If Samsung Gallery shows an SD-card photo but it will not open, first determine whether the problem is the image file, the card, or Gallery’s access to a file that is still readable. Open the card in My Files and try the photo there; then check whether other files on the card open. Those results tell you whether to troubleshoot Gallery or protect the card’s data before taking further action.
First, identify what is failing
Try these checks before changing settings or formatting anything:
- Open My Files, select the SD card, and try to open the affected image.
- Try opening other files on the card. If no files open, the card may not be reading reliably.
- Restart the phone, then try the image in another app, such as Google Photos. Samsung recommends checking other files and trying another app when Gallery shows an exclamation mark or gray thumbnail. Samsung’s Gallery troubleshooting guidance

If the photo is readable but Gallery does not show it
When you can find the image in My Files, the problem may be Gallery’s visibility or access rather than the card itself. Check the following:

- Hidden albums or files: Review Gallery’s hidden-album settings and check whether the folder contains a
.nomediafile, which can prevent media in that folder from appearing in Gallery. - Trash: Check both Gallery Trash and My Files Trash in case the image was deleted.
- Downloads: Look under Albums > Downloads if the image was downloaded rather than saved into a camera folder.
- Folder placement: If Gallery cannot access the current folder, copy the image to a supported Pictures folder and see whether it appears there. Copying preserves the original while you test.
- Permissions: In your phone’s app settings, allow Gallery access to photos and videos. Menu names can differ by Galaxy model and software version.
Gallery may also group similar images under one thumbnail. Open the group or use the ungroup option before concluding that a particular picture is missing. Grouping can explain why an image is not immediately visible, but it does not explain a photo that fails to open. Samsung’s guidance on Gallery photo groups

If the SD card or image will not open
Reseat and test the card
Power off the phone if required by your device’s instructions, remove the microSD card, and reinsert it carefully so it is seated correctly. Then check whether the phone recognizes it. If possible, test it in another phone, tablet, or computer. A computer may support file systems that Android does not, so a card that fails on a computer is not the only possible explanation; an unreadable card that continues to produce errors may be damaged. Protect accessible files before destructive steps
If any files are still accessible, copy them to a computer or another safe location before trying a fix that changes or erases the card. Samsung warns that formatting erases data on the SD card. It says formatting may help resolve some errors, but if the warning persists, it recommends backing up the card and replacing it. Do not format if the card contains the only copy of photos you need.

If important files remain inaccessible after non-destructive checks, a reputable data-recovery specialist may be an option, but recovery is uncertain. Samsung’s guidance does not promise that files can be restored.
Check compatibility before replacing the card
Supported card types and maximum capacities depend on the Galaxy model. Check the manual or support page for your exact phone or tablet rather than assuming that a capacity limit applies to every Galaxy device. Clear Gallery data only after simpler checks
Clearing Gallery’s data is a later troubleshooting step, not a harmless first fix. Samsung’s Russian support guidance says this resets Gallery settings, separates grouped folders, and deletes photos in Gallery Trash. If the files open normally and your goal is simply to move them, Samsung’s instructions vary by region and device. One documented Gallery workflow is to create an album on the SD card, select photos, and choose Move to album. Samsung also documents moving or copying files through My Files. The available labels and steps can vary by model and software version, so use instructions that match your device.
