Robots need more than powerful AI: they need mechanics and control systems that can sense and respond to contact with the real world. In an EE Times podcast, robotics pioneer Rodney Brooks argues that force feedback, compliant hardware and fast reactive behavior are essential for tasks that cannot be solved by replaying a fixed sequence of movements.
What “physical intelligence” means in robotics
Physical intelligence is the ability to act effectively through a body interacting with a variable environment. A robot must do more than calculate where an object is or plan a path. It must sense contact, accommodate variation and adjust its movement as forces change.
That distinction is central to Brooks’s argument in the EE Times Brains and Machines episode, published January 3, 2025. Brooks, an MIT emeritus professor and robotics entrepreneur, says computation alone cannot make a robot capable if its hardware and control system cannot handle the physical task.
Why a fixed movement plan can fail
Position control specifies where to move
A position-controlled robot follows commanded positions or trajectories. That can work well in a predictable setting, but it is brittle when an object’s location, shape or resistance varies. A single recorded movement does not tell the robot how to respond when contact happens earlier or later than expected.

Force feedback responds to what happens
Brooks uses oyster shucking to illustrate the difference. A person feels for a crack, applies a twist and adapts to the particular oyster. The task depends on sensing resistance and changing force—not simply repeating the same coordinates.
A series-elastic actuator offers one way to measure and control force. In the design Brooks discusses, a spring sits in series between the motor and the load. The spring deflects under load, providing a measure of force; the motor can then control torque to regulate that force. The actuator’s compliance helps the system respond to contact rather than treating every deviation as an error to overcome with stiffness.
Reactive behavior can be built in layers
Brooks contrasts his behavioral-robotics approach with early systems that tried to build a detailed three-dimensional model of the world, plan a motion and then execute it. On the limited computers of the time, that pipeline could be slow and fragile.

In behavioral robotics, simple sensor-to-actuator couplings operate in parallel. More complex behavior can emerge as layers modulate simpler ones. Instead of requiring a robot to construct a complete abstract account of every situation before acting, the design lets it respond directly to relevant signals from the environment.
This does not make planning or AI irrelevant. It highlights that high-level computation must connect to sensing and action that work at the pace of physical interaction. A plan cannot compensate for a gripper that cannot detect slipping or a controller that cannot respond to unexpected contact.
Where force-sensitive robots have been deployed
Brooks says Rethink Robotics placed about 5,000 upper-body humanoid robots, sold as Baxter and Sawyer, in factories. He also says force-sensitive robots helped make it possible to use industrial robots outside protective cages by detecting unexpected force. These are statements from Brooks in the interview, not independently audited deployment totals or a safety certification.

Why hands remain a difficult robotics problem
When asked to name an especially difficult problem, Brooks answers: “It’s easy: hands.” Many robot picking systems still rely on suction cups or parallel-jaw grippers—useful tools, but not equivalents of a human hand. Brooks says these basic forms have changed little since the 1960s.

Reproducing that combination is harder than demonstrating a hand-shaped device moving through a choreographed sequence. Brooks cautions that some videos of complicated robot-hand actions show a person supporting the mechanism just below the elbow.

The engineering choice is often practical rather than anatomical: a task-specific suction gripper or parallel-jaw tool may be simpler and more reliable than a humanlike hand. A convincing humanoid form is not, by itself, evidence that the robot can manipulate a broad range of objects autonomously.

Brooks argues that human movement is unusually capable because the body’s compliant structures store and reuse energy. Many robots instead rely on stiff structures and high-torque position control. He says practical materials and funding for humanlike running systems are not yet available at the necessary scale.
As a result, copying a person’s shape does not automatically reproduce the way a person moves. Mobility depends on how the body absorbs impact, stores energy and responds to disturbances—not just on commanding joints to follow a humanlike trajectory.

What Brooks says about robot learning
Brooks is skeptical of treating reinforcement learning or large collections of human demonstrations as a universal route to capable robots. He describes robots spending hundreds of hours “whacking around” to learn behavior that a comparatively simple control algorithm could already produce. That is his criticism of some approaches, not a claim about every learning system.
He also argues that position-only demonstrations leave out important information: the forces a person applies and the force feedback they sense while performing the task. A video or trajectory can record where a hand moved without capturing how it adjusted its grip when an object resisted or shifted. Learning from demonstrations may therefore need richer information about contact, force and the body’s mechanics.
Why a dramatic robot video is not proof of general intelligence
Brooks warns against judging a robot’s broad capabilities from a polished demonstration. In his discussion of Boston Dynamics, he says videos may take many attempts to produce, and that a backflip does not demonstrate general situational intelligence. A successful stunt shows that a system can perform that maneuver under some conditions; it does not establish that it can handle unfamiliar tasks reliably.
For a real deployment, the more relevant questions are whether the robot repeats the task consistently, handles variation and reacts safely when something unexpected happens. The EE Times episode offers Brooks’s perspective rather than independent performance testing, benchmarks or safety assessments.

The 48-minute, 36-second conversation features EE Times hosts Sunny Bains and Giulia D’Angelo speaking with Brooks, followed by commentary from Johns Hopkins professor Ralph Etienne-Cummings. Its value is as an explanation of Brooks’s approach to robotics, including his emphasis on contact, compliance and behavior grounded in sensing.
The episode does not provide comparative laboratory results, safety certifications or current hardware prices. Its examples and deployment figures should be understood as claims Brooks makes in the conversation, not as a new independent evaluation of robot products.
