catch changes when a local hook was skipped. It does not by itself establish that older repository history is clean.
Host-side push protection At push time, before detected content reaches the hosted repository. Can block recognized credentials on supported, enabled repositories. Coverage depends on the host’s feature availability and detection scope.
Historical scanning Scans existing repository history, including commits predating current safeguards. Can find older exposures that a new local hook would not revisit. A finding still requires credential response; removing it from history alone is not enough.

OWASP recommends a layered approach: local checks, CI scanning, push protection where supported, and scans of repository history. The layers are complementary, not interchangeable (OWASP DevSecOps Guideline).

What a local scanning workflow should do

  1. Install a maintained scanner as a pre-commit hook. Gitleaks documents a pre-commit integration and installation guidance in its project README.
  2. Pin the hook revision in the repository configuration. Update it periodically rather than relying on a copied, potentially stale version number.
  3. Scan the relevant staged content. Configure the check to cover the changes about to be committed, and make sure contributors know how to interpret and report a finding.
  4. Keep detection rules and exclusions under review. Add custom patterns where needed, and scrutinize allowlists: broad exclusions can suppress genuine findings.
  5. Make failures actionable without exposing the secret again. Report the file location and rule, but avoid printing the complete credential into terminal output or logs.
  6. Provide a reviewed false-positive and bypass process. Record and review bypasses rather than treating a skipped hook as a clean scan.
  7. Repeat scanning independently in CI and scan history periodically. A local hook is a developer aid, not an enforcement boundary.

What host-side push protection can—and cannot—do

GitHub describes push protection as a feature intended to prevent hardcoded credentials from being pushed. In practical terms, it can reject a push when it detects a supported secret pattern. That is a useful backstop after a local commit has been created, but it is not universal detection. GitHub’s coverage and enablement depend on repository type and the applicable feature; repository push protection requires the feature and is disabled by default for repositories. Check GitHub’s current documentation for eligibility and configuration details before planning deployment (GitHub Docs: About push protection).

GitHub documents several limits: push protection covers only a subset of supported patterns, a scan may time out, and pushes larger than 50 MB to public repositories are skipped. Detection can also be affected by previously alerted secrets and pattern versions. Therefore, a successful push is not proof that the content contains no secret (GitHub Docs: Secret scanning detection scope).

What to do when a real credential is found

  1. Rotate or revoke the credential promptly. Use the issuing service’s controls to invalidate the exposed value; deleting a line or rewriting Git history does not make the credential safe again.
  2. Review access logs and assess possible misuse. Follow the organization’s incident-response process and any applicable privacy process.
  3. Clean repository history when appropriate. Coordinate with repository owners and collaborators who may have cloned the repository. History cleanup is secondary to invalidating the credential.
  4. Check for related exposure. Scan relevant repository history and review the scope of affected credentials and systems.

OWASP’s guidance treats secret exposure as an incident requiring action; GitHub’s documentation describes push protection as a preventive feature, not a substitute for credential response (OWASP DevSecOps Guideline; GitHub Docs: About push protection).
