When scrolling fails in Chrome, first determine its scope: does the wheel or touchpad fail in other applications, on every Chrome page, or only on one website? That single comparison separates an input-device or operating-system problem from a Chrome profile, rendering, extension, or page problem. Test those boundaries before changing drivers, resetting Chrome, or enabling experimental flags.

Start with a two-minute diagnosis

  1. Test another application. Scroll in a document, file manager, or another browser. If scrolling also fails there, Chrome is unlikely to be the root cause. Check the mouse or touchpad connection, battery, physical switch, operating-system scrolling settings, and device driver.
  2. Test more than one Chrome page. A single page may capture the wheel, contain a nested scroll area, or have a script that interferes with input. Open a plain new tab and a second unrelated site. If only one page is affected, the page—not Chrome as a whole—is the leading suspect.
  3. Compare Chrome with another browser. If the same device scrolls normally elsewhere but not in Chrome, continue with the Chrome checks below. This comparison is diagnostic; it does not by itself identify the exact cause.
  4. Describe the symptom precisely. “No movement,” “jumps several screens,” “lags,” “moves only inside a panel,” and “two-finger scrolling is ignored” point to different investigations.

These comparisons are practical applications of Google’s general troubleshooting approach for Chrome failures: check whether a problem affects one site or several and test another browser where appropriate. They are not a dedicated Google scrolling test.

Fixes for scrolling problems limited to Chrome

1. Reload, restart, and update

  1. Reload the affected tab with Ctrl+R (Windows/Linux) or Command+R (macOS).
  2. Quit Chrome completely, then open it again. On Windows, close every Chrome window; on macOS use Chrome > Quit Google Chrome.
  3. Open ⋮ > Help > About Google Chrome. Chrome checks for an update. If one installs, select Relaunch.

A stalled renderer, temporary input state, or an update waiting for restart can disappear after this sequence. If only one site remains affected, clear that site’s data or test it in a private window before changing global settings.

2. Use Incognito to test the profile

Open ⋮ > New Incognito window (or press Ctrl+Shift+N/Command+Shift+N) and visit the same page. Incognito is a diagnostic comparison, not proof of an extension fault. If scrolling works there, a normal-profile extension, theme, cached state, or site setting is a plausible cause.

Logitech M185 Compact Ambidextrous Wireless Mouse with Rubber Grips - Blue
  • Compact Mouse: With a comfortable and contoured shape, this Logitech ambidextrous wireless mouse feels great in either right or left hand and is far superior to a touchpad

In a normal window, open ⋮ > Extensions > Manage extensions. Turn extensions off, reload the page, and test. If the problem disappears, re-enable extensions one at a time until the behavior returns. Remove or reconfigure the extension that reproduces it. Do not assume that every extension is safe to leave disabled permanently; some provide necessary accessibility or workflow features.

3. Toggle hardware acceleration as a reversible test

  1. Open ⋮ > Settings > System.
  2. Find Use hardware acceleration when available.
  3. Switch it to the opposite state and select Relaunch.
  4. Repeat the same scrolling test on the same page.

Google lists disabling hardware acceleration for certain hardware-related Chrome problems. It is not a universal scrolling remedy. If there is no improvement—or graphics, video, or battery behavior gets worse—restore the original setting and relaunch again.

4. Reset modified Chrome flags

If you have changed experimental settings, enter chrome://flags in the address bar, select Reset all, and relaunch Chrome. Avoid copying advice that enables a particular flag as a universal fix: flags are experimental, can interact with graphics and input behavior, and may change between Chrome versions. If you never changed flags, this step is lower priority than Incognito and extension isolation.

5. Close expensive tabs and inspect Chrome Task Manager

Many tabs, a script-heavy page, or a runaway extension can make scrolling appear delayed. Close unused tabs first. Then open ⋮ > More tools > Task manager (or press Shift+Esc), sort by CPU or memory, and look for a page or extension consuming an unusual share. Select it and choose End process only when you can safely discard that tab’s work. Task Manager is a performance diagnostic, not a scrolling-specific cure.

6. Reset Chrome settings only as a last browser step

  1. Open ⋮ > Settings.
  2. Select Reset settings.
  3. Choose Restore settings to their original defaults, review the explanation, and confirm.

This changes selected browser settings, including extensions and themes. Google says saved bookmarks and passwords are not deleted or changed. You will still need to review site permissions, startup behavior, search settings, and any extensions after the reset. Restart Chrome and test before making further changes.

Logitech M510 Full Size Ambidextrous 2.4 GHz Wireless Mouse
  • Your hand can relax in comfort hour after hour with this ergonomically designed mouse. Its contoured shape with soft rubber grips, gently curved sides and broad palm area give you the support you need for effortless control all day long.
  • You’ve got the control to do more, faster. Flipping through photo albums and Web pages is a breeze, especially for right-handers—with three standard buttons plus Back/Forward buttons that you can also program to switch applications, go full screen and more. And side-to-side scrolling plus zoom gives you the power to scroll horizontally and vertically through your music library, maps and Facebook feeds, and zoom in and out of photos and budget spreadsheets with a click.* * Requires Logitech SetPoint software (Windows) or Logitech Control Center software (Mac OS X)
  • Two years of battery life practically eliminates the need to replace batteries. ** The On/Off switch helps conserve power, smart sleep mode extends battery life and an indicator light eliminates surprises. ** Battery life may vary based on user and computing conditions.
  • The tiny Logitech Unifying receiver stays in your laptop. There’s no need to unplug it when you move around, so there’s less worry of it being lost. And you can easily add compatible wireless mice and keyboards to the same wireless receiver.
  • Connection: reconnect a USB receiver, try another port, or re-pair Bluetooth. Replace or charge the battery.
  • Physical input: test another mouse, another touchpad gesture, or an external device. A failing wheel encoder can cause skips or reverse movement.
  • Operating-system settings: verify that two-finger scrolling is enabled and that the selected device is active. Check whether an accessibility setting, focus mode, or per-application gesture utility is intercepting input.
  • Driver or firmware: use the operating system or the device maker’s supported update path. Do not install an unverified “driver fixer” merely because Chrome is affected.
  • Hardware isolation: if a second device works everywhere, the original device or its connection is more likely than Chrome. If every device fails, investigate the operating system.

Do not replace hardware based only on a Chrome-only symptom. Establish that the failure follows the device across applications first.

Page-specific causes and checks

The pointer is over a nested panel

Dashboards, code editors, chat panes, and maps often have their own scroll container. Move the pointer over the page’s main content and try again. A panel may scroll only when it has focus, or it may stop at its own top and bottom boundaries.

A site script captures the wheel

Test the URL in Incognito and with extensions disabled. If the problem occurs only on that site, clear its site data through the lock icon next to the address, then reload. Be aware that this signs you out or removes local preferences for that site.

  • Long-Range: Reliable, long-range Bluetooth wireless mouse works up to 10m/33 feet away from your computer (3)

The page is still loading

Wait for large images, advertisements, or application scripts to finish, then test. A page that repeatedly freezes or reloads may be exhausting CPU or memory; use Chrome Task Manager to identify it rather than repeatedly clicking the wheel.

What not to do

  • Do not enable a random Chrome flag because a forum post calls it a scrolling fix.
  • Do not reset Chrome before testing Incognito and extensions; a reset changes settings without proving the cause.
  • Do not assume a community suggestion is current or verified. Chrome behavior, flags, and operating-system controls change.
  • Do not keep hardware acceleration disabled if it creates a different graphics problem.
  • Do not delete profile data or reinstall Chrome before recording bookmarks, passwords, and extension requirements.

Only one Chrome site fails Incognito, then clear that site’s data Page script, nested panel, extension, or site state
All Chrome pages fail, other apps work Restart/update, Incognito, extensions, acceleration toggle Chrome profile, renderer, extension, or graphics path

Collect useful details before reporting

If the issue remains confined to Chrome, record the Chrome version from ⋮ > Help > About Google Chrome, operating-system version, mouse or touchpad model and driver source, affected URLs, whether Incognito changes the behavior, whether extensions are disabled, and whether another browser scrolls normally. Include a short reproduction sequence, such as “open this page, place the pointer over the article, rotate the wheel three notches.” Those details make Chrome feedback or device support more actionable. There is no official scrolling-specific escalation checklist identified here, so this is practical information to provide rather than a Google-prescribed form.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does scrolling work in another browser but not Chrome?

That pattern points toward Chrome’s profile, extensions, rendering path, or page interaction rather than the physical input device. Use the restart, Incognito, extension, and hardware-acceleration tests in that order.

Will resetting Chrome delete my bookmarks and passwords?

Google says the settings reset leaves saved bookmarks and passwords unchanged, although it changes selected settings, extensions, and themes.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I enable a Chrome flag to repair scrolling?

No. If flags were changed, use chrome://flags and choose Reset all, then relaunch. A specific experimental flag is not a universal or durable fix.

What information should I include in a bug report?

Provide Chrome and operating-system versions, input-device model and driver source, affected sites, results in another browser and Incognito, extension status, and exact steps that reproduce the failure.
