Browser and operating-system rendering, fonts, viewport and pixel scale, page state, capture timing, and the comparison threshold can all change the image or how a tool classifies it. To make results repeatable, first standardize the capture environment and state; adjust diff tolerance only after identifying the cause.
Why unchanged pages can produce different screenshots
A screenshot records a rendered page at a particular moment in a particular environment. A difference can come from the page, the capture setup, or the comparison rule. Separate those causes before changing a threshold: otherwise, a test may stop reporting noise but also stop catching real regressions.
Browser, operating system, and rendering environment
Operating systems and browser builds can render text, form controls, and scrollbars differently. Browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can also affect rendering. Playwright advises generating and comparing snapshots in the same environment. Playwright’s visual comparisons guide lists these environmental factors.
Managed capture services have their own rendering environments. BrowserStack Percy documents that its browsers run on managed infrastructure and notes that Linux-rendered text can differ from what a developer sees locally on Windows or macOS. If a suite covers multiple browsers, treat each browser’s screenshot as a platform-specific result rather than expecting one universal image. Percy notes that browsers can produce different visual diff counts.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Fonts and resources that arrive late
If a font has not loaded when the image is captured, the browser may use a fallback. Different letter widths can change line breaks and shift nearby content. Images, stylesheets, and other resources arriving late can cause similar movement. Chromatic’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking that fonts load consistently when text alignment differs between local and captured results; its unstable-test guidance also identifies late fonts and network requests as sources of inconsistent captures. See Chromatic’s snapshot troubleshooting guide and Chromatic’s guidance on unstable tests.
Timing, dynamic data, and animation
A timestamp, changing test value, ad, cursor, hover state, or animation can differ from one capture to the next. A screenshot taken while a page is still updating may show a different state even if the application code has not changed.

Chromatic uses a period of network inactivity as a heuristic for deciding whether a page is ready; this is an approximation, not proof that every application-specific update has finished. It pauses CSS animations and transitions, videos, and GIFs, but says JavaScript-driven animation may need to be paused by the test or application. Playwright’s screenshot assertion instead waits until two consecutive screenshots match before comparing. These approaches reduce some variability, but neither can infer every state that matters to your application. See Chromatic’s snapshot documentation and Playwright’s visual comparisons guide.
Viewport, device pixel ratio, and screenshot scale
Viewport dimensions affect responsive layout and visible content. Device pixel ratio (DPR) and screenshot scale affect image dimensions and pixel density. Playwright’s screenshot scale can be css, with one image pixel per CSS pixel, or device, with one image pixel per device pixel. Device-scale captures can therefore be larger on high-DPI devices.

Chromatic documents DPR 2.0 snapshots in Capture 9 and warns that a DPR 2.0 image compared with a DPR 1.0 baseline is reported as changed even if the interface is otherwise identical. Make sure the baseline and new capture use the intended, matching viewport and scale. Chromatic also documents that snapshots can vary by viewport and device configuration. See Chromatic’s snapshot documentation and Playwright’s screenshot options.
Diff thresholds and pixel comparison
A comparison rule determines whether a pixel-level difference is reported; it does not change the screenshot itself. Playwright offers a YIQ perceptual color threshold, where 0 is strict and 1 is lax, along with settings for the maximum number or ratio of differing pixels. A looser threshold can suppress small color variations, but it can also hide a small real change. Choose tolerances based on which differences matter to the test, not simply to make a flaky test pass. Details are in Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation.

A practical sequence for diagnosing a visual diff
- Standardize the environment. Capture the baseline and new image with the same browser build, operating system or container image, headless setting, viewport, and device scale. Playwright recommends using the same environment for snapshot generation and comparison. If using managed capture, account for its rendering environment rather than comparing it as if it were the same as your local machine.
- Check text and resource loading. If text shifted or wrapped, confirm that the intended fonts and images have loaded. Stabilize network-dependent data or mock values that change between runs.
- Inspect dynamic elements. Look for animations, videos, cursors, hover states, timestamps, ads, and other time-dependent content. Pause or disable them when animation is not what the test is intended to verify.
- Compare image dimensions and scale. Check that both captures use the same viewport and intended CSS-pixel or device-pixel scale. A DPR mismatch can make otherwise similar captures incompatible.
- Read the diff before changing tolerance. Broad shifts in layout or content suggest a different page state or rendering setup; fine edge-level changes may be rendering variation. Adjust thresholds or allowed differing pixels only after deciding which kind of difference you are seeing.
- Mask only irrelevant variability. If a region changes but is outside the assertion’s purpose, mask it or apply a screenshot-only stylesheet. Keep meaningful content and layout visible so the test can still catch regressions.
What the main visual-testing approaches control
These tools document different ways to manage capture and review. Their documentation describes product behavior; it is not an independent benchmark comparing their accuracy.
| Tool | Documented approach | Useful comparison questions |
|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | Website screenshot API and MCP server. Its clean-shot options accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. It bills only clean shots, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. | Do you need API-based captures, clean shots, explicit verdict and billing headers, or screenshot access for AI agents? |
| Playwright screenshot assertions | Local or repository baselines; retries until two consecutive screenshots match; controls for animation, scale, masking, stylesheets, and comparison thresholds. | Can you pin the environment, maintain baseline files, and control capture options in your test setup? |
| Chromatic | Cloud capture for story/component and end-to-end workflows, with snapshot metadata and visual diffs. Its documented readiness and animation handling have the limitations described above. | Does its capture environment and review workflow suit your tests, and have you checked state readiness and DPR behavior? |
| BrowserStack Percy | Managed browser infrastructure and cross-browser screenshots, with separate captures that can expose browser- and operating-system-specific differences. | Do you need managed browser and operating-system coverage, and can your team interpret platform-specific rendering differences? |
Or skip the browser setup
For a one-off website capture, ScreenshotNeo can return an image with one GET request. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details.
